Chapter 70 Popular
{Melisa}
Melisa strode through the busy halls of the academy, her footsteps echoing against the polished marble floors.
As Melisa wove her way through the crowd, she couldn't shake the prickling sensation of eyes following her every move.
It was a feeling that had become all too familiar over the past week.
That news, which Melisa had figured would probably spread at some point, had sent shockwaves through the academy.
No, through all of Syux.
Anonymous testimonies began to surface about the fight that happened. Suddenly, it felt like anyone who had been previously blissfully unaware, all five of them perhaps, now knew that there was a nim on campus, a nim with enough magical talent to catch the attention of the Shadow Mages and that they'd tried and failed to eliminate her.
Up until now, all their previous attempts had been firmly swept under the rug. It was part of why she never had to answer for killing any of them; the officials would rather pretend those fights never happened. This one hadn't.
The details had not spread in the same way, though. Thanks in no small part to the people behind the scenes at the academy influencing the local papers, only a few people knew Miria had been exposed as a Shadow Mage and only a handful of people knew Raven had been one as well.
This was done so as to limit the amount of eyes on the Academy, as much as they could, anyway.
Melisa kept her head high as she walked, ignoring the curious stares and hushed murmurs that followed in her wake.
She knew that her newfound notoriety was only partly due to the shadow mage incident, though.
The other reason, the one that made her skin tingle and her heart race, was far more personal.
Her pheromones, unleashed in full force after her passionate night with Isabella, hung in the air around her like an invisible cloak.
She could feel it. She could feel it like magic radiating off her.
She could see the way her pheromones made eyes glaze and pulses quicken as she passed by.
It was an odd feeling, knowing the effect she had on those around her. She'd known since she reincarnated, that she was effectively a succubus, of course. But, this was her first time genuinely feeling like one, the way every. single. person who walked past her damn near passed out due to her scent.
As Melisa approached the classroom door, she took a deep breath, centering herself.
Because she could feel her pheromones, Melisa had also already discovered she could manipulate them.
Specifically, she could sort of shorten this new "aura"... By about a single foot.
Still, she focused on reeling in her pheromones, on keeping them contained within a tight radius around her body. She'd learned, through trial and error, that a distance of about four feet was her current area of effect.
With a final, steadying exhale, Melisa pushed open the door and stepped inside.
The room was already half-full, students clustered in small groups as they waited for the lesson to begin.
As had become normal this week, heads turned at her entrance, eyes widening and nostrils flaring as Melisa passed by people.
Melisa kept her gaze forward, making her way to her usual seat in the back corner of the room.
[Aaaaaaah, I'm so horny... Is this normal? I mean, it almost feels like my own pheromones are affecting me too!]
It was a hard feeling to describe.
A hunger? An itch?
The point was that Melisa was currently fighting the feeling of wanting to tackle the girl sitting to her right, with her short brown hair and cute freckles... It would probably lead to more than a few problems.
[This is what Mom was talking about, I'm sure.]
Still, she had to carry on as normal.
Settling into her chair, Melisa began to unpack her books and supplies, focusing on the mundane task of preparing for class.
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she almost didn't notice the soft footsteps approaching her desk.
But then a familiar cherry blossom scent washed over her, warm and sweet and tinged with just a hint of spice, and Melisa looked up into the dancing emerald eyes of her cousin.
"Good morning," Isabella purred, her voice low and throaty. Without waiting for an invitation, she perched herself on the edge of Melisa's lap, her long legs crossed elegantly at the knee.
Melisa felt a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, felt the tight coil of tension in her chest begin to unwind.
With Isabella, there was no need for distance or restraint. She'd found this out too, and Melisa took full advantage of it, pulling her in closer. Explore new worlds at My Virtual Library Empire
See, the kitsune girl seemed resistant to Melisa's pheromones, able to think clearly even at this distance, well within Melisa's "strike zone".
[Is resistant the right word? I wish I could study this effect. Why is Isabella having such an easy time around me? Could it be because she's a kitsune? I mean, if so, then it's no wonder our races are so fond of each other. I don't know.]
"Morning," Melisa murmured back, leaning back.
Isabella grinned, her sharp canines glinting in the sunlight coming in through the windows.
"So... Any chance I can get you to skip class?"
Melisa rolled her eyes with a smile.
"No."
[Yes.]
Isabella leaned in closer.
"It was worth a shot. You know, I couldn't stop thinking about you all night. About the way you felt in my arms, the sounds you made as I stuck my c-"@@novelbin@@
Melisa swatted at her, fighting back a blush even as a thrill of heat raced down her spine.
"I-Izzy! We're in public."
The girl just laughed.
Soon, Melisa caught sight of her other friends.
Armia strode in first, her golden scales glinting in the morning light, her draconic tail swishing behind her as she navigated the crowded room.
Then, Raven followed close behind, her dark hair falling in a curtain around her pale face. She kept her head down, her grey eyes fixed on the floor as she made her way to her seat.
Melisa felt some warmth bloom in her chest.
As if sensing her gaze, Raven looked up, her eyes meeting Melisa's across the room.
