Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Is He the Only One in Your Heart?
Ji Zeqiu rushed to the hospital as soon as he received Ji Yuqiao’s call.
However, the film set was far from home, and by the time he finally took a flight back, it was already dark.
Arriving at the hospital in a hurry, he saw Ji Yuqiao with eyes swollen like walnuts from crying as soon as he got out of the car.
Her eyes shimmered with tears, falling non-stop in plops, a sight that was heart-wrenching to see.
Ji Zeqiu anxiously asked, “And mother? Where is she now?”
“Mother is still unconscious in the ward, big brother is taking care of her,” Ji Yuqiao sobbed as she spoke.
Ji Zeqiu’s heart was filled with panic and anxiety; he couldn’t calm down until he saw Lin Xu.
He had no mind to comfort Ji Yuqiao and hastily made his way toward the ward.
As he pushed the door open, the first thing he saw was Lin Xu lying on the hospital bed, attached to various medical monitors, exuding an aura of death.
Ji Zeqiu’s body shook uncontrollably, as if a dagger was stirring in his chest, sharp and bone-piercing pain washing over him like a tide, too much for him to bear.
He opened his mouth and with difficulty let out, “Why… why did the car accident happen?”
Ji Tingyang looked up, his eyes devoid of their usual sparkle. His face had grown pale and haggard in just a day, his tightly furrowed brow filled with sorrow and pain.
He responded, “A truck driver was driving fatigued, ran a red light, and plowed into them…”
Again with truck drivers…
Again running red lights…
Ji Zeqiu couldn’t help but recall the car accident that took his parents’ lives twenty years ago.
It was exactly the same.
The only difference was, this time there were no deadly steel pipes.
Ji Zeqiu looked at Lin Xu on the bed, veins throbbing at his temples, he stepped forward, grabbed Ji Tingyang by the collar, and whispered hoarsely, “Weren’t you taking care of Mother? Is this how you let her come to harm? Is this your idea of care?!”
He pulled Ji Tingyang up from the chair and slammed him against the wall with a “bang.”
Ji Tingyang bit his lip tightly, unable to offer a defense.
Tears in Ji Yuqiao’s eyes surged like a breached dam. She stepped forward and took hold of Ji Zeqiu’s hand, weeping bitterly, “It’s not big brother’s fault, it’s all my doing, sob sob sob…”
“If I hadn’t asked Mother to go to Rong Mountain, if I hadn’t kept it from big brother, she wouldn’t have had the accident… sob sob sob…”
“It’s all my fault…” She cried heart-wrenchingly.
“You!” Ji Zeqiu clenched his back teeth, looking at her tear-streaked face, the harsh words he had in his heart couldn’t be voiced.
He let go of Ji Tingyang’s clothes, frustratedly ran his hands through his hair, and muttered a curse under his breath.
Hearing the commotion that had just occurred in the ward, a nurse came over and knocked on the door, “The patient needs quiet now, please don’t make noise.”
Hearing the nurse’s reminder, Ji Yuqiao’s loud crying turned into silent sobs.
“What did the doctor say?” Ji Zeqiu asked in a low voice.
“The doctor said there’s no threat to her life, she just passed out, but it’s not known when she will wake up,” Ji Tingyang said.
Learning that Lin Xu’s life was not in danger, the rock that had been hanging in Ji Zeqiu’s heart finally settled down.
…
As time gradually passed, the night grew deeper.
The visiting hours at the hospital had ended, and only one person could stay in the ward overnight.
However, none of the three of them were willing to go back, and in the end, it was Ji Tingyang, as the eldest brother, who made a suggestion, “I’ll stay tonight, and you guys can come over tomorrow to take over.”
Ji Yuqiao was about to make a fuss but was stopped by Ji Tingyang’s sharp gaze.
“Alright then, if Mother wakes up, you must call me right away,” Ji Yuqiao said, reluctantly leaving the hospital.
Ji Zeqiu gave Lin Xu a deep look before turning to leave as well.
The ward fell quiet again.
In the deep silence of the night, Ji Tingyang could no longer suppress the sourness in his heart, his eyes reddening and filling with a layer of desolation.
He held Lin Xu’s hand, pressing it against his forehead and silently praying for her safety.
He maintained this position for a long while, until the hand he was holding suddenly moved.
Ji Tingyang abruptly raised his head, looking towards Lin Xu on the bed and tentatively called out to her, “Mother?”
Lin Xu slowly opened her eyes, her blurry vision gradually focusing to first fall upon Ji Tingyang’s reddened eyes.
She struggled to raise her hand, her fingertips gently brushing past the corner of his eyes, “I’m fine, don’t be upset…”
Her voice was very light, like a feather that could be blown away by a breeze.
Hearing this, Ji Tingyang’s eyes reddened even more, and he hurriedly pressed the call button by the bed.
The doctor bustled in to examine her, “The patient’s condition has stabilized, just focus on recovery from now on.”
Relieved by the doctor’s words, Ji Tingyang let out a breath, “Mother, how do you feel? Is there any discomfort…?”
“How is Xie Changyan now?”
He hadn’t finished speaking when Lin Xu interrupted him.
Ji Tingyang’s voice stalled, the joy he felt upon discovering she was awake immediately sinking, an unnoticeable fury shadowing his eyes and brows, “He’s very well, and he doesn’t need your concern.”
“Really? How is he now…”
“Is he the only one in your heart?” Ji Tingyang’s voice was hoarse, his tone alarmingly calm.
He looked at Lin Xu, his eyes flickering with a barely detectable dimness.
He had worried about Lin Xu all day, yet the first thing she asked about upon waking up was Xie Changyan.
Ji Tingyang clenched the hand at his side, his fingernails digging into his palm, a sensation of pain spreading from the hand.
Lin Xu hesitated for a moment, then struggled to sit up from the bed.
Ji Tingyang’s complexion wavered for a moment before he reached out to steady her.
Lin Xu gently caressed his face, her fingertips tracing the tears at the corner of his eyes, “I’m sorry, Tingyang must be very upset, you must have been scared when you heard about my accident.”
Ji Tingyang tried to hide the loss on his face, but when he opened his mouth, a hoarse sob emerged, “I don’t want your apology.”
He just couldn’t accept his mother’s neglect…
“I know Tingyang must be very upset, afraid something would happen to me, right?” Lin Xu touched his head, “I shouldn’t have snuck out without telling you. I won’t make you worry anymore, can you forgive me?”
A sourness churned in his stomach, Ji Tingyang’s lips parted and closed several times, wanting to voice his blame, but the words rolled back and forth in his throat, ultimately being swallowed down.
He bent down, holding her hand tightly, yet fearing he might hurt her wounds, he relaxed his grip a bit.
Ji Tingyang’s chin rested on her shoulder, his voice hoarse and low, “Okay.”
A simple word from Lin Xu easily dispelled the discomfort and grievances in his heart.
What do you think?
