Chapter 237 - 237 238 It Turns Out the Maid Was Up to No
Chapter 237: Chapter 238: It Turns Out the Maid Was Up to No Good Chapter 237: Chapter 238: It Turns Out the Maid Was Up to No Good Jhiang Yijia saw Zi Ning kneeling before her and, after a moment of thought, ultimately chose to trust Shao He, saying, “What exactly have you done?”
“I really didn’t do anything,” Zi Ning cried incessantly on the ground, pleading her innocence.
Jhiang Yijia did not believe her and instead sent her personal maid to invite Fang Jue back to the manor. She had to clear this matter up today.
“You say you have done nothing, so why does the child feel so close to you? Ever since you came to Miss Jhiang’s side, the child hasn’t let her hold him anymore.”
These words suddenly made Jhiang Yijia realize; indeed, although she hadn’t held the child much before, he hadn’t been constantly crying and fussing as soon as she approached. Everything started after Zi Ning arrived.
“No, it wasn’t me,” a panicked look flashed across Zi Ning’s eyes.
Shao He opened the child’s small blanket and after a thorough inspection, she finally found something abnormal.
She saw several tiny needle marks in the inconspicuous areas of the child’s ankles and armpits, making her gasp in shock.
“You wicked maid.”
Shao He never expected a little maid to be so bold and commit such a heinous act.
“What do you mean by that, Doctor Shao? Are you accusing me without proof?” Zi Ning vehemently claimed to have done nothing, even casting a hostile glance at Shao He.
Facing such stubborn resistance, Shao He walked over to her and said bluntly, “Don’t think your little tricks have gone unnoticed, they’re nothing but childish games.”
Feigning ignorance, Zi Ning asked, “What are you talking about, Doctor Shao? I don’t understand a single word.”
Seeing Zi Ning still playacting, the corner of Shao He’s mouth curled into a cold smile.
“You know Miss Jhiang has a habit of using incense to fragrance her clothes, exposing the child to the same kind of incense every day,” Shao He explained.
“Every time the child smells this incense, you strike or pinch her. After dozens of repetitions, the child naturally becomes highly sensitive to the scent and exhibits constant crying and fussing.”
Zi Ning’s eyes widened in disbelief, not expecting her foolproof strategy to be seen through.
“You, you have some nerve!” Jhiang Yijia thought of how she had even blamed the child for not being close to her and felt a surge of guilt.
Before Zi Ning could attempt to defend herself further, Shao He squatted down in front of her and found the silver needle hidden in her sleeve, revealing the truth.
Jhiang Yijia watched in shock as the silver needle was retrieved, her heart pounding erratically at the thought of how such a seemingly honest maid could be so cunning.
A crisp slap echoed.
Zi Ning’s face quickly sported a red, swollen imprint of a hand, and blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
“I have always treated you well, yet you have harmed my child in secret!” Jhiang Yijia shouted furiously, wishing she could kill Zi Ning to satisfy her anger.
“I was wrong, Mistress, I really know I was wrong,” Zi Ning cried, covering her face, tears streaming down.
“Shut up.” Jhiang Yijia frowned in disgust.
Zi Ning saw the Mistress’s ferocity for the first time and was immediately too frightened to speak again.
“Someone, take her away,” Jhiang Yijia felt that she had been too easy to bully in the past, which let people take advantage of her. Now, even her child had been dragged into suffering alongside her.
She couldn’t just sit idle anymore. She had to strike back forcefully to show everyone that Jhiang Yijia wasn’t so easily bullied.
“Madam, I can explain. Please listen to me, Madam, I’m really wronged,” Zi Ning shouted in desperation, but no one paid any attention.
With no other choice, she began to speak, “Madam, actually, all this is because Lady Fang…”
But before she could finish her sentence, an embroidered handkerchief was stuffed into her mouth, “Still spouting nonsense here? Hurry up and drag her back to the manor to be dealt with by Fang Jue.”
Jhiang Yijia was obviously aware of what she wanted to say—it was all Master Fang’s doing, and she had nothing to do with it.
So Zi Ning was dragged away until her figure had completely vanished from the room, and only then did Jhiang Yijia speak, “Is there a way to make the child no longer afraid of me?”
“The only way is to change the incense. The child hasn’t been exposed to the scent for long; there’s still time to change it,” Shao He said calmly.
Jhiang Yijia finally breathed a sigh of relief, and after pondering for a moment, Shao He said, “I feel that Lady Fang is very determined to have a son. If she fails this time, she will surely find other ways.”
“I have always been aware of my mother-in-law’s thoughts and attitude, but I never expected her to resort to such despicable means,” Jhiang Yijia said with anger in her heart.
The outrageous things her mother-in-law did in the past were already over the top, but as a junior, she didn’t make too much of a fuss. She didn’t expect her mother-in-law to overstep and harm the child.
She knew her mother-in-law wanted to take the child away from her so that it would be easier to have another son.
“It’s good you’re aware, just be careful,” Shao He warned.
“Thank you, Doctor Shao, I must take my leave now,” Jhiang Yijia said, wanting only to go back and get everything cleared up rather than continue to endure any more.
Shao He escorted her to the door and watched her get on the carriage before turning back to the hall.
What do you think?
