Shao He had thought that these rumors and slanders would soon be suppressed, but, unexpectedly, the situation only worsened.

Just as she was considering whether to seek out Pei Huaian and discuss the matter with him, Madam Sun suddenly appeared at her doorstep.

This was the first time she had seen Madam Sun since the incident, who looked haggard and disheveled, her appearance extremely wretched.

As soon as Madam Sun entered the door, she rushed to Shao He and shouted fiercely, “It was you who destroyed my child and my husband, and had him imprisoned!”

“Madam Sun, please calm down,” Shao He said, looking at her distressed state.

“How can I calm down?” Madam Sun cried, tears streaming down her face, pointing at her belly, “It was so hard for me to get pregnant, and now I have become disabled… all because of you, all because of you…”

“This has nothing to do with me, your child had defects from the beginning,” Shao He frowned and said.

Upon hearing this, Madam Sun became furious and roared, “How is that possible? It’s clearly your fault that my child has no hands, and you imprisoned my husband and made us pay such heavy compensation. You are a malicious woman!”

“I advise you to go back and rest properly for your confinement, take care of your health,” Shao He said, shaking her head with a sigh at the sight of such a crazed person.

Madam Sun glared furiously and demanded resentfully, “What? Do you expect me to stay as calm and collected as you?”

Madam Sun pressed aggressively, as if convinced that her current plight was all because of Shao He.

Realizing her explanations were too weak, Shao He directly asked, “Did you know what choice Sun Shaoyuan made between your child’s hand and the money?”

Before Madam Sun could respond, Shao He continued, “He chose the silver. He never cared about the child you bore, nor did he care about your lives!”

At this revelation, Madam Sun was suddenly stunned. She looked at her incredulously and exclaimed, “You’re talking nonsense. That’s impossible!”

“Impossible? Don’t you know?” Shao He patiently countered.

Madam Sun stared furiously at her for a moment, then suddenly sat on the ground, weeping bitterly, repeatedly crying out, “This woman is a heartless Doctor, she killed my child and had my husband imprisoned. Everyone, come and see!”

Shao He tightened her eyes, feeling utterly helpless at her unreasonable behavior.

The surrounding people, who were already aware of the full story, condemned her shameless actions one after another.

“What a shameless couple. The Doctor kindly diagnosed her, pointed out the problem, and yet they don’t believe it and even falsely accuse the Doctor.”

“Indeed, encountering such people is truly bad luck.”

“Exactly, a few days ago her husband smashed the doctor’s clinic and was just arrested, and now she is creating a scene again.”

Hearing that none of the bystanders supported her, Madam Sun grew furious and cursed at the people behind her, “You know nothing! You have all been deceived by her; she is a fraud, a fraud!”

At last, Shao He had no choice but to ask Yun Qian to call a constable to take her away.

Madam Sun naturally refused to leave, and two constables had to carry her away forcefully.

Not long after Madam Sun was taken away, Pei Huaian hurried over, “I heard that Madam Sun was causing trouble, are you alright?”

“I’m fine, she wouldn’t dare do much to me,” Shao He replied.

She has never been one to suffer losses; if someone else started a fight, they shouldn’t blame her for not being polite.

“I’m glad to hear that. Since my leg healed, there have been more governmental duties, so I have had less time to visit you,” Pei Huaian explained with a smile.

If he had known that his leg would bring so much work after it healed, he would have wished to spend a few more days in a wheelchair, just to be able to spend more time with Shao He.

Shao He was unfazed by his absence and was instead pondering another issue. She inquired, “Regarding the recent rumors in the Capital City, what do you plan to do?”

Shao He had thought he would exert pressure; however, the reality was the opposite, rather fueling the rumors further.

“Why deal with them? I rather think those rumors are not wrong. I indeed have such intentions. I wonder if Doctor Shao would give me a chance,” he said.

Pei Huaian did not conceal the deep emotions within his heart and looked at her with sincere eyes, not hiding his true feelings any longer.

Faced with his sudden confession, Shao He was momentarily stunned, unsure how to react.

Zhao Yuebei happened to walk by; he was unaware of the atmosphere between the two and said, “Doctor Shao, my mother is ill today, so I may have to go back to take care of her.”

He usually stayed at the store and occasionally went back to see his mother; today’s event was sudden.

“Sure, go back and take good care of your mother,” Shao He said.

She took out several pieces of silver from her robe and placed them in his hand, “Take this silver and buy some nourishing items for your mother to help her recover during this period. If you need, you may take some time off.”

“Thank you, Doctor Shao,” Zhao Yuebei said and turned to leave.

Pei Huaian’s gaze followed him, watching as the man departed with lowered eyes.