For a moment, they simply looked at each other, a wealth of unspoken emotions passing between them.
Then, slowly, hesitantly, Raven's lips curved into a small, tentative smile, as she waved.
[MMMM!] Melisa damn near had a heart attack.
All the girl did was wave to her, and yet, that might have been the cutest thing she'd ever seen.
Melisa grinned, waving back. Raven ducked her head and that was that.
The lessons, this one and the next two, passed in a blur of lecturing and note-taking, Melisa's mind only half-focused on the material.
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, Melisa was on her feet in an instant. Isabella rose with her, their hands finding each other's automatically as they made their way towards the door.
Out in the hallway, Armia and Raven caught up to them, both girls looking slightly nervous as they approached.
"Hey," Armia said, her deep voice rumbling in her chest. "Got a minute, Melisa?"
Isabella smirked.
"Yeah, what's up?" Melisa answered, making sure to step back and keep that four-feet space from them.
The darian girl shifted her weight, her tail twitching behind her.
"I... was hoping we could work on some spells later."
Isabella scoffed.
"Best excuse you could come up with?"
"Shut it, fox."
Isabella flipped her off with a smirk.
As Armia and Isabella started bickering, tails moving energetically behind them, Raven walked up.
"Melisa," she said. "I... was wondering if you wanted to grab lunch with me."
There was a beat of silence as all three girls turned to stare at Raven.
The dark-haired girl did not even glance at Isabella and Armia.
"If you want to," Raven added quietly.
"I'd love to," Melisa said automatically, reaching out to squeeze Raven's hand.
The shadow mage startled at the contact, her eyes widening. But she didn't pull away.
Melisa turned to the other two girls.
"In fact," she said, "why don't we all go together? A little group bonding session, just the four of us."
"..."
Armia and Isabella exchanged a glance.
Melisa could practically see the gears turning in their heads as they weighed the pros and cons of spending an extended period of time in each other's company.
"I'd be fine with that," Raven said, keeping her eyes on Melisa.
Armia shrugged.
"Sure," she said. "I could eat."
"Alright. Count me in," Isabella chimed, her tail waving lazily behind her.
Melisa clapped her hands together.
"Perfect!" she exclaimed. "Let's go, then. I know just the spot."
And... That was it.
The four of them walked down the halls.
With Melisa being the happiest one there.
---
The restaurant was a cozy little place.
The four girls settled into a booth, an awkward silence descending over the table as they browsed their menus.
Isabella, never one to let an opportunity pass her by, draped herself over Melisa. Almost to an uncomfortable degree, to be honest.
She even interlocked their fingers together, resting her head on the nim girl's shoulder with a contented sigh.
Melisa caught sight of Armia's annoyed expression out of the corner of her eye.
The darian girl's jaw was clenched as she locked eyes with Isabella.
Raven, on the other hand, seemed utterly oblivious to the tension simmering around her.
She kept her gaze fixed on her menu, her brow furrowed in concentration as she scanned the list of unfamiliar dishes.
Their food soon arrived in short order, steaming plates of fragrant stew and crusty bread. As they began to eat, Melisa asked:
"So, Raven. What have you been up to lately?"
Raven looked up.
"I've been trying to learn other forms of magic," she said quietly, her voice barely audible over the clink of cutlery. "Branching out, so to speak."
Melisa leaned forward, intrigued.
"Oh? Like what?"
Raven ducked her head a little, a faint blush staining her pale cheeks.
"Healing," she mumbled, so softly that Melisa had to strain to hear her. "I spoke to some of the doctors at the clinic while I was there. I... want to learn how to heal people."
Armia looked up at that, her eyes widening with surprise.
"Healing, huh?" she said. "You know, I picked up a few tricks in that department over the last couple of months. I could show you some basic spells, if you want."
Isabella scoffed.
"Please," she said, rolling her eyes. "If Miss Nightsong is going to learn healing magic, she needs a quality teacher. Someone with real experience and skill."
Armia raised an eyebrow.
"Someone like you, I suppose?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Isabella tossed her hair, a smug smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
"As a matter of fact, yes. Someone as skilled and talented as myself would be perfect."
"Would you like to teach me?" Raven asked casually.
"No. I was not signing up for the job, I was just saying you could do better."
"Oh. Okay."
Melisa bit back a laugh.
[... We, uh, are not the closest group of friends, are we?]
As they finished their meal, Melisa made a decision.
She turned to Armia.
"Hey, Armia," she said, "You still want to work on those spells?"
The darian girl blinked, surprise flitting across her face. She stammered for a moment, looking absolutely lost as to how best to respond without looking too desperate.
But then a slow, pleased smile spread across her lips.
"Yeah," she said, nodding eagerly.
Melisa smiled brightly at her.
"Alright. How about we head to my house later, then? Outside of the academy, I mean. The dorm room is so cramped, I-"
"I'd like that." Armia respectfully cut her off.
Isabella pouted, rolling those green eyes of hers.
But before she could voice her objections, Melisa leaned in and pressed a quick, placating kiss to her lips.
"I'll make it up to you later," she murmured. "I promise."
"I'll hold you to that."
What do you think?
