Chapter 76 - 76 76 The Dead Woman
Chapter 76: Chapter 76 The Dead Woman Chapter 76: Chapter 76 The Dead Woman Vermilion Bird looked embarrassed and lowered his voice as he spoke to the guard, but Zhan Lan still overheard the conversation.
“Everyone, this is a gift from Lord Supervisor, who insists that you must watch the prisoner closely!”
“Rest assured, Lord Mu!”
The guard was eating roasted chicken and drinking delicious grape wine while praising, “Ah, this grape wine is so sweet and refreshing, we’re really blessed by Lord Mu today!”
“Yes, roasted chicken with wine, the more you drink, the better it tastes!”
Zhan Lan closed her eyes, her mind filled with thoughts of roasted chicken and grape wine. In her lifetime, she had never had a drop of grape wine. Mu Yan was doing this on purpose, to provoke and bully her!
Her stomach protested vehemently!
Unable to bear it any longer, Zhan Lan abruptly stood up and addressed Vermilion Bird, who was just about to leave, “Big brother, please convey a message to Lord Mu for me!”
Vermilion Bird stopped in his tracks and looked at Zhan Lan.
“Are you even human? You only recognize clothes and not people!” Zhan Lan huffed after delivering her message, then promptly lay down on the straw pile and closed her eyes to sleep.
Vermilion Bird’s eyelids twitched—Miss Zhan sure had a sharp tongue!
Back at the camp, Vermilion Bird relayed Zhan Lan’s situation just as she described it in front of Mu Yan.
Mu Yan nodded in satisfaction, “Hmm, well done!”
“Did she curse at me?” Mu Yan stared into Vermilion Bird’s eyes as he asked.
Vermilion Bird hesitated, “Miss Zhan asked me to bring a message to Master, she said: ‘Are you even human? You only recognize clothes and not people!'”
Unexpectedly, after a moment, Mu Yan snickered. Zhan Lan actually dared to question if he was human and even accused him of being blind!
“Interesting, most interesting!” The thought of Zhan Lan’s enraged face amused Mu Yan.
…
Zhan Lan, smelling the aroma of chicken and wine, fell asleep in the hay.
At least this place was under the control of the Zhan Family Army, so she could have some peace and sleep for a while.
Mu Yan, lying on a soft couch inside his tent, found himself unable to sleep. The temperature difference between day and night at the border pass was large, and although summer had already begun, it was still unusually cold.
He remembered Zhan Lan, who was still locked up in the cell. Those insensitive soldiers probably didn’t give her any blankets or quilts!
The thought of Zhan Lan sleeping alone on the cold ground softened Mu Yan’s heart.
So he draped on a thick cloak and as if driven by some demonic force, found himself at the entrance of the prison.
Who would have known that before he could enter, he saw Zhan Hui hurriedly returning from outside and entering before him.
Not too long after, Mu Yan saw Zhan Hui escorting Zhan Lan out.
Several guards were continuously apologizing to Zhan Lan and the person she had brought with her.
Who would have thought that this girl was really from the Zhan Family!
Watching from a hidden spot, Mu Yan observed how Zhan Hui, without any consideration for gender propriety, naturally removed the straw from Zhan Lan’s head and supported her arm, both of them heading towards his own tent.
Mu Yan rubbed his fingers, thinking to himself: The woman has no concern for her own reputation, engaging in such unseemly contact. Is Zhan Hui really that good?
He watched the two of them walk away and suddenly felt a sense of loss. Mu Yan pulled the cloak that he had just opened back over himself and turned to leave.
Although Zhan Lan had just been sleeping on a hay pile, her arms had been suspended by chains and had now gone completely numb.
Her legs had also fallen asleep from maintaining one position.
“Big brother, you can’t blame your subordinates for this. If a spy had really infiltrated, it would have been dangerous,” Zhan Lan spoke in favor of the guards.
