Chapter 20 - 20 20 Rich School
Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Rich, School Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Rich, School Luo Qiao casually asked, “I wonder if Uncle Geng has any coupons, if so, please find some for me, and just deduct it from the ginseng money.”
Geng Ming looked at Luo Qiao and nodded in understanding, “Alright, please have a seat for a moment.”
When Geng Ming came back, he was holding a kraft paper bag containing exactly four hundred yuan, all in Big Unity currency, and another kraft paper bag that held two Big Unity notes along with various coupons.
Luo Qiao briefly looked through them and saw sugar coupons, cloth coupons, soap coupons, and a good variety of industrial coupons. It was a shame there were no meat coupons, but what made Luo Qiao happiest was that there was actually a sewing machine coupon inside.
Geng Ming also thought that the price offered for the ginseng was not as high as in the city, and he happened to have a sewing machine coupon which he no longer needed since he had already bought one for his home, so he decided to give it to Luo Qiao as a gift.
After receiving the money and coupons, Luo Qiao gave Geng Ming a few instructions. Then she went to the front of the shop and sold the several pounds of Bupleurum that she had in her basket. Only then did she say goodbye and leave the Chinese medicine shop.
Thinking about her own home, she decided to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to exchange those coupons for goods.
The supply and marketing cooperative was quite large, with many people inside. Seeing that the counters where she needed to purchase items were crowded with people, she had no choice but to walk towards the back to see if there was anything she needed.
At the very end, she found a simple stove for sale, useful for the winter, and asked about the price, “Comrade, how much is this stove?”
The sales clerk didn’t even lift his eyes, just replied, “Six industrial coupons, six yuan.”
Luo Qiao thought it over and it really wasn’t cheap, but the stove was compact and could use both coal balls and firewood. Considering it might be difficult to buy one in the winter, she decided that encountering it now might as well mean buying it.
She counted out six industrial coupons and six yuan and handed them over. The clerk behind the counter was taken aback, clearly not expecting Luo Qiao to actually make the purchase. After verifying the money and coupons were correct, he lifted the stove over the counter.
No sooner had Luo Qiao bought the stove than she regretted it. How was she going to buy other things while carrying it?
The sales clerk looked up to see the young lady’s face full of regret and realized what she was thinking as she looked at the other counters. He didn’t expect this young lady to be able to produce industrial coupons; appearances really could be deceiving.
So he offered, “How about you leave the stove here with me, and you can pick it up after you’re done shopping.”
Luo Qiao was delighted to hear this. She really hadn’t thought of that and thanked him repeatedly before heading over to the other counters.
Since she had almost used up all her coupons, except for the sewing machine coupon, she bought a thermos, Jiefang shoes and cloth shoes, soap, towels, toothpaste and toothbrush, a time-characteristic enameled washbasin, and a comb.
The comb that the original owner carried with her was almost toothless, not to mention toothpaste which was nonexistent, a toothbrush whose bristles were nearly worn down, and a towel as tattered as a spider web, completely unusable.
So, aside from the little stove, everything she bought today was essential.
When she returned to the counter where she had bought the stove, her hair had been completely disheveled by the crowd. She quickly retied it and thanked the clerk before leaving the supply and marketing cooperative.
She was also wary of encountering people from the village, so she first found a secluded corner to store the little stove in her space, leaving only the shoes and washbasin outside, as the shoes were meant to be worn out anyway.
The washbasin would be necessary for washing clothes by the river in the future, and it was better to show those plainly.
After sorting these items, she headed to the commune’s middle school, wondering how to proceed with her situation.
But upon inquiry, she learned that to attend junior high, one must take the exam along with this year’s elementary school graduates, only then could she attend the middle school, or she would need an elementary school graduation certificate, and the middle school would issue exam papers to determine her grade based on the scores.
Luo Qiao wanted to ask more, but the person had already become somewhat impatient, waving his hand to dismiss her.
What do you think?
