Reborn as a Succubus: Time To Live My Best Life!

Chapter 76 Assassins and Feelings

{Raven}

Raven sat in class, her eyes unfocused as she stared blankly at the spellsigns scrawled across the chalkboard.

The professor's voice droned on, the words washing over her without leaving any sort of impression.

[Why am I even here, at this point?] She thought, sighing quietly. [I don't care about the academy. The only reason I even signed up was for the mission. Now...]

Almost unconsciously, her gaze drifted towards the back of the room, where Melisa sat hunched over her notebook, her quill scratching furiously across the parchment.

Raven just watched her, eyes half-lidded.

Ever since her mission had been exposed, ever since she'd chosen to save Melisa instead of potentially letting her die, things had, of course, changed.

The rigid structure that had defined her entire life was gone in a blink.

And, now, she felt like she was left adrift at sea.

[No more missions,] she thought, her hands clenching into fists beneath her desk. She tore her eyes away. [No more orders... No more purpose.]

The realization left a hollow ache in her chest.

At least being with the Shadow Mages had given her direction. The nim were a plague on the land. They, and any who supported them, were but names pinned to boards, waiting to be scratched out.

Now, she had nothing but the endless stretch of days ahead, each one as formless and directionless as the last.

As the last class ended and students began filing out, Raven found herself moving on autopilot, her feet carrying her back to the dorm room she shared with Melisa.

The nim girl had some sort of study session with Isabella (which probably meant they'd be swapping spit or something, like Raven had seen before), leaving Raven alone with her thoughts.

Before she even knew it, the night arrived and Raven was still in the room.

She changed into a simple evening gown. Normally, she'd go for a run to keep her mind and body sharp, or she'd go carry out her next assassination. Now, however, all she did was stand there, silent.

Raven stared at her reflection in the mirror, barely recognizing the girl who looked back at her.

[... Who am I now?] she wondered, tracing the scar that ran down her face. The scar that had basically been a badge before. [I'm not a Shadow Mage. I don't particularly care for my studies. What...?]

The sound of the door opening startled her.

Melisa walked in, holding her books and carrying a tired smile.

"Hey, Raven," she said, dumping her study materials on her desk. "How was your day?"

Raven shrugged.

She climbed into her bed, intending to lose herself in sleep, but Melisa's voice stopped her.

"Actually, Raven? Could you come over here for a second?"

[Hm?]

Hesitantly, Raven made her way to Melisa's bed, perching on the edge with her back rigid and her hands folded in her lap.

Melisa's crimson eyes studied her, filled with a warmth that made Raven's chest tighten.

"I..." She paused. "How are you doing, really?" Melisa asked softly.

The gentle concern in Melisa's voice broke something inside Raven.

Before she could stop herself, words began spilling out.

"I'm not doing anything," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I... I don't really know what to do with myself anymore."

Melisa reached out, her hand hovering just above Raven's before apparently thinking better of it and pulling back.

"What do you mean?"

Raven took a shaky breath as she prepared to say things she wasn't really supposed to talk about.

"I never had a family. Never had friends. Never had... anything, really. Just my masters and their instructions. My days consisted of simply doing whatever the organization needed from me.

Now that's gone. I have nothing left."

She looked down at her hands, clenching and unclenching them as if trying to grasp onto something solid.

"I don't really know how to live without orders. Without a mission. I don't know how you people stand it, walking around without being told what to do."

She shook her head.

"I would wake up early to ensure I remained alert throughout the day. I would eat to ensure I would have the energy to chase my targets down. I stepped out of my housing usually just so I could go find them. This..." She tilted her head. "Doing things just for the sake of doing them, like all of you do. This feels strange."

Melisa was quiet for a long moment, digesting Raven's words.

When she spoke, her voice was gentle but firm.

"I'll be honest, I can't quite say I know what you're going through... But, you're not alone, Raven. I know everything is new and scary right now, but, hey, I'm here. I'll be with you every step of the way as you figure things out."

Raven looked up, meeting Melisa's gaze.

"You... you really mean that?"

