Chapter 21 - 21 21 Laugh at the Worlds Ridiculous People
Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Laugh at the World’s Ridiculous People Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Laugh at the World’s Ridiculous People “Good girl, you’re really capable.” Lu Aiguo actually noticed she was a bit out of breath, but since she wouldn’t admit it, he wasn’t going to expose her.
Lu Aiguo lifted Lu Yun up in one go and propped her onto his shoulders, “Honey, make sure you hold on tight.”
Lu Yun panicked for a moment, having not enjoyed such a treat in either of her two lifetimes. But soon, she calmed down, hugging her dad’s head and feeling an unprecedented sense of happiness enveloping her heart. Sitting on dad’s shoulders, she really could see so much higher and further…
“Such a big kid, and you’re still spoiling her,” Xia Yuan couldn’t help feeling a tinge of jealousy.
“A girl needs to be pampered,” Lu Aiguo leaned in to whisper in Xia Yuan’s ear, “When she grows up, she’ll know to find a man who’ll pamper her too. When we get home and close the door tonight, I’ll pamper you just like this.”
“You…” Xia Yuan blushed, reaching out to push him. But considering Lu Yun was on his shoulders, she could only huff in annoyance and walked ahead briskly, muttering under her breath in a tiny voice, “How can this man be so shameless?”
“Hahaha.”
Lu Aiguo felt increasingly addicted to teasing his wife, watching her blush and puff up in anger made him feel warm and fuzzy inside and out.
Sitting on Lu Aiguo’s shoulders, Lu Yun rolled her eyes at the sky without a word. In this life, it seemed her father had become more and more of a stranger.
But she liked this change in her dad.
And her mom, she also liked watching her being teased by dad, trying to curse but blushing instead. Didn’t she know how beautiful she looked when she was like that? No wonder dad never grew tired of teasing her.
Lu Yun tilted her head back, closed her eyes, and slowly smiled. So, this was what happiness felt like. If only these days could go on forever, she would be willing to give her all for it…
May the years be peaceful, and this life be stable.
Before they reached Auntie Tian’s house, the three of them passed by Wu Tan’s courtyard. Lu Aiguo stood outside and called out to Wu Tan with a loud voice.
“Ah, hello sister-in-law. Aiguo, what’s up? You called me out for something?” Wu Tan immediately came running out at the sound.
“Is your dad in?” Lu Aiguo poked his head to look. The courtyard was very quiet.
“No, I don’t know where he ran off to after eating.”
“Good that he’s not.” Lu Aiguo pulled Wu Tan into the yard, signaling Xia Yuan to stay outside and wait a moment.
“This is for you and your mother. Eat it quickly before it goes bad.” Lu Aiguo stuffed a bag of meat buns into his hands and turned to leave.
“What’s this?” Wu Tan asked, puzzled.
“Meat buns.”
“What?” Wu Tan’s voice suddenly dropped, and he whispered, “Where did you get these from?”
“Just eat it if I give it to you. Why so many questions? I’m off, got things to do,” Lu Aiguo said impatiently, waving his hand. Lu Yun sat on his shoulder and giggled.
“Alright then, I’ll come find you some other time when I’m free.”
Wu Tan didn’t waste any more words, and quickly hid the buns, closed the door, and ran towards the vegetable garden behind his house. He needed to find his mom first and get the meat into their stomachs. Otherwise, once his dad came back and saw it, those meat buns wouldn’t concern him and his mother anymore.
“Auntie Tian, Auntie Tian, are you at home?”
Standing outside the Tian family’s courtyard, this time it was Xia Yuan calling out.
“I’m coming, I’m coming. Who is it? Why have you all come?” Auntie Tian, clad in an apron, rushed out from the kitchen, and upon seeing Lu Aiguo with Xia Yuan and Lu Yun, she was taken aback.
“We’re just on our way back to tidy some things up, so we dropped by. Auntie, you don’t want us visiting, do you? If that’s the case, we’ll be off now,” Xia Yuan said playfully, teasing.
