Chapter 79: A Day at the Demihuman Orphanage – Magic for a Worthy Cause

The sun had just risen over the capital, casting its golden rays across the city. Lyra stepped out of The Arcane Forge, ready to tackle the next task of the day. It had been a whirlwind of progress and prosperity since the shop’s grand opening, but today was different. Today, she was heading to the Demihuman Orphanage, a place that was dear to her heart—a place that took in children of all kinds, giving them a chance at a better life, regardless of their background or species.

Lyra had received an order from the orphanage for one of her magical cleaning and security systems, and she couldn’t have been more honored. She had always believed in helping those who couldn’t help themselves, and these children—orphans with nowhere else to turn—were no exception. She knew she could make a difference for them, just as she had for her other customers. It was a day she had been looking forward to.

Arriving at the Orphanage

As Lyra walked through the cobbled streets, the early morning bustle of the capital filled the air. Vendors were already setting up their stalls, calling out to passersby, and children ran through the streets in excited groups, eagerly awaiting the day’s adventures. Lyra admired the energy around her but stayed focused on the task at hand.

The Demihuman Orphanage was located at the edge of the city, a quiet but well-maintained building that stood on the corner of a row of houses. It was a small but welcoming structure with large windows and ivy-covered walls that gave the building a comforting, almost homey appearance. The yard was filled with wildflowers and tended plants, evidence of the care given to the children who lived there.

Lyra stepped up to the front door and knocked gently, a soft smile playing on her lips. She had heard much about this place—about the selfless people who ran it, and the children who had found solace here.

It wasn’t long before the door creaked open, and a woman appeared on the other side. She was a demihuman herself, a slender woman with pointed ears and a warm, welcoming expression. She wore a simple but elegant gown, clearly someone who worked closely with the children.

“Good morning! You must be Lyra Everleaf, correct?” the woman said, her voice gentle but filled with warmth. “Welcome to the orphanage. We’ve been expecting you.”

Lyra smiled and nodded. “Yes, I’m here to set up the magical cleaning and security systems that were ordered. I brought everything we need.”

“Ah, perfect,” the woman said, stepping aside and gesturing for Lyra to come inside. “Please, come in. We are so grateful for your help. We’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about you and your work.”

Inside the Orphanage

Lyra stepped into the orphanage, her eyes immediately drawn to the children running and playing around the room. It wasn’t large, but it was filled with life. The walls were decorated with vibrant paintings, some of which were clearly made by the children themselves, and the floors were covered with soft rugs and cushions. There were several demihuman children, each with their own unique features—some had pointed ears, others had scales or fur, and some appeared to have more human-like characteristics.

The atmosphere was warm and joyful, despite the struggles these children may have faced. Lyra couldn’t help but smile as she looked around at the faces of the children, all of whom seemed to be in high spirits.

A young girl with fox-like ears bounded up to Lyra, her tail flicking excitedly behind her. “Are you here to help us?” the girl asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.

Lyra knelt down to her level and smiled. “Yes, I’m here to make your home a little more comfortable and safe. You don’t have to worry about cleaning up anymore, and the magic will keep you safe, too.”

The fox-eared girl’s face lit up with excitement. “That sounds amazing! Thank you!”

“I’m happy to help,” Lyra said softly. She looked around, noticing that many of the children had gathered around her, intrigued by her presence.

For a moment, she spent some time talking with them, kneeling down to engage with the younger ones, asking them about their favorite activities and their dreams. She spoke with the caretakers as well, learning more about the day-to-day operations of the orphanage and how they managed to care for all the children.

“I’m glad to see that you’re all doing well,” Lyra said after a while. “It must be difficult at times, but you all seem so happy here.”

The woman who had welcomed her earlier smiled warmly. “We do our best. The children here are strong—each one of them has an incredible story, and we try to nurture their talents and make them feel loved. It's not always easy, but we manage.”

Lyra nodded, her heart swelling with admiration. “You’re doing amazing work. I’m honored to help.”

Setting Up the Magic Systems

After speaking with the children and caretakers, Lyra began setting up the security and cleaning systems. She had brought with her the familiar tokens—small, enchanted artifacts that she had created specifically for these installations.

Starting with the cleaning system, Lyra walked over to a wooden chest in the corner of the room, which the children often used to store their toys and clothes. She placed the cleaning token in a small, hidden compartment in the chest, whispering a few words in the ancient tongue to activate the magic.

The room began to hum softly as the magic took effect. A gentle breeze swirled through the space, gathering dust and debris with ease. The room was instantly tidied, and the children, who had been watching in awe, cheered as the dust disappeared before their eyes.

“Wow! It’s like magic!” the young fox-eared girl exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder.

Lyra chuckled softly, enjoying the children’s reactions. “That’s because it is magic,” she said with a wink.

Next, Lyra moved to the security system. She placed the protective token near the main door, activating the magical wards that would keep the orphanage safe. A soft glow surrounded the room for a moment before settling into a steady, reassuring hum. The protective wards would keep unwanted visitors away, alerting the caretakers if anyone tried to enter without permission.

“There we go,” Lyra said, stepping back and admiring her work. “The orphanage is now both clean and safe. You don’t have to worry about things like cleaning up or security anymore.”

A Generous Donation

As she finished her work, Lyra turned to the woman who had been guiding her through the orphanage. “I’d also like to make a donation to the orphanage,” she said, her voice gentle. “I know how important this place is for the children, and I want to help in any way I can.”

The woman looked surprised, her eyes wide with gratitude. “Oh, Lyra, that is so kind of you. But you’ve already done so much—what more could we possibly ask for?”

Lyra smiled. “I’d like to donate 100 gold coins to help cover any additional expenses for the children or improvements to the orphanage.”

The woman’s face lit up, tears welling in her eyes. “That is an incredibly generous gift, Lyra. On behalf of the children, I can’t thank you enough. This will help so many lives here. You’ve done more than we could have hoped for.”

Lyra placed the coins in the woman’s hand and nodded. “I’m just doing what I can. These children deserve a chance at a bright future, and this is the least I can do.”

As the woman accepted the donation, Lyra felt a deep sense of fulfillment. The joy and warmth she felt from helping these children—giving them both safety and a sense of security—was priceless.

Saying Goodbye

As Lyra prepared to leave the orphanage, the children gathered around her, each offering their thanks in their own way. Some waved shyly, others ran up to hug her, and one of the older boys even gave her a small, hand-drawn picture of a smiling sun.

“Thank you for the magic!” the fox-eared girl exclaimed again. “You’re the best!”

Lyra smiled warmly and knelt down to hug the little girl. “You’re very welcome. Stay safe and take care of each other, alright?”

The woman who had greeted her earlier walked over and thanked Lyra once more. “Your kindness will never be forgotten. These children have been given something truly special today, thanks to you.”

With a final wave to the children, Lyra left the orphanage, her heart full. She was doing good work—work that would ripple out to help others—and that thought kept her spirits high.

A Job Well Done

As Lyra made her way back to The Arcane Forge, she felt a sense of peace settle over her. The day had been long, but it had been fulfilling. She had helped make a difference in the lives of children who needed it most, and that alone made the journey worthwhile.

She knew there was much more to be done in the future—more systems to install, more lives to touch—but for today, she was content. She had done something meaningful.

When she returned to the shop, the employees were waiting for her, eager to hear how the installation had gone. Lyra smiled and shared the day’s events with them, feeling grateful for the team she had built.

“Good work, everyone,” she said. “It’s days like today that make everything worth it.”
