Chapter 24 - 24 24 Dream of Beautiful Things
Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Dream of Beautiful Things Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Dream of Beautiful Things Gao Suhua picked up the dustpan in the courtyard and looked toward her second daughter. “Like I said, if she asks what you’re doing, just say you’re helping her with her private plot.”
Zhao Xiaomei picked up a scoop and filled it halfway with water from the water jar, drank it, put the ladle down with a smile, and ran off.
Zhao Xiaotao, who was sitting in the main room, felt some regret, fearing that if Luo Qiao actually bought something big, it would become Zhao Xiaomei’s dowry. She stood up and walked outside as well.
Luo Qiao returned home, brought in the bupleurum that was drying, and then placed the washbasin, soap, and towel inside the house, along with placing two pairs of new shoes by the kang bedhead.
She had intentionally let the villagers see those things today and had deliberately mentioned that she had gathered medicinal herbs to deliver to the herbal store, lest her daily well-being arouse suspicion.
During this period, her goal was twofold: to recuperate her health and to leave a good impression on the villagers—that she had been honestly working and earning work points.
Now that her body was well-conditioned, although her special ability hadn’t made much progress, managing the backyard and the crops in her private plot was no issue at all.
She could also venture into the mountains when she was free. While she might not be ready for the deep mountains yet, the inner part should pose no problem, given her skills.
At least her time hadn’t been wasted; self-defense would not be an issue in the future.
After cleaning the shepherd’s purse she had dug up that morning, she cracked all the wild chicken eggs into a basin. Then she went into her space to stir-fry the eggs and prepared the filling before leaving the space.
Being an orphan, she figured it was best to be cautious about everything. If she fried eggs outside and someone came looking for trouble, it would be too much of a hassle.
She had mixed white flour with corn flour because she feared Lu Yichen asking where she got the white flour, so she used half and half. Besides, the corn flour from her space was ground finely, which made for a better texture.
She had already prepared the garlic sauce ahead of time to dip the dumplings in later.
Everything was ready, and the dough had rested enough. Just as she was about to start making the dumplings, someone knocked on the front door.
Luo Qiao collected her things and washed her hands before asking, “Who is it?”
Zhao Xiaomei’s voice came from the other side of the door, “It’s me, your second sister.”
Luo Qiao rolled her eyes and thought to herself that the Zhao Family really had no shame. They had just signed an agreement, and now they were endlessly harassing her at her doorstep.
It seemed she would have to teach them a lesson; they really took her for a pushover.
Luo Qiao opened the door but did not let her in, asking, “What is it, Zhao Family Second Sister?”
Zhao Xiaomei peered through the gap in the door but couldn’t see anything. “I came to ask if your private plot needs tidying?”
Luo Qiao replied, “Do you even know where my private plot is located?”
Zhao Xiaomei didn’t catch on immediately, “Of course, I know.”
Luo Qiao suddenly laughed, “Then didn’t you see it on your way over? I’ve already taken care of everything. That’s a rather far-fetched excuse.”
Zhao Xiaomei, preoccupied with how to fool Luo Qiao, hadn’t paid much attention to whether the plot was tidy on her way over.
She hesitated, her face changing slightly, but still managed to say brazenly, “I was so focused on getting here that I didn’t notice. Let’s talk inside, standing here is quite tiring.”
Luo Qiao knew exactly why she had come, and seeing a figure moving on the hillside, she quickly devised a plan.
So she stepped back to let her into the yard. If the Zhao Family needed a lesson, they had sought her out, so they could not blame her for the humiliation they might face.
Once inside the courtyard, Zhao Xiaomei quickly scanned around for what she wanted, then attempted to head into the house.
Luo Qiao spoke up, “If there’s something you want to talk about, let’s discuss it here in the courtyard. I still need to go out and dig up wild vegetables soon.”
Turning her head, Zhao Xiaomei addressed Luo Qiao, “I heard you went to the commune today?”
What do you think?
