Chapter 404: Bullying the Weak, Fearing the Strong

"If you're interested, you can participate in the Spellcraft Gathering as well. But with your understanding of thunder techniques, I doubt you'd achieve much," Xing Chang sneered, his tone dripping with contempt and a look that belittled Song Wen's skills.

It was as though he had entirely forgotten how Song Wen had once used thunder techniques to save his life.

Song Wen replied, "I think I'll sit this one out to avoid making a fool of myself."

Xing Chang smirked. "At least you have some self-awareness. So, about teaching me thunder techniques-what's your decision? Don't worry, I won't let you go unrewarded."

As he spoke, Xing Chang tossed a cloth pouch to Song Wen.

"There are a thousand spirit stones here-consider it your payment." Holding the pouch, Song Wen's lips twitched involuntarily.

His apparent cultivation level was at least late Foundation Establishment.

A mere thousand low-grade spirit stones to instruct in thunder techniques?

Since when had thunder techniques become so worthless?

Xing Chang's arrogance had once again redefined Song Wen's understanding of presumptuousness.

If it weren't for his need to acquire the Focused Spirit Stab through Xing Chang, Song Wen would have been tempted to slap him dead on the spot. (TLN: Please do)

Putting away the spirit stones, Song Wen said, "It's my honor to serve Daoist Xing. But I'm curious-why did you choose thunder techniques for the Spellcraft Gathering?"

Xing Chang grinned smugly. "Thunder-talented cultivators are incredibly rare. If I compete with thunder techniques at the Spellcraft Gathering, I'll undoubtedly stand out among the participants and easily achieve a high ranking."

Song Wen nodded in agreement. "Which thunder technique would Daoist Xing like to start with?"

"Of course, with Thunder Palm," Xing Chang replied.

Thunder Palm was the most basic thunder technique, cultivable from the mid-Qi Refinement stage.

"You haven't even trained in Thunder Palm?" Song Wen asked in surprise.

"I haven't," Xing Chang admitted.

"Then how did you determine that your thunder affinity is exceptional?"

"Everyone knows that my father, Xing Gaohan, excels in thunder techniques, and many of my siblings also specialize in thunder techniques. How could my talent be inferior?"

To Song Wen, Xing Chang's self-assurance came across as sheer stupidity.

That such a fool could survive the brutal world of cultivation and even advance to late Foundation Establishment was nothing short of remarkable.

It all boiled down to having a capable father and a powerful family.

"Does Daoist Xing have the incantation for Thunder Palm?" Song Wen asked.

"Of course, I have the incantation. I've called you here just to correct any mistakes in my technique," Xing Chang replied.

"Thunder techniques are immensely powerful and difficult to control. Shall we practice outside the city?" Song Wen suggested.

Xing Chang shook his head repeatedly. "No, I can't leave the city. After my recent close call during training, my mother has forbidden me from going outside."

Song Wen sighed inwardly. This guy was still a mama's boy.

"In that case, let's practice thunder techniques in this courtyard."@@novelbin@@

An hour later...

"Daoist Xing, you're truly a prodigy among men, with an extraordinary natural talent," Song Wen exclaimed, feigning amazement as he watched the lightning flicker in Xing Chang's palm. He showered him with flattery.

Surprisingly, as Xing Chang had claimed, his thunder affinity wasn't bad.

However, it was merely "not bad" and still fell far short compared to Song Wen.

After all, Song Wen's affinity for thunder techniques stemmed from the divine beast Kui Niu's bloodline within the Azure Ox.

TLN: Referring to Kou Chang's contracted beast from chapter 145.

Xing Chang raised his hand, hurling the lightning into the sky.

The bolt shot up, climbing hundreds of feet before suddenly exploding into countless brilliant sparks.

The dazzling display caught the attention of many cultivators within the Listening Wind Pavilion.

Xing Chang was immensely pleased with himself. "They all say thunder talent is rare and cultivating thunder techniques is as hard as scaling the heavens. But to me, it's nothing!"

