Chapter 107: 108: Successful Blood Transfusion

Chapter 107: Chapter 108: Successful Blood Transfusion

Master Yan couldn’t help the twitching at the corners of his mouth, upon hearing the teasing; he really was a petty man who delighted in others’ misfortune.

Shao He saw that the breath of the man on the sickbed was getting weaker and weaker, and said with a solemn face, “Saving one life is more meritorious than building a seven-story pagoda, Master Yan surely wouldn’t stand by and watch someone die, would he?”

“Exactly, is Master Yan scared?” Pei Huaian seized the opportunity to provoke him deliberately.

Yan Ze, looking at the pair who were egging each other on, could only brace himself and walk forward. He extended his arm and closed his eyes, the intense pain coming in waves; he could even feel his own blood draining away, his body gradually getting colder.

Just as he felt he was going to faint, a gentle voice came to his ears, “That’s enough, Master Yan.”

Yan Ze opened his eyes, his body swaying as he barely steadied himself. Shao He helped him sit down to the side, turned around, and transfused his blood to the person on the bed. After a round of blood transfusion treatment, the man’s condition slightly improved, his complexion no longer ashen, breathing gradually stabilizing.

...

Yan Ze saw the various stitches on the man’s body and said to Pei Huaian beside him, “I didn’t expect Doctor Shao to be not only superb in medical skills but also so adept at needlework.”

“Indeed not bad,” Pei Huaian nodded in agreement, such skill in needlework was rare indeed.

If the man in the bed had heard their conversation, he probably would have coughed up blood in anger. There he was, lying on the brink of death, and these two were admiring how well his stitches were done.

Pei Huaian asked again, puzzled, “Why didn’t my blood type match his just now?”

“Each person has a different blood type. Some people have the same blood type, others do not. Different blood types cannot be mixed together; it would cause rejection, which is why you couldn’t donate blood,” Shao He explained earnestly.

With that explanation, they understood—it was like how two different things couldn’t be placed together.

Yun Qian quickly found several people, and after testing and matching, two were suitable. After the transfusion, they were given silver and told to leave.

The man’s life was saved, and Shao He heaved a sigh of relief. She opened the door to let the woman come in and informed her that the man was out of danger.

“Thank you, Doctor, thank you for saving my son,” the woman said excitedly, her gratitude evident beyond words.

Shao He gave a slight smile and waved her hand, “You’re welcome, but how did he get injured so severely?”

Zhao Xiu wiped her tears, looked up at Shao He, and spoke slowly, “My name is Zhao Xiu, and he is my son, Zhao Yuebei. We were bullied by a group of people after entering the city. My son was only trying to protect me when those people beat him up like this.”

Shao He’s brows furrowed slightly, her heart filled with compassion and anger. After a moment of silence, she gently patted Zhao Xiu’s shoulder, comforting her, “Your son is alright now. Proper rest will heal him. He needs to be careful with his diet, keep his wound dry, and not move carelessly to avoid tearing the stitches.”

“Thank you, Doctor.”

After expressing her sincere thanks, Zhao Xiu approached Zhao Yuebei’s bedside and gently stroked his forehead.

Pei Huaian narrowed his eyes slightly, seated in his wheelchair, taking in Zhao Xiu’s appearance. Her face was egg-shaped with almond eyes, and her features were defined and three-dimensional. Although not stunning, she was wholesome and pleasant to look at.

Pei Huaian’s gaze lowered, a flicker of indiscernible expression crossing the depths of his eyes.

As Shao He turned around, she caught Pei Huaian appraising Zhao Xiu discreetly, but she quickly dismissed the thought, suspecting she might have seen it wrong.

Yan Ze noticed Pei Huaian’s absent-mindedness and asked indifferently, “What are you worried about?”

Pei Huaian retracted his gaze and said somberly, “Nothing. Master Yan, you should take good care of yourself. If you’re feeling strong, you might even be able to donate more blood.”

“Not strong, not at all strong, I’m very weak right now,” Yan Ze immediately feigned frailty.

Seeing his insincere act, Pei Huaian rolled his eyes.

Shao He approached them and asked seriously, “Did you come to Anji Hall because you were feeling unwell?”

Pei Huaian said gravely, “Imperial Physician Lu handed the prescription over to the Imperial Medical Bureau, causing many nobles in the palace to be affected, with hands so swollen they dare not show them. Lately, everyone’s been afraid to show their hands.”

The matter had caused an uproar in the palace, and many nobles didn’t dare to go out as a result. The imperial physicians were at their wits’ end and had to ask the Emperor to investigate.

When the Emperor heard about it, he was furious, ordering a thorough investigation, but so far, there had been no leads.

“Are you here to ask for a solution?” Shao He deliberately added an extra ingredient to the prescription that would cause people’s hands to swell unbearably, impossible to reduce, yet it would not harm the body.

This was also why she had told Yun Qian not to worry, as she had foreseen such a situation after obtaining the frostbite ointment and Cold Effervescent Powder the last time.

“I’m not here for a solution; I’m here to remind you that Imperial Physician Lu has been arrested. I’m worried he’ll lash out in desperation,” Pei Huaian was concerned that if the situation escalated, it could entangle Shao He, given the magnitude of the affair.

“It’s time he tasted what it’s like to be in prison.” Shao He was always vengeful, or else she wouldn’t have given the tampered prescription to Imperial Physician Lu.

Pei Huaian knew her character well, but often, matters were more complicated than she imagined.

“Imperial Physician Lu once claimed that the prescription from Anji Hall was stolen from him. It won’t be long before they trace it back to you. You should be extra cautious, lest you give someone a handle to use against you.”

Pei Huaian was concerned someone might take advantage of the situation to kick her when she’s down, which would be a bit dangerous for Shao He. After all, she was now in the limelight, having obstructed many people’s sources of income, and these individuals would gladly use the opportunity to take her down.
