Rebirth in Journey to the West: Sun Wukong

Chapter 314: 314 You Can Try (2nd Update)

Chapter 314: Chapter 314 You Can Try (2nd Update)

“Are you in need of people?”

Wukong followed the three people to the Boundary Bridge and walked directly onto it, asking the trio.

“Is this brother a lone mercenary?”

The skinny man’s eyes lit up instantly; he grabbed Wukong’s arm enthusiastically and began introducing, “Looking at your cultivation, you have reached the rank of Demon Marshal, your skills must be impressive. Choosing our Rose Mercenary Group is the right choice. We are quite a capable group, and this time we are heading to the Myriad Beast Mountains. You know about the Myriad Beast Mountains, right? It’s the mountain range where the Demon Crystals are produced the most. Follow us, and I guarantee you’ll make a fortune…”

“Monkey, enough! Stop spouting nonsense!”

The woman in the leather jacket frowned and scolded the skinny man, who then gave a dry laugh and shut his mouth.

“Hello, my name is Huang Zhen, and I am the leader of the Rose Mercenary Group. My Demon Primordial Force attribute is supportive, this is Chai Pengyu, you can call him Old Chai, his Demon Primordial Force attribute is control, and he is Hou Jie, his Demon Primordial Force attribute is long-range Attack. We are currently in need of someone with a close-range or defensive Demon Primordial Force attribute. What’s your Demon Primordial Force attribute?”

The woman in the leather jacket stepped forward a couple of steps, came up to Wukong, looked him up and down, and then asked.@@novelbin@@

“Demon Primordial Force attribute?”

Wukong slightly furrowed his brow; there were such classifications as supportive, control, long-range, and close-range in Demon Primordial Force? The Demonic Realm really was vastly different from the Three Realms!

“I am not limited by any attribute.”

Wukong shook his head.

“No attribute limitations, what does that mean?”

Huang Zhen and her companions were puzzled; Wukong’s words sounded very strange.

“It means there’s no such thing as exclusively long-range or close-range for me. I can fight and defend, can attack from afar and close-up. How about it, do you need me?”

Wukong said indifferently, but Huang Zhen and her companions looked at him with odd expressions. This man was boasting too much, claiming he could fight, defend, and operate at any range—was he suggesting he had no weaknesses and was completely well-rounded?

How could that be possible?

Unlike the Immortal Force in the Three Realms, the Demon Primordial Force of the Demonic Realm not only encapsulated dark and bloodthirsty attributes but also had unique properties in that each type of Demon Primordial Force had a different developmental path. Similarly, members of the Demon Race would also choose cultivation techniques and secret techniques that matched their Demon Primordial Force attributes and were categorized into five types: long-range, close-range, supportive, control, and defensive in combat.

A typical mercenary squad usually consisted of five individuals, each specializing in one category, cooperating with one another to significantly enhance their combat effectiveness, overcoming demonic beasts with superior cultivation strength. Being well-rounded in the Demonic Realm meant being mediocre in everything. So, when Wukong spoke, besides thinking he was boasting, Huang Zhen and her companions also doubted his capability.

“Haha! There really is no limit to shamelessness, and someone even dares to claim he can operate at any range and in any role! This is truly an eye-opener for me, Duanmu Bai!”

Before Huang Zhen and the others could speak, a sharp mocking laughter rang out from nearby as a young, beardless man dressed in a flamboyant white robe walked over. His gaze toward Wukong was full of scorn, then he shifted his attention to Huang Zhen, scanning her shapely body with a fleeting covetous gaze, shook the folding fan in his hand, and greeted Huang Zhen. As for Chai Pengyu and Hou Jie, he did not even glance at them.

“I am Duanmu Bai, with a cultivation of a Demon Spirit. I was just thinking of traveling to the Demon Beast Continent. Miss, isn’t your mercenary group short on members? Perfect, I can join and lend a hand!”

Duanmu Bai said proudly, paused for a moment, then sneakily glanced at Wukong with a mocking smile, “As for some who can’t even weigh their own worth, I think it’s best if you don’t bother with him, miss!”

Wukong’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he glared coldly at Duanmu Bai. With his temperament, had this been in the Three Realms, he would have already pulled out the Ruyi Golden-Hooped Rod and smashed Duanmu Bai into a pulp!

A mere Taiyi Golden Immortal, daring to mock and scorn him, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, so arrogantly—truly living too impatiently!

“Stay calm, stay calm, let’s cross the bridge first and head to the Myriad Beast Mountains, finding Brother Mu and the others is what’s most important. It’s not worth stooping to the level of this blind fool!”

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and comforted himself a couple of times. Wukong stifled the anger in his heart and looked up at Huang Zhen: “I, Old Sun, never boast. Whatever type you need, that is what I can be; you can verify whenever you wish.”

“Kid, think before you speak! Even I wouldn’t dare claim such things, yet you, a mere Demon Marshal, dare to speak out? Aren’t you afraid the wind might blow your tongue away?”

Duanmu Bai seemed to find Wukong displeasing no matter how he looked at him, not waiting for Huang Zhen to respond, he intercepted once more, his gaze fiercely fixed on Wukong, threatening, “If you know what’s good for you, get lost quickly, and stop bothering this lady, or I’ll show you the strength of the Duanmu Family!”

