Chapter 454
Mu Yang had been holed up in the villa for over ten days.
Their food supplies were nearly depleted.
The Mu Family always preferred fresh ingredients, relying on daily grocery runs, so they never kept much stocked at home.
If it weren’t for the dinner they had hosted for the Ye Family that night, the remaining food wouldn’t have lasted even a week.
"Where are you going?"
Seeing Mu Yang fully armed, gripping a large wrench as he headed for the door, Ye Lingwei rushed forward in a panic.
"Looking for food," Mu Yang replied flatly.
Ye Lingwei immediately grew frantic. "Are you trying to abandon me here?! No way—I’m coming with you!"
A dull ache throbbed in Mu Yang’s temples.
But Ye Lingwei was determined to follow him, and fearing she might make noise and attract zombies, Mu Yang reluctantly gave in.
"Stay close. Don’t make a sound."
After issuing the warning, he carefully opened the door, scanned the surroundings, and only then turned to start the car.
Ye Lingwei hurried after him, scrambling into the passenger seat.
Without a word, Mu Yang handed her a machete.
"Use this if there’s danger."
Ye Lingwei hesitated.
She had no idea how to wield such a thing!
But afraid that refusing might make Mu Yang leave her behind, she reluctantly took it.
As the car pulled out of the villa, zombies immediately lurched toward them at the sound of the engine.
"Ahhh!"
Watching the undead charge at the car as if they were about to pounce, Ye Lingwei shrieked uncontrollably.
"Shut up!"
Mu Yang couldn’t take it anymore and snapped at her.
He slammed the accelerator, plowing through the oncoming zombies and sending them flying.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
The car shuddered with each impact.
Ye Lingwei froze, stunned by his outburst.
She wanted to lash out, but remembering she still needed Mu Yang’s protection, she swallowed her anger.
The car sped out of the neighborhood, only to encounter even more zombies on the road.
Fortunately, Mu Yang was a skilled driver and knew the area well, allowing him to dodge wave after wave of the undead.
Ye Lingwei clung to the armrest, lips sealed, not daring to make another sound.
Mu Yang had initially planned to scavenge for food near the neighborhood, but the streets were too overrun.
Especially with Ye Lingwei in tow.
If he were alone, he could’ve parked and sneaked out to try his luck.
But leaving her in the car wasn’t an option—she’d never agree to it.
And taking her outside?
Even riskier.
So he turned the wheel and drove toward an auto repair shop.
The area had fewer people, and nearby was a food warehouse.
From what he knew, the factory had closed two days prior for a holiday.
Meaning there shouldn’t be many zombies inside.
"Wait here. It’s safe. I’ll go find food nearby and come back."
Mu Yang parked at the repair shop and gestured for Ye Lingwei to get inside.
Her face twisted with reluctance.
She was terrified he’d abandon her.
All her pent-up frustration erupted.
"You just don’t want me around, do you?! I’m still your godparents’ goddaughter! If you leave me, you’re heartless!"
Mu Yang’s patience wore thin.
Fine. If she wanted to come, so be it.
An hour later, Mu Yang was stuffing food into a prepared bag when—
"Ahhh! Mu Yang, save me! AHHH!"
Ye Lingwei’s screams echoed from the warehouse entrance.
Mu Yang whipped around to see her sprinting toward him, a zombie in employee uniform clawing at her heels.
"Shut up!" he hissed through gritted teeth.
Her screaming would only draw more of them.
His fears materialized instantly.
Three more zombies staggered through the doorway.
Now they were trapped inside with only one exit—meaning they’d have to take down all four to escape.
Mu Yang tightened his grip on the wrench.
Ye Lingwei cowered behind him, trembling uncontrollably.
The zombies shifted their focus to Mu Yang.
He steadied himself and swung the wrench.
One zombie was manageable, but four at once pushed him to his limits.
This wasn’t a brawl with humans—one scratch or bite from these things meant death.
Meanwhile, Ye Lingwei had ducked behind a shelf, making no move to help.
To make matters worse, two more zombies shambled in, drawn by the noise.
Mu Yang’s strength was fading fast.
Just as he was about to collapse, a group rushed in.
With their aid, the zombies were finally dealt with.
"Hi, I’m Li Yan."
Li Yan extended a hand.
Mu Yang shook it gratefully. "Thanks for the backup."
Without them, he wouldn’t have lasted much longer.
Ye Lingwei emerged from the shelves, feigning concern as she approached Mu Yang.
"Mu Yang, are you okay?"
"I’m fine," he replied curtly.
After some conversation, Mu Yang learned Li Yan’s group had also come for supplies.
They’d rushed over after hearing Ye Lingwei’s screams.
From that day on, Mu Yang and Ye Lingwei joined Li Yan’s team.
They established a small survivor base on the outskirts.
Thanks to Mu Yang’s exceptional skills, he gradually became the group’s pillar of strength.
Whenever trouble arose, people looked to him—not Li Yan—for leadership.
This fed Ye Lingwei’s vanity immensely.
In her mind, Mu Yang was her fiancé.
She even subtly spread the idea among the others.
Soon, everyone assumed they were a couple.
But in truth, Mu Yang had never acknowledged it.
He was too busy gathering supplies and fortifying the base to entertain her antics.
Mu Yang’s competence didn’t just attract Ye Lingwei’s clinginess.
It also stoked the resentment of Li Yan, who masked his pettiness behind a facade of generosity.
Mu Yang’s rise threatened his position as leader.
So one day, Li Yan led Mu Yang, Ye Lingwei, and others to Rong City.
Officially, they were there to transport grain.
In reality, it was a ploy to eliminate Mu Yang.
Mu Yang had no inkling of Li Yan’s scheme.
To him, he was simply doing his best to ensure everyone’s survival—scouting supplies, strengthening the base.
He contributed wherever he could, with hands or mind.
And he genuinely respected Li Yan, grateful for the man’s earlier rescue.
It never crossed his mind that his efforts would breed envy.
Had he known—or if Li Yan had just spoken up—he would’ve left without hesitation.
The group arrived in Rong City.
There, to his surprise, Mu Yang encountered the petite girl who’d once hired him to modify her car.
Somehow, she was thriving alone in the zombie-infested city.
Calm, collected, and far more capable than him.
He found it astonishing.
Though he wanted to bring her along, she refused.
He felt a tinge of regret about their parting, but he genuinely hoped that little one would live a good life.
They went to move the grain.
Yet he never expected that Li Yan—the man who had once saved him and whom he had always regarded as an elder brother—would try to kill him!
Fortunately, he managed to escape with every ounce of his strength.
He began wandering the streets of Rong City.
To his surprise, he encountered that child again.
Now, she had a few more people by her side.
All of them were quite interesting.
Being with them, he felt truly at ease.
What do you think?
