"Phantom Rebirth: The Last White Raven’s Path to the Ultimate Assassin"

Chapter 398: The Moonlit Marksmanship

The Raven’s Perch was quiet as usual, the rhythmic sounds of the waves crashing against the cliffs far below filling the air with a calm yet distant hum. Inside, the usual bustle of daily life carried on—crew members going about their tasks, maintenance being done, and the occasional chatter of visitors from the surrounding seas. But for Seraphis, the stillness felt more like a lull than peace. It was a brief moment of tranquility, but a brief moment was all she would allow before her next adventure.

She stood up from her desk in the office, letting the scrolls and parchment she had been reviewing slide into neat stacks. She’d completed her work, and the emptiness she’d felt earlier was creeping back again. She needed something to do.

Her fingers brushed across the edge of her desk as her thoughts began to take shape. Her mind wandered back to the game she had created, the challenge she’d designed for herself and others to enjoy. "I wonder how Lysara will react," Seraphis mused to herself. Her smirk returned, the thrill of her new creation making her excitement pulse in her veins.

She left her office and made her way down the corridor to the eating hall, her footsteps echoing through the otherwise silent hallways. The Raven’s Perch was an impressive stronghold, carved directly into the rock of the island, with every corner of the place designed to serve both function and form. The smell of freshly baked bread and stew wafted from the kitchens, a reminder of the comfort that the hall always provided.

Lysara, as expected, was seated at the long wooden table near the back, nibbling on a piece of bread and chatting with a few of the crew. She was a tall, elegant woman, her raven-black hair cascading in waves over her shoulders, and her piercing green eyes flicked up when Seraphis entered. The familiar, easy camaraderie between them made Seraphis feel momentarily at ease—before the excitement of her new game quickly overtook any sense of calm.

"Hello, Lysara," Seraphis greeted her, her voice light with mischief.

Lysara raised an eyebrow, sensing the change in Seraphis’s demeanor. "What’s going on? You look like you’ve got something up your sleeve."

Seraphis flashed her a grin. "Actually, I do. I’ve got a surprise for you. Follow me."

Lysara looked intrigued but didn’t question her. She finished off the last of her bread, then stood up to follow Seraphis, her curiosity piqued. "A surprise? What’s this about?"

Seraphis didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she led the way through the stronghold, her long white hair flowing behind her as she moved with purpose. They passed through the great hall, the sounds of the crew fading away as they approached a quieter section of the keep. Reaching a secluded area near the back, Seraphis paused and turned to face her.

"I’ve been bored," Seraphis confessed with a wry smile. "And when I get bored, I create. So, I’ve made something that I think will be... exciting."

Lysara gave her an appraising look. "You made something? What exactly?"

"Follow me," Seraphis said, her tone now filled with anticipation. She snapped her fingers once. The air shimmered and distorted as a glowing portal began to form in front of them. It pulsed with magical energy, swirling in a spectrum of colors. Seraphis gestured toward the portal. "Through here."

Without hesitation, Lysara stepped forward, stepping through the portal with Seraphis right behind her. The world around them bent and shifted as they crossed through the magical doorway, and when they emerged on the other side, they found themselves standing in the heart of a vast forest.

The trees towered above them, their leaves rustling in the soft breeze, and the moonlight shone brightly through the canopy. It bathed the entire forest in a soft, ethereal glow, giving the place an almost otherworldly feeling. The air smelled fresh and crisp, filled with the earthy scent of the woods.

Lysara looked around in awe, taking in the beauty of the place. "Where are we? This doesn’t look like any place I’ve seen before."

Seraphis grinned, clearly pleased with her creation. "I created this place. This is the setting for a game I’ve made. It’s called Moonlit Marksmanship."

Lysara’s eyes widened, curiosity now fully piqued. "Moonlit Marksmanship? A game? What’s it about?"

Seraphis’s grin grew wider as she turned to fully face Lysara. She raised her hands, and with a snap of her fingers, the landscape shifted slightly. The moon above them glowed even brighter, its light casting more defined shadows across the ground, and the forest seemed to settle into a more mystical ambiance.

"This," Seraphis began, her voice filled with excitement, "is a game of strategy, skill, and magic. It’s a contest that I’ve designed for anyone looking for a real challenge, something beyond the usual." She paused for a moment, making sure Lysara was listening closely. "The objective is simple: capture all five towers."

Lysara tilted her head. "Five towers? What are the towers for?"

"Each tower is a key point of the game," Seraphis explained. She began pacing slowly as she spoke, her hands gesturing as if painting the picture for Lysara. "The players need to conquer these towers, and the way to do that is either by defeating the leader of the tower or by placing your flag on top. The towers are marked with colors—White, Black, Red, Brown, and Green."

"Are they all the same?" Lysara asked, clearly intrigued.

"No," Seraphis replied. "Each tower represents something different, a different strategy, a different challenge. For example, the White Tower is a safe zone—a place to rest and recuperate. The others, though, are more... tactical."

Lysara’s eyes gleamed with interest, her mind racing as she processed the information. "So, you have to take down the leaders, or..."

"Yes, or you need to plant your flag," Seraphis affirmed, nodding. "There are no rules about how you get there. Anything goes, and the game is won by the first team—or individual—that captures all five towers."

Lysara crossed her arms thoughtfully. "And the towers themselves—do they have defenses?"

Seraphis’s grin widened as she continued, "Of course. The game wouldn’t be fun without some defenses. Each tower has its own set of challenges, whether it’s magical traps, guards, or other players trying to stop you."

"Sounds intense," Lysara remarked. "How do you keep track of who’s winning?"

"Good question," Seraphis said, snapping her fingers once again. A magical parchment appeared before them, floating in the air. "I’ve written down the rules, and there are three levels of play."

She handed the parchment to Lysara, who took it and read it aloud:

Moonlit Marksmanship Rules:

  1. To win, capture all five towers—either defeat the leader of the tower or place your flag on the tower.

  2. The head and neck are considered fatal zones. If you’re hit in these areas, you’re out of the game and must return to the safe zone.

  3. The game is about strategy, magic, and archery. Anything goes.

  4. Players can use magic, archery, and even weapons to take down other players and capture towers.

Lysara looked up from the parchment. "This is brilliant," she said. "It’s like a combination of strategy, combat, and a bit of magic."

Seraphis nodded, pleased with the reaction. "Exactly. But there’s more. There are three levels of difficulty."

She snapped her fingers again, and a holographic display appeared, showing the three levels.

Level 1: No pain, no real danger. The weapons aren’t lethal, and players can enjoy the challenge without worrying about injury.

Level 2: Real pain, but not fatal. Players can still feel the sting of their wounds, but they’re not at risk of dying.

Level 3: The most dangerous level. Players can lose limbs, feel like they’ve died, and experience real pain. However, they will be teleported back to the safe zone upon death.

Lysara nodded, her mind buzzing with possibilities. "And what do you win?"

Seraphis smirked. "Prizes, of course. But the best prizes come from the most intense battles—team matches, one-on-ones, and free-for-alls. The more you win, the better your reward."

Lysara laughed. "You certainly know how to keep things interesting."

Seraphis’s eyes gleamed with excitement. "I thought you’d like it."

"I do," Lysara admitted. "It’s a brilliant idea. I think this will bring a lot of fun and excitement to everyone who plays."

Seraphis nodded. "That’s the idea. Moonlit Marksmanship—where only the best rise to the top."