Just then.

The courtyard door resounded with a knock from outside.

"Dear guest, the Listening Wind Pavilion is a place of peace and refinement. Please refrain from using spells within its premises," a crisp and melodious voice called out from outside the door.

A young maid, about twenty years old with a delicate and lovely appearance, stood quietly outside the courtyard gate.

Xing Chang's expression darkened suddenly, his gaze turning icy.

"How dare a lowly maid like you meddle in my affairs!" he snarled.

He performed a lightning incantation, and in moments, a ball of lightning the size of a bowl

formed in his palm.

With a wave of his hand, Xing Chang flung the lightning outward.

"Boom!"

The lightning struck the wooden gate.

The gate, unable to withstand the thunderous power of a late Foundation Establishment cultivator, shattered instantly into countless sharp fragments that shot outward.

The poor maid, faced with the oncoming shards, had no ability to resist.

All she could do was watch as the sharp wooden splinters pierced through her body, leaving

her riddled with wounds, her blood and flesh flying everywhere.

When the wood splinters settled, the maid's figure was gone without a trace.

Only the scattered remains of flesh on the ground bore witness to the beautiful maid who had

once been there.

"Hmph! That's the fate of anyone who dares interfere with my business!" Xing Chang

declared arrogantly.

The commotion caused by the killing immediately drew the attention of every cultivator in

the Listening Wind Pavilion.

A flash of movement.

A woman, around thirty years old, appeared outside the courtyard.

This woman had a seductive figure, scanty attire, and a captivating air that exuded feminine

allure.

She glanced at the bloodied remains on the ground, her eyes cold as frost, then directed her icy gaze at Xing Chang inside the courtyard.

"Young Master Xing, you've killed a maid of my Listening Wind Pavilion. You owe me an

explanation," she said.

Xing Chang sneered disdainfully. "Bai Man, what are you? You think I owe you an explanation? When I show you respect, you're the manager of the Listening Wind Pavilion;

without it, you're just a lowly harlot who'll sleep with anyone."

Bai Man glared at him furiously.

"Young Master Xing, as the descendant of Xing Clan's patriarch, I, a mere rogue cultivator, dare not provoke you. But the Listening Wind Pavilion belongs to the First Young Master. If he

hears of today's incident, I wonder how he'll react."

In Fang City, there was only one person worthy of the title "First Young Master": Xing Gaohan's legitimate son, Xing Li Ren.

Hearing this, Xing Chang's expression shifted in shock. It was clear he hadn't known that the Listening Wind Pavilion was his elder brother's property.

His demeanor turned flustered and apprehensive.

"The Listening Wind Pavilion belongs to my elder brother?"

Bai Man smirked coldly. "Whether it does or not, Young Master Xing can inquire back at the

Xing Clan."

Xing Chang believed her words almost entirely.

In Fang City, no one would dare falsely use the Xing Clan's name; doing so would be courting

death.

He forced himself to remain composed, trying not to reveal his fear.

"Hmph! It's just a maid who died. Would my elder brother really hold me accountable for

that?"

Though his tone remained firm, his underlying panic was apparent.

Before his words had fully settled, he leaped onto his flying sword and hurriedly left the

Listening Wind Pavilion.

Watching Xing Chang's retreating figure, Song Wen's impression of him deepened.

He bullies the weak but fears the strong!

Turning to Bai Man, Song Wen cupped his hands and said respectfully, "Manager Bai, this

matter has nothing to do with me."

Bai Man nodded slightly without saying much, allowing Song Wen to leave on his flying

sword.

Song Wen thought this matter was over.

To his surprise, the next day, he received another message from Xing Chang inviting him back

to the Listening Wind Pavilion to teach him thunder techniques. "How could Xing Chang be so forgetful? He just lost face at the Listening Wind Pavilion yesterday, yet today he's rushing back. Could it be that he's found a backer and now feels

emboldened?"