They hadn’t harmed her; they were just performing their duties.
“Mhm.” Zhan Hui’s complexion looked better, and he led Zhan Lan into his tent.
It was still dark outside when Zhan Hui had the cook make Zhan Lan a bowl of shredded pork noodles, and also brought out a plate of marinated beef.
After wolfing down a couple of bites of the noodles, Zhan Lan looked at Zhan Hui with earnest eyes.
Without her saying anything, Zhan Hui knew what she was thinking.
He said with a smile, “Little Fourth Sister, rest assured, all the people you brought have places to rest and have been given food.”
Zhan Lan continued to eat her meal, slowing down, and said while eating, “Big Brother, today in the Western Rong camp, I saw their battle plans!”
Zhan Hui was startled by Zhan Lan’s words. His pupils shrunk abruptly with worry and fear, “You actually had the audacity to venture into the enemy’s camp!”
Zhan Lan put down her chopsticks and said with a smile, “Don’t worry, Big Brother, haven’t I returned safely?”
Zhan Hui, extremely annoyed, asked her softly, “Who went with you?”
“They are some of my friends. Rest assured, they are all reliable!” Zhan Lan raised her right hand to assure him.
Zhan Hui let out a sigh, “You and Chu Yin really are too bold. Western Rong’s army could attack at any moment. You’re not afraid of death, you girl!”
“Yeah, that’s why, hurry and bring me the ink and paper!” Zhan Lan said as she wiped her mouth with a napkin.
“What do you need those for?” Zhan Hui was puzzled.
Zhan Lan said urgently, “Hurry, before dawn, I will draw out their battle plans!”
“Draw them out?” Zhan Hui asked dubiously, “Since you’ve seen the battle plans, were you not discovered by them?”
Zhan Lan’s gaze was resolute, “Don’t worry, I used a blinding technique, no one noticed.”
Zhan Hui brought over the paper, ink, brush, and inkstone. Since Zhan Lan hadn’t taken the actual battle plans, if she was to rely solely on her memory, she probably couldn’t recall much.
Let’s just treat it as a reference!
Zhan Lan sat by the candlelight, meticulously drafting the battle plans stroke by stroke.
Zhan Hui sat beside her, grinding the ink while admiring Zhan Lan’s confident demeanor.
An hour later, Zhan Lan had transcribed the images from her mind onto paper.
When she handed over the battle plans to Zhan Hui, he was utterly stunned.
He couldn’t believe that Zhan Lan could draw such a detailed plan just by glancing at it a few times!
Zhan Lan knew too well about Western Rong and the terrains around Fengyu Pass. Holding the battle plans, Zhan Hui was overwhelmed with excitement.
“Lan’er, you are truly amazing!” Zhan Hui exclaimed excitedly.
Zhan Lan waved her hand wearily. In order to remember all this, she had been on tenterhooks the entire time, and now, at last, she could relax.
She looked thoroughly exhausted, her eyelids fighting to stay open, but still she cautioned carefully, “Big Brother, remember this: Besides General Zhan, don’t show the battle plans to anyone else, and let no one else know about this!”
Zhan Hui clearly understood the importance and nodded solemnly, “Little Fourth Sister, be at ease, I will go see Father right away!”
Before long, a menial soldier came in from outside and said, “Young General, the neighboring tent has been tidied up.”
Zhan Hui carefully put away the Western Rong battle plans and said to Zhan Lan, “Let’s go, you sleep in the neighboring tent, and just call for Li for anything.”
Zhan Hui pointed towards the door where the menial soldier was standing.
Zhan Lan nodded and followed the menial soldier to the neighboring tent.
Lying on the comfortable couch in the tent, Zhan Lan thought to herself: The battle at Fengyu Pass is fraught with danger; only by getting good rest can one have the strength to fight Western Rong to the end!
…
Meanwhile, the main force of the Western Rong army was advancing towards Fengyu Pass!
What do you think?
