Chapter 649 - 297: A Girl's Heart is Sensitive

Middle-aged dinner parties are boring. A group of strangers gather to eat a meal as a way to get to know each other.

Luckily, today's gathering has two female protagonists, so the drinking is somewhat more civilized and not excessive, though they don't abstain entirely.

As a university president, Li Ru looks the part with an academic air, but she must have some tricks up her sleeve to sit at the top of the school's hierarchy. Asserting that she must have a drink with Liu Jing, she exchanges pleasantries and jokingly remarks that Director Liu inspecting our school is an indicator of our poor reception.

Liu Jing waves it off, saying it's nothing of the sort and that she's the one imposing.

The two then share a drink of baijiu. Liu Jing has a decent tolerance and manages to give Li Ru face. After a modest sip, she has her daughter Jiang Xinyi stand and introduces her to Li Ru.

As usual, she asks where she works and such.

Liu Jing says that she's a graduate student at Nan University.

"Oh my, that's quite impressive!" Li Ru feigns surprise.

Perhaps to Li Ru, being a graduate student is no big deal, but in social settings, one must express amazement when expected.

Liu Jing modestly replies that it's nothing special.

"Xinyi, Yuwen, come and offer Auntie Li a toast," Liu Jing beckons, treating Zhou Yuwen as one of the family.

Zhou Yuwen is sensible and stands up with Jiang Xinyi.

Li Ru quickly says there's no need for them to stand.

"No need, you can drink seated."

Even though Li Ru says this, when Zhou Yuwen and Jiang Xinyi stand, the phrase on everyone's mind is "a perfect match," and with Liu Jing's intent as clear as Sima Zhao's, it's known to all. Naturally, Li Ru plays along with Liu Jing, praising how well Zhou Yuwen and Jiang Xinyi suit each other.

Jiang Xinyi feels a bit embarrassed by the praises.

With Li Ru leading the conversation, everyone else chimes in with comments like they've felt since the piano performance that the pair is a match made in heaven, and they are exceptionally well-suited.

"Director Liu, this must be your son-in-law, right?"

"I envy you for finding such a good son-in-law!"

With a few words, Liu Jing is flattered and she doesn't even hint at denying it.

Despite Jiang Xinyi's embarrassment, she is truly happy today, not only for receiving applause for her performance but also because she feels an indescribable joy upon learning of Zhou Yuwen's breakup.

In high spirits, she takes a big gulp of baijiu.

"Cough, cough!"

And then she's overcome with coughing.

At this moment, Zhou Yuwen acts with grace.

He quickly pulls out a couple of tissues for Jiang Xinyi and supports her back gently, softly asking, "Are you okay?"

Jiang Xinyi shakes her head, the sensation of Zhou Yuwen's hand on her back quite delicate.

Zhou Yuwen whispers to her that if she can't drink much, she should drink less.

"Here, have some water."

As he speaks, Zhou Yuwen pours her a cup of hot water and brings it up close to her.

For Jiang Xinyi, it's the first time she feels cared for in this way, having never experienced it before, and looking at Zhou Yuwen, she sees all his actions are so natural.

It's not only Jiang Xinyi who notices; everyone observes Zhou Yuwen's behavior.

Zhou Yuwen doesn't seem like a boy six years younger than Jiang Xinyi; rather, he is more like an older brother.

The two sit down, and Zhou Yuwen serves Jiang Xinyi some warm dishes to help her recover.

"Mm..." Jiang Xinyi nods obediently.

Liu Jing watches their little interactions with growing satisfaction and apologetically smiles at Li Ru, saying, "I'm sorry, President Li, Xinyi has never been very good with alcohol since she was young."

"It's fine, she's just a child, and if she can't drink, she shouldn't drink. This isn't a formal occasion anyway."

The two exchange words back and forth until the dinner party concludes around ten o'clock.

When leaving, Jiang Xinyi is wearing Zhou Yuwen's coat.

The school leaders have a car waiting to take them. They can leave first.

Liu Jing also has a ride arranged.

After taking off his suit coat, Zhou Yuwen, clad in only a dress shirt, stands out with his physique.

Jiang Xinyi seems a bit drunk, in a mild state, and needs Zhou Yuwen's support when leaving. Liu Jing, however, is fairing better.

After saying goodbye to Li Ru and the others, a Maybach is already parked close by.

Liu Jing suggests to Zhou Yuwen, "Yuwen, it's getting late; why not stay over at our place instead of going back to the dorm?"

Zhou Yuwen smiles and declines, "It's not necessary, Auntie Jing."

"I have bought a house outside. I'll just go home."

"Oh, you mean..."

"I've recently bought a villa; I have another place," Zhou Yuwen says.

Liu Jing looks at the smile on Zhou Yuwen's face and realizes with an 'oh' that he might be more excellent than she thought.

She fears her daughter might not be able to hold on to him.

Zhou Yuwen helps Jiang Xinyi into the back of the car and tells Liu Jing, "Auntie Jing, Sister Xinyi seems to have drunk quite a bit. You should take her home first."

Seeing Zhou Yuwen's knowledge of proper etiquette, Liu Jing smiles faintly and replies, "Alright then, we'll keep in touch."

"Sure, we'll keep in touch."

As Liu Jing gets into the car and the driver Xiao Li starts the Maybach, Zhou Yuwen grows smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.

Jiang Xinyi appears to be truly drunk, having had one full glass and two smaller ones, not because others toasted her, but just to prove she could handle her liquor. Yet, unexpectedly, she drank herself into a stupor.

Drunk, not from the wine itself, but from her own indulgence, she naturally leans her flushed cheeks against Liu Jing's shoulder as they sit in the back of the car, clearly intoxicated.