Seeing Xia Yuan in her brand new outfit, indeed—a white shirt paired with smart black trousers—not only did she look much more spirited, but coupled with a demeanor different from her usual self, the overall radiance she exuded was simply incomparable to before.
After a moment’s astonishment, Auntie Tian suddenly laughed, “You’ve come all this way to the doorstep and now you think of leaving? Dream on, come in now.”
Xia Yuan grinned and stepped into the courtyard, followed by Lu Aiguo, who was all smiles, leading Lu Yun.
“How come Uncle and big brother and sister-in-law haven’t returned from the field yet?” Xia Yuan casually inquired.
“Exactly, they went out a bit late today. I thought of coming back to cook, but they won’t be back for a while. Xia Yuan, Aiguo, let me boil some eggs for you,” Auntie Tian said, wiping her hands on her apron.
“Don’t trouble yourself, we’re just standing for a bit before we leave, we still have things to do and are worried about the time. Even if you boiled the eggs, we couldn’t eat them now,” Xia Yuan quickly declined, shaking her head.
Lu Aiguo had already put down Lu Yun and was taking out gifts from his backpack to give to Auntie Tian.
“Auntie, you’ve taken care of me for so many years. Please don’t refuse these gifts today, or I won’t dare to come visit you again,” Xia Yuan said, preemptively cutting off any refusal Auntie Tian might have offered, “These two packages are ready-to-eat food, just right for everyone’s breakfast.”
“Ah… you child, why be so formal with your auntie?” Auntie Tian rubbed her hands awkwardly, and seeing as Xia Yuan had put it that way, she couldn’t very well refuse, and so she graciously nodded and accepted, “Fine, then I’ll shamelessly accept.”
“If you have things to do, you should go ahead. When you’re free, we’ll have a chat. You wouldn’t believe the show the night before last; couples, mothers and daughters, mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law—all in a tangle, fighting the whole night. It drew a crowd, and you couldn’t imagine how entertained everyone was,” Auntie Tian said, pulling Xia Yuan aside and whispering, unable to hide her schadenfreude, “Thankfully, you got out of that den of wolves. By the way, is Xiaoyun alright?”
“We had her stay in the hospital overnight for observation. She’s fine now, thanks to your green bean soup,” Xia Yuan replied gratefully.
“It was nothing, anyone would have helped. She’s fine, and that’s what matters,” Auntie Tian shook her head, “You better get going, and when you’re free, come see me more often, come and play.”
“Yeah, I will,” Xia Yuan said, waving her hand.
“Auntie, we’re leaving now,” Lu Aiguo also said his farewells. Lu Yun waved as well.
Xia Yuan led Lu Aiguo and Lu Yun straight to the old residence. Upon opening the door and entering, they packed up the last few belongings into Lu Aiguo’s backpack, and the three of them quickly departed. This time, Lu Yun refused to let Lu Aiguo carry her on his shoulders, concerned that he was burdened by the heavy load.
Next door, someone from the Su Family peered out briefly but quickly retreated. Xia Yuan guessed it was because Chen Juxiang wasn’t around or perhaps seeing Lu Aiguo that no one came out to cause trouble.
But even if someone had come out, she was no longer afraid. With a man to support her and an understanding daughter, what more could her family’s antics do? Nobody would pay them any mind.
Realizing all this, Xia Yuan’s mood brightened considerably. Thinking about the family fight Auntie Tian had mentioned, she let out a chuckle. It was a shame she missed the drama. Dog-eat-dog might still bring some fun to the villagers; maybe that’s the greatest value the Su Family had left.
“Mom, why are you laughing?” Lu Yun looked at her mother’s hearty laughter and joined in.
“Always keep smiling at the world’s ridiculousness,” Xia Yuan said, patting Lu Yun’s head with a sigh, “Xiaoyun, I really love it when you’re like this.”
What do you think?
