Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Stupefied to the Point of Recklessness

Hearing He Zhenzhen’s words, Old Lady Zhou frowned.

“Enough, focus on your work and cut the chatter.”

He Zhenzhen, unconcerned, laughed mockingly, “Yes, after all, we still have work to do, while some people are sent back home, only to be useless freeloaders.”

Yue Xiaofang glared at her, “Who are you calling useless?”

“Whoever is useless knows it themselves. Not only giving birth to a child that caused a loss but also getting that child killed, if such a person isn’t useless, then who is?”

She pinpointed Yue Xiaofang’s soft nature, repeatedly calling her useless, her words spewing out like a machine gun.

...

However, she did not expect Yue Xiaofang to rush over and slap her hard across the face.

The crisp sound echoed in the courtyard, and He Zhenzhen covered her face, her eyes wide with shock.

She never imagined that Yue Xiaofang could have such a moment of strength.

The extreme surprise even made her forget to fight back immediately.

Yue Xiaofang said slowly and clearly, “If I hear one more word about my daughter, I’ll come to your door with a kitchen knife tonight.”

“I’m just a worthless life anyway, we might as well die together.”

He Zhenzhen looked into Yue Xiaofang’s eyes and realized that she was not bluffing.

She was supposed to grab Yue Xiaofang’s hair and pin her to the ground for a good beating.

But He Zhenzhen was afraid.

In this world, the tough fear the stubborn, and the stubborn fear those who have nothing to lose.

Yue Xiaofang dared to risk everything, but He Zhenzhen did not have that courage.

“I…I still have work to do, I can’t be bothered with you,” He Zhenzhen bit her lip and forced out a face-saving remark before sitting down.

Yue Xiaofang walked out of the courtyard with her head held high and her chest puffed out.

Yue Qingqing couldn’t help but feel awed that, after going through so much, her aunt finally learned to stand up for herself.

It was only then that some semblance of Lin Chunju’s shadow could be seen in her.

But this courage disappeared once Yue Xiaofang returned home, as she quietly went to her room and wept bitterly.

Although Yue Xiaofang always declined the idea of being a seamstress, feeling embarrassed, deep down she also hoped to earn some money with her own hands.

But these hopes were crushed by the rumors and gossip of others, and she ultimately could only become what He Zhenzhen called a freeloader living off her natal family.

Unbeknownst to her, back at the workplace, after Yue Xiaofang left, Old Lady Zhou straightened her expression and got off the rocking chair.

She walked straight up to He Zhenzhen.

“That’s enough. Calculate how much you’ve done and I’ll settle the money with you.”

He Zhenzhen panicked, was this not a euphemism for getting her out of here?

What…what did she do wrong?

Thinking to herself, she argued with a sense of injustice, “It was Yue Xiaofang who hit me just now, I didn’t lay a hand on her.”

“I don’t care. Whoever starts trouble in my place has to leave.”

He Zhenzhen still wanted to argue, but the others around began to urge her.

“Just leave it, go back for today, and Old Lady Zhou will call you next time there’s work.”

“Don’t stand here, you’re holding up our work.”

Seething with anger, He Zhenzhen could only carry her basket to be weighed and left with her meager earnings.

In the evening, the Yue Family gathered together for dinner.

Yue Jiannan asked enthusiastically, “Sister, what did Old Lady Zhou say to you? With your skills, I bet people will be knocking on our door tomorrow.”

Yue Xiaofang managed a forced smile and responded, “That’s still an uncertain thing.”

Yue Jiannan wanted to ask more, but Lin Chunju stretched out her arm to knock him on the head.

“Shut your mouth and eat your food quietly,” she instructed.

Yue Jiannan shrank his head and muttered quietly, “How can I eat with my mouth shut.”

This earned him another eye roll from Lin Chunju.

Zhang Ying and Wang Xiaoni exchanged a silent glance, both guessing that things probably didn’t go well today.

Sigh, it was plain to see, the gossip outside was too vile; Xiaofang’s temperament couldn’t endure it.

Yet, what no one expected was that after dinner, a guest unexpectedly arrived at their home.

Old Lady Zhou came to visit in person.
