Chapter 128: 129: Pei Huaian Gets Poisoned
Chapter 128: Chapter 129: Pei Huaian Gets Poisoned
Nightfall descended gently, and the pale moonlight cast upon the cobblestone path, forming tranquil scenes like those in a painting.
Shao He, dressed lightly, stepped briskly towards Xiao Linzhang’s room, asking with concern about the child’s day.
The nanny spoke with a smile about Xiao Linzhang’s day, while Qing Shan brought over a pot of hot tea, handed a cup to her, and asked with concern as she looked at the master’s fatigued complexion, “Miss seems to not be in the best of spirits today; are you feeling unwell?”
“It’s nothing, probably just over-tired,” Shao He took the teacup, sipped lightly on the hot tea, and the rich aroma of the tea spread in her mouth, as if capable of taking all her fatigue and irritability away.
At that moment, she approached the bed, gazed through the window, and saw the view outside.
The moon was obscured by dark clouds, gusts of wind shook the large trees violently outside, a bolt of lightning illuminated the pitch-black night sky, and suddenly with flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder, heavy rain poured down.
“This weather is really strange; though it is early spring, it feels as cold and piercing as winter,” Qing Shan put a cloak around her and said with concern.
Without answering Qing Shan, Shao He closed the window and said to the three behind her, “Close all the windows tonight. I will stay here to watch over Xiao Linzhang; you all go down and rest.”
The nanny nodded gently, looking at the child sleeping peacefully on the bed with a tender and loving expression, “Alright.”
As Qing Shan stepped out of the room, her brow furrowed in concern, “Miss seems to be in a mood tonight, did something happen?”
Qingxia turned to look back at the room, and after moving a good distance away, whispered to Qing Shan, “I suspect it has to do with Young Master Pei.”
“What happened with Young Master Pei?” Qing Shan asked, puzzled.
Qingxia briefly recounted the incident of Pei Huaian being injured and calling her to fetch Miss, then casually said with a laugh, “I think Miss and Young Master Pei have…”
“Shut your mouth! Such matters are not for us servants to discuss. If I ever hear you speak so again, I will punish you,” Qing Shan warned sternly.
Qingxia closed her mouth in aggrievement, muttering, “Can’t even talk about it, stingy.”
With a raise of her hand, Qingxia immediately made a shushing gesture, and as she saw the person turning to leave, she made a face behind his back.
The candle within the room was extinguished, and only the soft sound of breathing could be heard in the darkness.
In the middle of the night, the torrential rain outside gradually stopped, and the howling wind also calmed down.
A series of urgent knocks echoed, and Qingxia, who was on guard duty tonight and dozing off, was startled awake by the noise, straightened her clothes, and went to answer the door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me, Ah Mo.”
Qingxia opened the door and seeing Ah Mo drenched, frowned and asked, “What’s the matter at this late hour?”
“Where’s Doctor Shao, quickly call for Doctor Shao,” Ah Mo said anxiously, supporting himself on the doorway.
Qingxia, not knowing what had happened, helped him into the estate, “What’s going on? My Miss has already gone to bed.”
“My master has suffered serious injuries, and we hope Doctor Shao can come to treat him. Please convey my request,” Ah Mo pleaded, gripping her wrist in urgency.
“Alright, wait here.”
Qingxia helped him to sit down then went to Shao He’s door, ready to knock.
Suddenly, the door swung open from the inside, and Shao He, seeing Qingxia, asked, “What’s happened?”
“It’s Ah Mo. He says Young Master Pei has been seriously injured and hopes the Miss can…”
Before Qingxia could finish, Shao He had already walked past her towards the door, approaching Ah Mo.
“What happened?”
“The master has been poisoned severely; I beg Doctor Shao to accompany me back to treat my master,” Ah Mo replied eagerly.
Upon hearing this, Shao He immediately turned and walked outside the estate. Pei Huaian’s identity was special; since he had not sought an Imperial Physician, it was certainly because he didn’t want the palace insiders to know.
Qingxia wanted to follow but was stopped by Qing Shan, who had come out and said firmly, “You better stay here, don’t add to the trouble.”
Qingxia stamped her foot, watching the two disappear, and growled in frustration, “How did I add trouble?”
“Miss has important matters to attend to; go wake the nanny to watch over the young master,” Qing Shan said, ignoring the huffing person, and turned to head to the young master’s room.
As the person’s silhouette vanished, Qingxia could only turn reluctantly to wake the nanny.
Ah Mo lifted the carriage curtain, watching Shao He get inside the coach, which then set off toward the east of the city.
Shao He sat inside the carriage, lifting the curtain to gaze out the window, lost in thought.
Why had Pei Huaian sustained such severe injuries? Hadn’t he left because he had matters to attend to today? How did it come to this?
What had happened? How severe was Pei Huaian’s injury?
At this thought, she couldn’t help but worry. Perhaps she hadn’t even realized that her concern for Pei Huaian had exceeded that of a doctor for a patient.
In the time it took to drink a cup of tea, the carriage pulled up in front of an estate in the eastern part of the city.
Ah Mo lifted the carriage curtain, “Doctor Shao, we’ve arrived.”
Shao He alighted from the carriage and saw a wide plaque with the words “Fifth Prince’s Mansion” inscribed upon it.
“Your master…”
“The master had no intention of concealing his identity. Please forgive Doctor Shao for any offense,” Ah Mo, unaware that Pei Huaian had already revealed his identity to Shao He, explained immediately upon seeing her surprised expression.
Fearing she would be upset and refuse to treat the master.
“Mm,” Shao He responded softly, following Ah Mo into the mansion.
What do you think?
