Chapter 1091: Chapter 1088: Looking for Evidence
Madam Zhao understood the unsaid words in just a few moments. She steadied her nerves and looked earnestly at Ye Muyu, saying seriously, “Ah Yu, thank you.”
“You better go back quickly, lady; Qingqing needs you.”
Ye Muyu had never anticipated that Zhao Qingqing would really be framed by someone. If it weren’t for her belief that the Lin family was cruel and audaciously bold, she wouldn’t have specifically warned them, just in case.
Fortunately, she hadn’t entertained any false hopes.
Ye Muyu didn’t delay any further and stepped out of the yard, noticing that there weren’t many people around, but the Lin residence was in chaos.
“Chun Xing, Su Mei, let’s go back,” Ye Muyu commanded.
The two maidservants nodded quickly.
By the time they got back to the front courtyard, the lively banquet had only left behind spilled drinks, bowls, and dishes. The cold leftovers acted as a symbol of the Lin residence’s decline along with them.
“Milord,” Su Mei and Chun Xing said, quickly paying their respects.
Chu Heng remained at the mansion gate, not having departed. He strode towards Ye Muyu and looked down at her, “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine; I was prepared,” Ye Muyu glanced around and noticed that there were still guards at the Lin residence’s entrance, but the imperial envoy was not present. She then spoke softly about what had happened in the Lin residence that day, “I never expected the Lin family to be bold enough to try to kidnap me directly, but thankfully Lin Mianmian’s jealousy helped me notice something was amiss.”
“Later, they tried to use the drinks to send me to the back yard, but look, the fabric I’m wearing is quite good, not soaked through at all…”
Before Ye Muyu could finish her sentence, she was already engulfed in Chu Heng’s embrace. His warm hug and broad back gave her a strong sense of security.
Chu Heng: “Luckily, you are safe.”
He had secretly arranged for people to protect Ye Muyu. He had barely missed an opportunity, and Chu Heng regretted not being more careful. @@novelbin@@
Ye Muyu felt a slight tremor and a faint smile appeared on her lips. She reached out and gently patted his back, “It’s okay, I’ve been heeding your advice and taking precautions. I can’t rely only on you for protection; I want to protect you as well.”
Even the best of relationships need mutual maintenance. Although Ye Muyu coveted his kindness, she would not just enjoy it without understanding how to give back.
“By the way, something happened to Lin Mianmian; did you know?” Ye Muyu mentioned Lin Mianmian’s situation, “Is this really the Lin family’s doing, or…”
She felt there was something fishy about the situation but could not make a definitive conclusion. After all, if it was the Lin family, she could not extend her hand into their residence.
“I’ll tell you tonight; I still have to go to the prison to interrogate the Lin family members later.”
“Rest assured and wait at the residence,” Chu Heng said and planted a kiss on her forehead before letting go of her.
Ye Muyu smiled and nodded, making a sound of agreement, when she heard footsteps behind her. She saw some officers escorting out other males from the Lin family house, while the female family members were taken away separately to be detained.
“Then I won’t delay you any longer; I’ll head back now.” Ye Muyu knew full well that Chu Heng was likely involved in this matter. Without lingering, she lifted her skirt and left the Lin residence, getting into her carriage to return home under Chu Heng’s watchful gaze.
Chu Heng retracted his gaze, his tender eyes already replaced with steely coldness. After having the Lin family members taken away, he led a group of officers to search the Lin residence.
When they found the real account books in the magistrate of Yuzhou’s secret room, Chu Heng did not leave immediately.
“Keep searching, don’t overlook any corner; take out any paper you find,” Chu Heng ordered. The officers immediately started rummaging through the secret room.
He stood in the middle, silent.
What do you think?
