Chapter 887 Betrayal in the Blossoms
As soon as she registered the identity of the three cloaked figures, ‘Uchiha Itachi… Uchiha Shinichi… Uchiha Shisui?!' Kurenai's head whirled in alarm.
"The Uchiha Clan has initiated a Coup d'état!"
"The information we obtained was incorrect!"
As the Captain of the Hokage Guard Platoon, Kurenai was well-informed about some of the Uchiha Clan's plans. According to their knowledge, the Uchiha Clan wasn't supposed to take action until the end of the month. However, with the sudden appearance of three of the four most powerful Uchiha Clansmen at Kuroto's house, she realized that their received information was flawed.
Instead of waiting until the end of the month, the Uchiha Clan launched the Coup d'état that very night. Not only that, but they had also sent two Mangekyō Sharingan users as well as the Uchiha Itachi– the son of the Patriarch–to assassinate the Godaime Hokage. Faced with the three of them, even if it was Kuroto, there was no way he could survive.
"Anko… Hayate… Yugao… fire the signal flare!" Kurenai urgently instructed her comrades in the Hokage Guard Platoon.
"Hokage-sama's life is in danger!" The other three members of the platoon also recognized the gravity of the situation and came to the same conclusion as Kurenai. They readied themselves to fire the signal flare, alerting the village to the imminent danger.
Immediately, they adjusted their formation. Anko stepped back, while Hayate and Yugao swiftly moved forward. Utilizing the Body Flicker Jutsu, they launched their attacks.
Simultaneously, Kurenai swiftly weaved hand signs, preparing to cast a Genjutsu on the three Uchihas. The aim was to momentarily distract them, creating an opening for Yugao and Hayate to successfully strike, while Anko fired the signal flare.
Having rehearsed such crisis scenarios beforehand, the four of them cooperated seamlessly. They sprang into action the moment they identified the infiltrators, without needing to exchange a single word. The four of them were well aware that the three Uchihas before them represented the pinnacle of the clan's combat power. With their team's strength, it was impossible to overcome the opposition. Therefore, their only option was to divert the Uchihas' attention with a fierce attack, allowing Anko to send out the signal flare and warn Kuroto inside the house, as well as the entire village. They needed to buy enough time for the Hokage and the village to take appropriate measures.
While weaving hand signs, Kurenai noted the figures of Hayate and Yugao slashing at the enemy with their swords from the left and right, and thought to herself, ‘The timing must be perfect… Even if it's Uchiha Shisui and Uchiha Shinichi… as long as there is a momentary distraction, Yugao and Hayate's attacks will connect…' And that would provide enough time for Anko to fire the signal flare.
As Kurenai's mind filled with various thoughts and her hand signs neared completion, she was abruptly shocked to witness Hayate and Yugao, who were relentlessly attacking Uchiha Shisui and Uchiha Shinichi with their swords, suddenly freeze in their tracks. Their blades were suspended high, their expressions dazed.
"Damn it… How could this happen?!" she panicked.
Kurenai had not anticipated that her teammates would be incapacitated before she could even finish her hand signs.
"It doesn't matter… My Genjutsu should still buy Anko a few precious seconds," she muttered to herself as she invoked her technique, "Demonic Genjutsu: Tree Bind Death!"
Shooo!
The moment Kurenai cast her Genjutsu, a powerful gust of wind swept through the area, accompanied by a myriad of cherry blossom petals dancing in the air. The small courtyard was enveloped in a mesmerizing flurry of petals, plunging everyone within into a dreamlike realm.
In this moment, Kurenai regained her composure and urgently shouted, "Anko, release the signal flare at once!"
However, there was no response from Anko, and the expected sight of the signal flare ascending into the sky never materialized.
Kurenai spun around frantically but found no trace of Anko whatsoever. She scanned her surroundings in a daze, only to realize that the figures of Hayate, Yugao, and even the infiltrating Uchiha trio had vanished without a trace.
Within the entire courtyard, amidst the sea of blossoms, she stood alone, bereft of any companions.
…
While swiftly evading and retreating, Anko kept a vigilant eye on the battlefield. As she reached into the ninja pouch at her waist, her hand brushed against the signal flare allocated specifically to their Hokage Guard Platoon by the village.
Once this signal flare was ignited, the village would immediately enter a state of utmost emergency, foiling the Uchiha clan's surprise attack tonight.
However, as Anko retrieved the signal flare from her shinobi bag, she noticed that Uchiha Itachi's once-black eyes had transformed into a penetrating scarlet. Simultaneously, Hayate and Yugao stood frozen in place, trying their best efforts, but unable to budge the swords gripped tightly in their hands.
"This…!?" Anko felt a surge of panic in her heart.
Suddenly, Kurenai's hushed voice, casting the Genjutsu, echoed in her ears. Just as she began to breathe a sigh of relief, Anko keenly perceived that Kurenai, too, had succumbed to a motionless state after initiating the Genjutsu.
"Genjutsu rebound!?" Anko, a former student of Orochimaru, swiftly realized the situation and hastened her movements.
Drawing out the signal flare, breaking the seal, and raising it high into the air—all of these actions seamlessly flowed within a single second.
Yet, just as she prepared to launch the signal flare clutched in her hand, a figure flashed before her eyes, accompanied by a soothing voice in her ear, "Anko-senpai, please don't be alarmed. We are not your enemies."
"This… Is it Shisui?!"
At the sight of the other party's scarlet eyes, Anko lost control of her body before she could even ascertain their true identity. A single thought flashed through her mind, "Damn it, we didn't even have a chance to fire the signal flare! Kuroto, flee!" Her gaze turned vacant.
At that moment, Uchiha Shinichi's nonchalant voice reverberated through the yard, "Hey, even though they're just for show, they're ridiculously over-the-top. But man… Considering they're protecting the boss, their job must be a breeze… And I bet they're paid handsomely. Wonder if the boss would make room for one more member in the Hokage Guard Platoon."
Shisui interjected, "Enough with the nonsense. Let's proceed inside."
At that moment, Shisui himself was perplexed. Kuroto had informed them that his Hokage Guard Platoon wouldn't be present, yet there they were… He wondered if they had made an error or if he was testing his own Shadow Guard Platoon.
Itachi deactivated his Sharingan, passing by Hayate and Yugao, who stood motionless with raised swords, while Kurenai remained ensnared in her own Genjutsu.
Shinichi pouted, "Geez, you can be such a buzzkill sometimes, Shisui… Learn to relax once in a while," and quickly followed suit.
