Chapter 45: Chapter 46 What Are You Planning to Do?
Yun Qian looked at Shao He, “What do you plan to do?”
“We’ll talk about it tomorrow, you go rest first.” Shao He took the sleeping child, her expression weary.
Yun Qian nodded with a smile and turned to walk toward the room.
At that moment, Shao He, with no desire to sleep, placed the child on the bed and started to tidy up the cluttered front hall.
Half a quarter of an hour passed, and just as Shao He was about to get up and return, there came another flurry of panicked knocking at the door.
She cautiously approached the door and called out, “Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Hearing the familiar voice, Shao He quickly opened the door and saw the man in the wheelchair with a mask. His chest was still heaving, indicating he had come in haste from some prior engagement.
“What’s wrong? Is it your leg acting up again, or is there something else?” Shao He deliberately probed.
“I’m feeling a bit unwell, where’s Xiao Linzhang?” Pei Huaian replied evasively.
Shao He opened the door to let him in and led him to the backyard, her gaze flickering, “Tonight, a group of injured gangsters came to kill Xiao Linzhang. Someone took care of them, someone with formidable martial arts, clean and efficient moves—the gangsters died by a single stroke. Who do you think it was?”
Pei Huaian perceived the probing in her words. He neither denied nor admitted anything, remaining silent.
Seeing his calm countenance, Shao He knew he meant no harm and did not pursue the matter any further. @@novelbin@@
Yet such incidents never come singly but in battalions, so it was best to be prepared. Xiao Linzhang might not always be so fortunate to be saved by others.
“I’m thinking of hiring a maid skilled in martial arts to protect the child—that should be safer.”
Shao He calculated in her mind; the silver she had on hand should be enough.
Pei Huaian heard this and greatly agreed, taking the matter into his own hands, “Why don’t you let me handle this? I’ll ensure we choose someone reliable who won’t make any mistakes.”
“Thank you very much.” Shao He agreed immediately, feeling extremely grateful.
Seeing Xiao Linzhang safe and sound, Pei Huaian then took his leave.
In the pitch-dark room, drowsiness finally overcame Shao He, and she lay down on the bed and fell into a deep sleep.
Warm sunlight filtered through the gaps in the window lattice, shining onto the bedside.
The child on the bed slowly opened his eyes, his eyeballs wobbled around a few times, then he grabbed his little hand into a fist and stuffed it into his mouth, drool continuously trickling down the corners of his mouth.
Shao He was awakened by the child’s cries, seeing the wailing child and then glancing outside at the sun, she knew he must be hungry.
Just as she was about to get up and heat some cow’s milk, she pushed open the door and saw Yun Qian already waiting outside.
“You’re awake, I’ve had Aunt Liu heat the milk already, and I’ll feed it to Xiao Linzhang.” Yun Qian didn’t dare enter the room or knock on the door, simply waiting outside all this while.
Shao He felt immensely grateful and thought of finding a maid to care for the child sooner, so as not to always trouble Yun Qian.
Watching Xiao Linzhang finish his milk, Shao He busied herself studying how to prepare a treatment for the common cold effervescent powder.
She started by selecting and weighing out medicinal ingredients like honeysuckle, fritillaria, mint, licorice, and dried tangerine peel, followed by cleaning, drying, grinding them into powder, and finally, mixing the different powders together.
Though the process seemed simple, it was actually difficult and time-consuming.
…
“Useless, all of you are utterly useless!” Luo Jiner slammed her teacup violently to the ground.
The teacup shattered instantly.
Tea leaves and fragments of the cup scattered all over the floor, even staining her clothes with tea.
Thinking of her exposed plan, possibly revealing herself, she couldn’t help feeling irritated.
The attitudes of Old Madam Chu and Chu Yu towards her worsened her discomfort, and she realized it was not a good time to take action.
“Miss Luo, Miss Liang is here,” Qiu Zhu reported from outside the door.
Luo Jiner felt a surge of aversion upon hearing of Liang Weishuang’s visit, annoyed by the woman’s frequent troubles because of her interest in the Marquis.
But now that Liang Weishuang had arrived, a sly pleasure arose in her—she immediately thought of using her as a pawn.
Luo Jiner’s expression softened, and she instructed Qiu Zhu as she stepped out, “Go tidy up the room.”
“Yes,” Qiu Zhu responded and went into the room.
Luo Jiner fixed her makeup and walked towards the outside of the courtyard.
On the other hand, upon learning that even Imperial Doctor He couldn’t cure Luo Jiner’s infertility, Old Madam Chu felt neither worry nor happiness but became suspicious of her frequent visits to Anji Hall.
What do you think?
