Chapter 286: Chapter 286: Return to 20 Years Ago (21)

Ji Lanyue had been vacationing on the island for a long time. After she returned, the vacation ended, and she went back to school to start classes.

Her mind wasn’t fully back yet, and she propped her head on her palms, daydreaming.

“Lanyue, Lanyue…” A classmate nudged her shoulder.

Ji Lanyue snapped back to reality.

“The teacher’s calling you to get your test paper,” the classmate reminded her.

Ji Lanyue immediately stood up and walked to the lectern.

The teacher handed her the test paper with a beaming smile, then loudly said to the class, “Everyone should learn from Ji Lanyue. She’s scored first place in the major again on this test.”

No sooner had Ji Lanyue sat down at her desk, classmates leaned in to glance at her paper, and seeing the bright red 100 score, they let out a burst of envious sighs.

“You’re amazing, always ranking first. I wonder when I’ll be as great as you, effortlessly scoring the top spot.”

Ji Lanyue smiled.

It had not been effortless for her.

Since she was young, her father and mother had hired many tutors for her. When other children played outside, she would still be having lessons in her room.

This continued for over a decade until she finally gained her freedom when she went to college.

Moreover, she had heard these kinds of remarks too often.

Since grade school, she had always been at the top of her class, where classmates had said similar things to her.

At first, she would earnestly give advice, telling them to read more and practice more questions after class, or to take extra lessons; their grades would slowly improve.

But they would mumble excuses in response.

Over time, Ji Lanyue stopped offering such advice.

“I remember there’s also someone really impressive in the computer science department. What was his name… Xiao something? He always ranks first in their major, too, just like you,” a classmate said.

“Xiao Yu.” Ji Lanyue said his name.

Although she didn’t know him personally, she had heard of his name and various rumors about him ever since she enrolled.

Like how a girl from a certain major confessed to him and got rejected, or how he won first place in the school’s debate competition, or even how he received a first-place award in a national mathematics contest…

“Right, right, right.” The classmate held her cheeks in her hands with sparkly, bashful eyes, “I saw him once before. He’s got great grades and looks handsome too, a true campus celebrity.”

Ji Lanyue silently listened to her classmate’s flattering words, unconvinced.

Campus celebrity?

Could he even compare to her father and two older brothers in looks?

“By the way, I remember they have a basketball game this afternoon. Let’s go watch it after our class finishes,” the classmate said excitedly.

“I was thinking of going home early today, so I won’t go.”

“Just watch for a few minutes; it won’t take much of your time.”

Persuaded by her classmate’s incessant pleading, Ji Lanyue ended up being dragged to the basketball court.

The spectator seats were filled with many girls, leaving Ji Lanyue unable to find a seat, so she had to stand on the sidelines.

“Ah.” Her classmate held her head and let out a frustrated cry, “We’re too late; all the seats are taken.”

Ji Lanyue was also surprised.

It was just a basketball game, yet so many people had come to watch.

“Nevermind, we’ll stand for a while. I’ll look for Xiao Yu,” the classmate said, surveying the court. After scanning the area, she furrowed her brows, “Strange, I don’t see him. Could he be not playing today?”

But if Xiao Yu wasn’t playing, it was unlikely for there to be this many girls watching the game.

The classmate continued to search for Xiao Yu.

Ji Lanyue, on the other hand, suddenly felt something off in her stomach, like an intuition, and frowning she said, “I’m going to the restroom.”

“Okay, hurry back, or you might miss Xiao Yu’s appearance,” a classmate’s voice came from behind.

Ji Lanyue quickly entered the restroom and looked down to see a smudge of red blood on her pants.

She hadn’t expected her period to come at this time.

Ji Lanyue called her classmate, hoping she could help her buy a pack of sanitary pads.

Perhaps it was because the cheering from the basketball court was too loud, but the phone wasn’t answered even after two tries.

Never mind.

The school’s mini-mart wasn’t far from here, so she decided to go buy some herself.

With that thought, Ji Lanyue left the restroom.

Her steps were too hurried, and she bumped into someone coming out of the men’s restroom opposite.

Ji Lanyue staggered backward a few steps, clutching her head and hissing softly.

“Are you okay?” the boy’s voice was clean and clear, with a hint of apology in his tone.

“I’m fine,” Ji Lanyue waved her hand dismissively, “It’s my own fault for not watching where I was going.”

She lifted her head to look at the boy.

He had a neat and tidy short haircut, was dressed in a blue basketball uniform, and was quite handsome, although he couldn’t quite compare to her elder and second brothers.

However, when she saw the white bandage in his hand, Ji Lanyue’s pupils shrank in surprise, “Your hand isn’t injured because of me, is it?”

Following her gaze, the boy knew she had misunderstood, “This isn’t a bandage, it’s a wrist guard for playing basketball.”

Ji Lanyue patted her chest and breathed a sigh of relief.

If her mother knew she was so careless walking around and even managed to hurt someone, her allowance would definitely be cut in half.

“If you’re okay, then that’s good. I need to get going,” she waved and hurried off.

She had only taken a few steps when the boy called out, “Hey, classmate, wait.”

Ji Lanyue turned around, looking at him questioningly.

A hint of hesitation appeared on the boy’s face as he handed over his jacket to her, “Your pants… they’re stained.”

Ji Lanyue’s expression remained rather composed, “Yes, that’s why I’m rushing to the supermarket to buy sanitary pads right now.”

“Here, take my jacket to cover up with,” he offered the jacket he was holding once more.

“No, thank you,” Ji Lanyue said and without pausing any longer, continued on her way.

She could still faintly hear the voices of girls outside the restroom hallway behind her.

“Xiao Yu is so gentle and considerate, even lending his jacket to someone. If I were that girl, I’d be so touched!”

Ji Lanyue’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

So that boy was Xiao Yu?

He seemed pretty ordinary.

And as for being moved by the loan of a jacket, that kind of emotional response was too cheap.

It wasn’t even comparable to when she had an unrelenting fever and her mother stayed by her bed for two days and nights to take care of her.

Or the pocket money from her father, the pudding bought by her eldest brother, the bags and clothes bought by her second brother…

Thinking about these things, Ji Lanyue’s mood warmed considerably.

Maybe she should buy them some gifts when she went out tomorrow?

That’s what Ji Lanyue considered, but when she got home and saw Ji Zeqiu sneaking her pudding next to the fridge, the thought of buying gifts was dismissed.

She clenched her fist and ran over, “Ji Zeqiu, that’s my pudding!”
