Chapter 239: Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty-Nine: Afternoon Tea Time
Su Jin went upstairs and cleaned herself up, then sat at the desk, rummaging through her bag for something.
At that moment, Lu Hao also pushed the door open. The room was filled with the scent of Su Jin’s bath. Thinking that he hadn’t showered yet, he resisted the urge to embrace Su Jin and asked, “What are you looking for?”
“Hmm? Today, I asked Lin Xiuyuan to record a video on my phone. I remember I put it in my bag,” Su Jin continued to search without looking up.
“Okay, then I’ll go take a shower,” Lu Hao said, seeing that Su Jin was too busy to pay attention to him, and headed to the bathroom feeling a bit dejected.
She finally found it.
Su Jin looked at the phone in her hand, and since Lu Hao was still in the shower, she locked the room and entered her space.
The rice in the space seemed ready to be harvested again. The grains harvested last time were still piling up in the warehouse. It was really a problem to deal with all these grains.
Su Jin walked into the Lu Residence and saw her grandparents sitting in the courtyard, picking beans and chatting together.
Seeing Su Jin come in, the elderly couple was very happy, discussing the mission Su Jin and her group had undertaken over the past few days.
“Xiao Jin, did you complete the mission?” Li Xiuying asked with a smile.
“Yes, it’s complete. It’s just that there were some casualties today,” Su Jin affectionately hugged her grandmother’s neck as she spoke.
Li Xiuying could sense that Su Jin’s tone became noticeably somber when she mentioned the casualties.
“It’s good that it’s complete. Are there still so many zombies outside?” she had been thinking since she heard about Su Jin’s group escorting so many survivors to the base what the city outside had turned into, and why everyone needed to gather in a safe refuge.
“Oh, I already had Lin Xiuyuan capture it on video. Do you want to see it now?”
“Yes, yes. Let me see it quickly,” Lin Yunguo also put down his beans, eager to see for himself.
Su Jin nodded, took out the phone from her pocket. She had earlier retrieved an old phone she had used and given it to Lin Xiuyuan, instructing him to record the outside scenery from the car as much as possible after hearing her grandparents were curious about the transformations outside.
Li Xiuying took the phone and together with Lin Yunguo, they earnestly started watching.
“We have now left City West and are on the way to the refuge. This area used to be a commercial street…”
The background audio in the phone was Lin Xiuyuan’s narration. He carefully described the scenery captured on the video until a zombie suddenly ran into view.
“Oh no!” Li Xiuying, startled, quickly turned her head away, and even Lin Yunguo was taken aback.
The city, already riddled with scars, had them engrossed, but the sudden appearance of a zombie with a rotting face was really frightening.
“Maybe… we should stop watching?”
Su Jin was genuinely worried that the elderly couple might have nightmares that night.
“No, we must watch,”
Li Xiuying said firmly. She wanted to understand the kind of world her family was now living in.
Until the playback bar reached the end, the elders were silent. Outside was no longer recognizable as a city; it resembled a hell on earth.
“Ah!”
Lin Yunguo sighed deeply. He wanted to say something but didn’t know what to say.
Li Xiuying felt a tingling in her nose, not just out of sympathy for the family, but thinking of all mankind having to endure these experiences, regardless of gender, age…
“Xiao Jin, you have already done very well, even managing to protect so many people and bring them back to the base. Not everyone can do this,”
Li Xiuying sighed and began to comfort Su Jin, remembering the sense of loss in her words just now.
She didn’t want Su Jin to feel too pressured. Although Su Jin always seemed calm and composed, Li Xiuying knew her character well. She was sure that Su Jin still felt uneasy inside.
“Yes, Xiao Jin, being with our family, you are really doing something beneficial for all humanity. It’s truly remarkable,” Lin Yunguo also said.
Although she knew her grandparents were trying to comfort her, Su Jin still smiled when she heard them, and felt much better.
On her way back, she had thought that if she had insisted like before, not letting those Guard squad members and Special Ability Users come down to help, maybe those people wouldn’t have died—but she didn’t.
She hadn’t expected her grandmother to be so perceptive and to have noticed this.
Lu Hao stood outside the Lu Residence, listening to the conversation and laughter inside, and couldn’t help but smile.
He somewhat understood why Su Jin valued her family so much. Indeed, even he hadn’t noticed Su Jin’s worries, but her grandmother had detected them just from a few words.
It was really heartwarming.
Seeing Lu Hao enter, Li Xiuying hurriedly called him to sit down. It was clear that Lu Hao had come looking for Su Jin, and the two of them together really were reassuring.
The four of them chatted for a while longer, then Su Jin pulled Lu Hao to the back kitchen to look for something to eat. There was a shelf specially stocked with desserts and snacks—some made by her grandfather, some by her aunt, and others she had bought from a store before the Apocalypse.
“Which one do you want to eat? Pick one yourself, so I can take it out with the rest,” Su Jin said while she chose what else to bring out.
“Hmm, let’s go with this one,” Lu Hao said, pointing to a plate of cream pancakes. He remembered that Su Jin loved them too.
Su Jin smiled, her eyes curving up. Cream pancakes were her favorite, along with old-fashioned cakes, mung bean cakes, egg rolls, and so on. She decided to bring some of these out as well.
In the end, she thought that all sweets might be a bit too rich, so she also took some fried chicken pieces, lemon chicken feet, and beef stuffed pies made by Lin Yunguo.
Su Jin didn’t put these items on the dining table but placed them directly on the marble coffee table next to the sofa.
Nie Qing and Lin Xiuyuan had already finished washing up and were waiting downstairs for Su Jin. The sound of slippers coming down the stairs could be heard; it turned out that Lu Guanhai had also come down.
“Wow, I can never get enough of this mung bean cake,” Nie Qing had already started eating.
“Uncle Nie, I’ve also prepared some red tea here, which you can enjoy together,” Su Jin recommended.
“Very good, very good, thank you, girl,” he responded.
Just then, Xue Wanyi walked over from the secondary house. He felt a bit overwhelmed by the table full of sweets, but fortunately, there were also fried chicken pieces and pies. The beef pies were simply delicious, and he wondered where Su Jin had bought them.
“Why hasn’t Yifan come over yet?”
They had been eating for a while, but Liao Yifan hadn’t appeared yet.
“I’ll go check,” Su Jin said, standing up, about to head to the secondary house, when suddenly, the door connecting to the secondary house in the courtyard was pushed open with a bang; Liao Yifan walked in with a face full of joy and announced, “I’ve leveled up!”
“That’s great, Yifan,”
Huang Yunxiang also joined everyone in congratulating her.@@novelbin@@
“I’m really curious about one thing. When a Power Element Ability User levels up, is it just a change in the amount of strength?” Lin Xiuyuan asked while eating.
“I don’t know, but I do think my strength has increased a lot,” Liao Yifan expressed that she had just touched the door, and it was pushed open with great force.
What do you think?
