Chapter 39: Part 1 - Ella's Combat Test (POV Ella)

Ella stood at the edge of the arena, her senses heightened, her heart steady. The bustling noise from the adventurers surrounding the open arena filled the air, but all Ella could hear was the sound of her own breathing. The focus in her mind was absolute. She was ready.

Today was her test—her chance to prove herself, not just as a capable elf, but as someone worthy of standing beside Lyra, someone who could fight for what she believed in.

Ella could feel the warmth of the sun on her face as she gazed across the arena, the wide space stretching before her, the earth hardened beneath her boots. The noise from the crowd seemed to fade as her mind sharpened. This was where she would prove herself, not through magic alone, but through her strength, her agility, and the ferocity that lay within her heart.

In front of her stood Trainer Garan, the same trainer who had tested Lyra. He stood confidently, his arms crossed, waiting for Ella to make the first move. Ella’s eyes narrowed. She wasn’t sure if he was testing her skill or simply enjoying the challenge. Either way, she was prepared.

A small smile tugged at the corners of Ella’s lips as she took a deep breath, settling into a battle stance. Her wooden staff rested against her shoulder, but her focus was on the combat that lay ahead. She was no stranger to fighting—she had trained her whole life, honing her skills in the forest, learning to use the elements around her, and refining her agility in the wilds. Her training as an elf had taught her to be quick, graceful, and lethal when necessary.

The match began without ceremony.

Ella’s staff swung forward in an elegant arc as she charged, the wood meeting the air with a soft whistle. Trainer Garan moved like lightning, sidestepping her attack and countering with a swift strike to her midsection. Ella had anticipated the move, however, and ducked under the blow just in time, her body moving with the precision of a dancer. She rolled backward to regain her footing, her staff held tightly in her hands.

“Nice try,” Garan’s voice rumbled, full of approval. “But you’ll need more than agility to land a hit.”

Ella gritted her teeth. She wasn’t here to just land a hit. She was here to win.

As she regained her stance, Ella’s mind raced. Garan was no novice, and his speed, paired with his sharp reflexes, meant she had to think strategically. She could already feel the pulse of energy gathering in her core, the familiar hum of her magic. Ella was an elemental mage, able to harness the raw power of nature, but she had always relied on agility to complement her abilities. Now, however, she knew she would have to show Garan that her powers went beyond simple speed.

She extended her free hand, calling on the air around her. The wind obeyed her, swirling around her like an invisible whirlwind. Her fingers traced an arc in the air, and the wind sharpened, taking the form of razor-thin gusts. Garan’s eyes flickered with interest, but he didn’t flinch. Instead, he raised his sword, preparing to meet whatever attack Ella threw at him.

Ella’s wind magic wasn’t a raw, destructive force like a fireball or an earth-shaking shockwave. It was subtle, focused—designed to cut, slice, and destabilize her opponents. As the winds took shape, she flung them toward Garan, the gusts slicing through the air with deadly precision. The first wave of wind hit him square in the chest, sending him stumbling back, but he quickly regained his balance, his muscles tense.

Ella pressed the attack, her staff moving fluidly as she combined her wind magic with physical strikes. She twirled, a whirlwind of energy and movement, her staff a blur as she deflected Garan’s attempts to strike her. She could hear the grumble of approval from the crowd as they watched her dance around the trainer, her movements swift and sure.

But Ella wasn’t just trying to impress. She was testing Garan’s limits, figuring out his weaknesses. As much as she enjoyed the flow of the battle, she knew that this wasn’t just a show. She needed to land a decisive blow if she wanted to prove her strength. The wind began to pick up speed, and the arena grew quieter, as if sensing the shift in energy.

Garan lunged forward with a speed that made Ella’s heart race. The strike came so quickly that Ella barely had time to react, but she was ready. She used the wind to propel herself backward, narrowly avoiding the swipe of Garan’s sword. She landed gracefully on her feet, her staff glowing faintly with the energy she was channeling into it.

“You’re quick,” Garan said with a smile, wiping the sweat from his brow. “But let’s see how you handle this.”

With a powerful swing, Garan launched himself at her again, this time with the full force of his body behind the attack. Ella’s instincts flared as she raised her staff in defense, using her wind magic to reinforce the strike. She knew this would be a test of her ability to stay on the offensive while keeping her guard intact.

As their weapons clashed, a sharp spark of energy shot out, crackling through the air, and Ella could feel her concentration slipping just for a moment. That was all Garan needed. With a sudden twist of his body, he disarmed Ella, sending her staff flying out of her hands and onto the ground several feet away. The trainer stood over her, his sword pointed at her chest, a respectful but firm expression on his face.

“Well done,” Garan said. “You’ve got the skills. But there’s always room to grow.”

Ella stood up slowly, dusting herself off, her heart still pounding. She had lost this round, but the test wasn’t over. She wasn’t done yet. She would rise to the challenge and show him—show everyone—that she was capable of becoming an adventurer, worthy of standing side by side with Lyra.

“I’m not finished,” Ella said, her voice steady and calm. “I’ll come back stronger.”

Garan nodded, a slight smile crossing his lips. “I have no doubt about that.