Melisa nodded, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"Of course I do. We're friends, aren't we?"

The word 'friends' hit Raven like a physical blow.

"I..." She looked back at Melisa. "I guess we are."

Melisa smiled back at her.

... Suddenly, almost against her will, Raven found herself leaning closer.

Melisa's scent enveloped her, a heady mix of flowers and something uniquely... Melisa. She couldn't quite describe it, but she knew that she'd never caught a scent quite like it.

Her eyes dropped to the nim girl's lips.

Soft... Inviting. Raven could almost...

Melisa noticed.

And, Melisa began to move toward her.

At the last second, Raven jerked back, her heart pounding in her chest.

[What am I doing?] Raven thought. [This is... this is wrong. She's a nim. The enemy.]

Melisa blinked, confusion and something else - disappointment? - flashing across her face.

"Raven?" she asked, her voice uncertain.

"I... I should go to bed," Raven mumbled, scrambling off Melisa's bed and practically diving into her own.

She pulled the covers up over her head, her entire body trembling.

As she lay there in the darkness, listening to Melisa's soft breathing from across the room,

Raven's mind whirled with conflicting emotions.

But, above all else, she wondered what Melisa's lips may have felt like if she'd let herself lean in further.

---

{Melisa}

Melisa stirred awake, her body thrumming with an intense, almost painful need.

Raven wasn't there. Melisa groaned, pressing her thighs together as waves of desire washed over her.

[Ohhhh fuck. Oh fuck, oh fuck. What's happening to me?] she thought, her skin feeling feverishly hot.

Something was different today.

Ever since her encounters with Isabella and Armia, something had obviously changed within her, but Melisa thought it was limited to just her pheromones. Her effect on others.

Today, she was different.

She felt like if she walked out into the halls right now, she'd pull the first woman she found into her room and have her way with her.

[Not good.]

But, Melisa couldn't just stay in her room all day, right?

[What time is it?] She shook her head. [I... Class.]

So, she went to get ready.

She dragged herself out of bed, her legs shaky.

As she dressed for class, every brush of fabric against her sensitive skin sent shivers through her body.

In class, Melisa could barely focus on the lecture.

Her gaze kept drifting to the girls around her. Not just Isabella and Armia, but the strangers too. The curve of a neck here, the swell of a breast there.

[Why's everyone so fucking hot all of a sudden!?]

She bit her lip, trying desperately to rein in her wayward thoughts.

"Melisa? Are you alright?" Armia's concerned voice cut through the haze of desire. The darian girl placed a hand on Melisa's shoulder, and Melisa had to stifle a moan at the contact.

"F-fine," she managed, her voice strained. "Just... not feeling well." She tried to smile.

She fled as soon as class ended, practically running back to her dorm room.

Obviously, she thought of just asking Armia or Isabella to follow her to the nearest bathroom.

But, as she was, she didn't think she'd make it that far if she stayed close to them.

No, she'd probably take her clothes off in the middle of the hallway and put her ass up in the air, praying for literally anyone to give her some relief.

Once she was inside her room, she curled up on her bed, trembling with unfulfilled need.

[Okay... Okay. Mom said I could ease my pain, right? Let's... Holy...]

She started touching herself.@@novelbin@@

It barely helped.

---

As night fell, the door opened.

Raven entered, slipping into her evening gown.

She paused, noticing Melisa's state.

"What's wrong?" Raven asked, approaching cautiously.

Melisa looked up, her crimson eyes dark with desire.

"Raven... Come here," she said thoughtlessly.

Raven paused. Then, she did as Melisa asked.

Without thinking, she reached out, grabbing Raven's wrist and pulling her close.

Their lips met in a quick, but passionate kiss. Raven stiffened for a moment before melting into it.

One, two, ten, twenty seconds later, they stopped.

When they broke apart, both girls were breathless. Melisa's cheeks flushed deep purple as she realized what she'd done.

"I... I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice almost hoarse. "I don't know what-"

Raven touched her lips, her grey eyes wide with wonder.

"Don't be," she murmured, leaning in for another kiss.
