Chapter 476: The Fall of Life Magic
"So, Kent, where are you from?" Kent was seated around a table, eating rice balls with a rather delicious soup. Just a single bite was enough to send him back to Earth.
It wasn't like he needed food as a cultivator, considering spiritual qi alone could make him go years without eating.
However, he chose to indulge in the fine delicacy prepared by the family of three, who were trying to thank him for saving them and their daughter.
Of course, he knew small conversations would be made, so when Elaine's mother, Rain, asked the question, Kent just smiled and decided to enjoy the small talk.
"I am not from around here. I can even say I am from a very far place, but since I always make wherever I am home, then I can say this is my home now."
Telling them he was from Earth wouldn't be something they could easily handle at the moment. Of course, he wasn't afraid they would do anything to him.
It's just that he didn't want to give them a headache, so he would rather plan the story how he wanted it to be.
Maybe one day, they will find out his true origin.
"I see," Lady Rain said, smiling at Kent, who wasn't shying away from eating his food.
"This is very delicious, Lady Rain. I will come for more whenever I am around," Kent said, taking a bite out of his fish.
"Thank you, Kent," the cheerful mother, who had already accepted that Kent was rather friendly and that they shouldn't be nervous around him, said with a smile.
Mothers are always the best.
They knew when to ease into the moment. Thankfully, she knew how to keep Kent engaged while they dined.
"I can't help but wonder, Lady Rain, why is Life Magic rare in this area? Where I am from, Life Magic is rather common," Kent said.
Of course, the Life Magic he was talking about referred to the thousands of brilliant doctors who used heaven-defying techniques to perform surgeries every single day.
If you want to lie, tell the truth like you mean it. He nearly told the true from his own perspective.
His question, however, showed genuine concern.
He didn't know that his question brought back sad memories that the three would rather not discuss.
They hesitated, but Elaine's father, Cedric, knew telling Kent wouldn't be too much of an ask.
After all, he saved them and their daughter.
Cedric placed his cup down gently, exchanging a brief glance with his wife before speaking. It wasn't a pleasant memory to relive.
"I'm sure you already know about the Ancient Battlefield of Parting, so I'll spare you the backstory.
However, you might not know what truly happened — the event that forever changed the fate of Life Magicians in this world."
The family of three let out a heavy sigh, and even Lady Rain held Elaine's hand tightly.
"Before the Parting, the Wynthrall family — the family I come from — was known as the beacon of Life Magic in this world.
The Wynthrall was a family of Life magicians. We were widely known and revered all over the world.
Back then, Core Formation wasn't the limit of cultivation.
There were thousands of powerful beings roaming the vast, boundless world. The Wynthrall family stood among them, respected even by the elves, who were famed for their mastery of Life Magic.
It's no exaggeration to say we were the light of life itself. Our Wynthrall family had tens of thousands of disciples scattered across the world, offering their healing arts and miracles to all.
Then came the Parting — a great battle that tore apart the world and shrank it into what it is today. Our Wynthrall family suffered the most because of the role we played.
We were the backbone on which every warrior depended. Thousands would have died had it not been for the Wynthrall family's assistance when needed.
For the better part of the battles, we provided the services that were required of us.
However, when the battle reached its peak and humans were on the verge of victory, a disaster descended that would forever cripple humanity's future.
A Tier 15 spell that nobody knew where it came from or who it came from was cast.
It was a powerful forbidden technique that cursed every Life Magician's bloodline.
I don't know all the details of the spell, considering this happened thousands of years before I was born.
But from what was passed down, it was clear that from the generations that came before us, the curse shackled their potential, and we inherited it.
It forever locked out bloodline, shackled our innate talents and abilities, and closed the chapter of life magic in the human continent.
It limited all Life Magicians to Tier 5, meaning no one could ever advance beyond the fifth Tier in Life Magic again.
The curse didn't only affect us humans, but even the Elves were affected.
Of course, there are rumors that the elves managed to find a way to reverse the curse. However, this remorse cannot be validated considering, up to date, nobody could tell who cast the spell and why they did that.
So even if the Elves did manage to reverse the curse, they wouldn't tell anyone.
But we humans, my family especially, could not and would never be able to harness the power of life magic ever again.
Thus, we were reduced to a shadow of our former glory, forever bound to Tier 5.
Now, the strongest Life Magicians in the human continent are... well, us. And after hiding our identity for thousands of years, no one remembers who we once were.
We've quietly lived on, a small family still passionate about Life Magic, clinging to the last embers of a forgotten era.
It's sad, but this happened thousands of years ago, and thus we can only accept the hand we were dealt."
Cedric laughed, but his laughter wasn't that encouraging.
Kent, who knew this memory wasn't pleasant, sighed deeply and washed his hands. He wasn't satisfied, but he had to stop eating for now.
"Looks like I must pay a visit to the Elven empire soon," he said as he stood up.
"Though this happened thousands of years ago, I can promise you that life magic will appear in this world again, and this time, your potential will even overshadow that of your ancestors."
Kent picked a sliced orange and looked at Elaine. "Can you walk me out? I have something to discuss with you."
Elaine nodded and stood up. Kent looked at Lady Rain and Cedric and smiled. "The food was the best I've had in years. If possible, invite me whenever you prepare it again."
The lady, who was in shock from what Kent said, nodded. Cedric was the same. He also held a shocked expression as he watched Kent walk out of the dining room.
On the outside, Kent took Elaine's hand and flew them to a floating platform several meters off the ground.
It was nighttime, so the stars and the thirteen moons were up in the sky, illuminating the glamorous city below.
Kent and Elaine sat on the platform and admired the night sky for a few minutes before speaking.
"Do you want to start making pills again?"
What do you think?
