“Dad, it’s me, An’an.” It took An Hao a few moments before she could speak after hearing her father’s voice.

“An’an, is something wrong? Don’t worry. I’m about to take your mother to the hospital for surgery.” Hearing his daughter’s voice, An Ruge thought she was calling to urge them to hurry to the hospital. So, his initial response was to reassure her.

“Dad, that’s not what I meant. Listen to me, I think you should keep the baby.” An Hao was unsure how to exactly broach the topic with her parents. But after hearing her father’s remarks, she understood that her parents did love her. Otherwise, they would not go as far as aborting the baby because of her opinion. She thought it might still not be too late to stop them. The implication from her father’s words was that they had not gone to the hospital yet.

“Ruge, who is on the phone? Don’t talk for too long. We need to leave for the hospital.” Xiao Xiang’er came out in her coat and saw her husband on the phone. She reminded him of their scheduled surgery appointment. Although they were reluctant to let the baby go, their daughter did not want it, so they decided not to have the child. They knew they owed her a lot, and they wanted to do what would make her happy.

An Ruge stood frozen after hearing An Hao’s words. He didn’t hear his wife. He stood fixed, holding the phone, not saying a word.

“Ruge, what are you thinking about?” Xiao Xiang’er saw her husband standing there, not saying a word, not moving, not knowing who was on the other end of the line.

“Uh, Xiang’er, what were you saying?” An Ruge asked her, coming back to his senses after his wife’s call.

“I said, finish your call quickly. We should go to the hospital soon. Otherwise, the doctor will leave.” Xiao Xiang’er looked at her husband, clueless about what he was thinking.

An Hao heard her parents’ conversation on the other end of the call. Suddenly, tears streamed down her face. She realized that she had been wrong. Although her parents rarely spent time with her, they genuinely loved her. At this moment, An Hao felt sure about her parents’ affection for her.

“An’an, is she okay? What did she say? Give me the phone. Let me talk to her.” When Xiao Xiang’er heard it was her daughter’s call, she went to take the phone from her husband’s hand.

“An’an, it’s your mother. Are you okay?” Xiao Xiang’er didn’t expect her daughter would call. She shared the same thoughts as her husband, assuming their daughter had called to hasten them to the hospital for the procedure.
