Chapter 666: This Creature
"The Covenant of Eternity has entered a pact of alliance with Elvardia. In exchange for all corpses resulting from this war as well as the relocation of Master Artificer dwarves into the syndicate's ranks, we'll assist in their war efforts. We're already doing it by backing the lionkin with all the advantages they need to dominate the beastkin races and thus force them to focus their resources on fighting back instead of attacking Elvardia, but when the time for invasion arrives, we'll cause major problems for the Ravenshade duke from the inside…"
"It's a perfect union of needs," Vex noted. "Your undead masters couldn't care less about land, their main goal in their unlife is to ascend into higher realms of existence. Dwarven artificers and human Alchemists are the best combination to help them. Ruling over human subjects has never been their interest, allowing Elvardia to conquer to their heart's content, gaining rich lands for themselves."
It was none other than the sheepkin queen who added, "The long-lived elves have a tendency to be efficient keepers of ancient knowledge and must have a few tips that could assist the undead and their following in succeeding their unholy rituals. In exchange, Elvardia gets to have the help of these deformed monstrosities with their giant undead armies and other dark magicians, and the best of it is that all they need to do in exchange is satisfy a few requests here and there. Truly, a win-win situation…"
I had to inwardly shake my head. The fact these human lords allowed parasites like the Consortium and Covenant to get so big was finally biting them in the ass. Up until these last few months, the syndicates were on their best behavior which suited the nobles just fine. Although I wasn't privy to this information, it wouldn't surprise me to learn they got paid handsomely in exchange for turning a blind eye.
But now… it was as if my transmigration had set things into motion, breaking truces that were stable for millennia.
"I say we've gathered more than enough evidence. Presenting these findings will make our claim legitimate, while the lionkin will undoubtedly be seen as unlawful," Vargis announced.
"It's time for war!" Rajah snarled while slamming his fists against his desk. A sensible thrill traveled through the room, awakening the predatory nature of these ancient warriors.
"No more sneaking, no more deceit!" Skarn added while licking his lips. Maintaining the facade of being lawful was visibly taxing on him, it went against his nature. I bet if he wasn't responsible for the wolfkin people, he would've gone rogue just like Vex did in her free time and began hunting lionkin as a hobby.
"Before you people rush out of the room, I say we discuss the rewards our human friends here deserve," Gorruk spoke up. "Without them, we wouldn't be able to enter open war and remain lawful while doing so. Our resistance forces would've died for nothing if not for them bringing this necromancer to us."
Finally. It was my time to shine. "Thank you, Lord Gorruk," I said before looking each leader in the eye, gathering their attention. "I'm assuming you already had an inkling we were not here out of mere goodwill. Our objective is simple. We're on the cusp of going to war against the Greenvale duke and his allies, and we wish to gain your assistance in our efforts."
I saw a few uncertain looks and understood their thoughts. "Before you draw any conclusions, allow me to convey that we're not asking for a full-on invasion from you. I know you will enter rebuild mode after the lionkin have been ousted, you'll not have the resources to go to full-scale war for a bit. Instead, We're asking you to send just enough forces to make the Greenvales fight two fronts at once. If you could keep him busy for a single day on the borders, we would already be looking at a much better outlook than if we had to fight him by ourselves. Furthermore…"
I glanced toward Vex and nodded. At my gesture, she presented a communication artifact from her ring and called Maelstrom, the department head leading the armies of the Consortium, he's one of the circle members, making him Black Fang's equal.
"Allow me to introduce Lord Maelstrom. He's responsible for the forces of the Vesper Consortium," I said.
"Greetings, lords of the beastkin people," his deep voice boomed from the artifact. "As Devil had introduced me, my name is Maelstrom, head of the army department of the Vesper Consortium. We understand that our request of you could be seen as imbalanced in our favor. We might've secured you the ammunition required to declare war, but we're asking you to send tens of thousands of your members to their potential deaths in exchange. As such, we feel it's only right for us to increase our offer.
In exchange for signing a pact with us, stating you'll uphold your end of the deal as well as the Beastman Confederation's official recognition of the Vesper Consortium as a legitimate organization with whom you'll enter a non-aggression pact for the duration of 3 years…
I'll personally head an army of 20,000 Lunar Adepts to assist in your undertaking who are combatants between levels 15 and 25. 8,000 Eclipse Enforcers, between levels 26 and 39. 2,000 Shadow Vanguards, between levels 40 and 54. A 100 Veil Walkers, between levels 55 and 64. And lastly, I, Maelstrom, at level 71. We've had many scuffles with the Covenant, I've personally been fighting against their forces for over 900 years, of which I was the general for the last 300. There are not many people who know them and their tactics better than I do, and our members have been trained in ways to fight against their dark magic.
We'll move out within 24 hours, ready to invade the lionkin lands and oust the unjust Leohtar Sunfang as well as exterminate any presence of the filthy Covenant bastards from the lawful lands owned by you, lords of the Beastman Confederation."
Silence reigned over the room for a moment, they had a hard time believing the Consortium was ready to move so many of their forces to secure this deal. It was an incredibly heavy investment from us, but one the syndicate deemed worthy. We were not only asking for their assistance, after all, but a nation's official recognition of us, transforming the Consortium from outlaws to legitimate people in the eyes of a whole country. Legitimacy was paramount in politics, and the Consortium was on a path that led them into politics.
Maelstrom wasn't done just yet, however. "To make the pact clear of future debacles, it'll be clarified that should the Consortium fail to enter lionkin territories within the promised time or enter but not take part in the fighting, you're free to withdraw from the arrangement without repercussions."
"You drive a hard bargain, human warrior," Gorruk replied after a few seconds. He looked around, silently asking the opinion of his fellow beastkin allies. They each nodded their heads. They've been warring against the Greenvales for time immemorial, our ask to have them invade their lands was right up their alley. Their reluctance stemmed from being worried about being used by us. Humans had a strong stigma of being sneaky and good, opportunistic liars. These honorable fighters didn't like us much.
However, if the Consortium committed over 30,000 of their warriors to their cause, it was a deal that benefited them more than well, showing the sincerity of the syndicate.
But then, it was none other than Rajah and Skarn who spoke up in unison. They were on the same wavelength, and what they would say shocked every single member present.
"We're only willing to entertain this pact if Grim Reaper of the Skies—or Devil as you call this creature—signs a separate non-aggression pact with us, the Beastman Confederation, lasting a millennia."
"… What?"
What do you think?