“The Duanmu Family, could it be the Duanmu Family that ‘flows east as water, west as Duanmu’?”

Hou Jie suddenly exclaimed, his eyes wide with shock as he looked at Duanmu Bai.

“Indeed!”

Duanmu Bai’s face lit up with a smug look as he glared fiercely at Sun Wukong again, “What, you don’t understand what I’m saying? Do I have to personally throw you out myself?”

“You can try!”

A corner of Sun Wukong’s mouth lifted in a smirk as he started to smile lightly. Chaos Primordial Force was gathering in his palm. If Duanmu Bai dared to make a move, no matter what it was, even if the king’s father came, he would still smash this blind fool into mincemeat!

“Alright, alright! Since you two will be partners from now on, there’s no need for such pointless bickering!”

Seeing that the situation was going awry, Huang Zhen opened her mouth to mediate. Hou Jie and Chai Pengyu exchanged glances, conveying a message. So the big sister planned to recruit both of them into the team. However, could these two, who started off on the wrong foot, actually cooperate seamlessly, or would they bring chaos to the team instead?

“Miss Huang, you want this kid to join the team too?”

A look of surprise flashed across Duanmu Bai’s face, “This guy who’s got no strength and all talk, aren’t you afraid he’ll drag you down?”

“I said, both of you will be comrades from now on, so stop making comments that aren’t conducive to unity! I’m the leader of the Rose Mercenary Group, and who I recruit is my decision. Everyone else should just focus on their own tasks without additional comments!”

Huang Zhen’s expression darkened as she spoke sternly, her tone leaving no room for objection. Duanmu Bai opened his mouth to retort, but upon seeing Huang Zhen’s disapproving look, he ultimately didn’t say anything. He just shot Sun Wukong a disgruntled glance and turned his head away.

Sun Wukong ignored him, simply nodding at Huang Zhen without thanking her. Honestly, if not for Huang Zhen stepping in to stop Duanmu Bai taking real action, Sun Wukong would have slapped the guy silly by now. He hoped that Duanmu Bai would know better from now on, or else Sun Wukong wouldn’t mind showing his strength and getting rid of this annoying pest!

“Duanmu Bai, what’s your Demon Primordial Force attribute?”

Huang Zhen asked, looking at Duanmu Bai.

“Our Duanmu Family is famous for its defensive power. My Demon Primordial Force attribute is, of course, the Defensive Attribute!”

Duanmu Bai opened his folding fan with a flick and shook it, “Miss Huang, when the time comes, you all just follow behind me. With me in front, no Demonic Beast will come near you!”

Saying this, Duanmu Bai provocatively chin-lifted toward Sun Wukong, who pretended not to see and did not even acknowledge him.

An ant swings its fist to challenge a giant dragon. Does the dragon care? Is there a need to care?

Sun Wukong’s dismissive attitude secretly infuriated Duanmu Bai. He wanted to burst out but feared leaving a bad impression on Huang Zhen, so he had to swallow his anger for now, thinking bitterly, “Damn brat, just you wait! Once we’re in the Myriad Beast Mountains, I’ll make sure you have no place to bury your body! Daring to compete with me for a woman, you’ll regret ever coming to this world!”

“Alright then, Duanmu Bai, you’ll take charge of distracting the Demonic Beasts. You, uh, what’s your name?”

“Sun Wukong.”

“Sun Wukong? That’s a strange name, but nevermind. You will handle close combat. Be careful there—the beasts in the Myriad Beast Mountains are much more ferocious than those wandering around the Demonic Realm. We’re crossing the bridge together, and hopefully, we can all make it back!”

Huang Zhen’s eyes flickered. It seemed there wasn’t any famous Family Head surnamed Sun in the Demonic Realm. Where did Sun Wukong get the courage to stand toe-to-toe with Duanmu Bai, a scion of the prestigious Duanmu Family, without giving an inch?

Well, having one more person is better than none. Whether it’s empty talk or real skills, it will be clear once we reach the Myriad Beast Mountains.

“Both of you, there’s something I need to clarify in advance. I don’t have much bounty to offer you right now, so I can only owe you for the time being. Once we kill the Demonic Beasts in the Myriad Beast Mountains and get the Demon Cores, both of your rewards can be a bit more than the equal share among five people.”

“No worries, dividing more or less doesn’t matter to me, Old Sun. Just make up your own mind.”

Sun Wukong waved his hand dismissively. His goal was to track down the whereabouts of the Heaven-Defying Demon Emperor Mu Chenxuan and his ilk in the Myriad Beast Mountains, not to actually hunt Demonic Beasts for their Demon Cores. He really didn’t care about the compensation.

“Putting on an act!”

No matter how Duanmu Bai looked at Sun Wukong, he couldn’t stand him and snorted coldly at Huang Zhen’s words, “I don’t care either. The Duanmu Family isn’t short of money. I just want to take a tour of the Demon Beast Continent, so bounty doesn’t matter to me!”

“That’s good!”

Huang Zhen nodded, relieved. The biggest problem troubling the Rose Mercenary Group was now solved, and they could move through the Boundary Bridge to the Demon Beast Continent. Hopefully, this expedition would yield some results, or else the Rose Mercenary Group might really struggle to continue.
