Chapter 164 The Abyss Beckons
Liria braced herself and charged into the oncoming storm.
The vortex of black fire surged forward, a seething wall of annihilation that devoured everything in its path. It roared like a living thing, ancient and insatiable, and every instinct in Liria's body screamed at her to flee. But she couldn't—not now, not here.
Her boots pounded against the cracked stone floor, her breath sharp and ragged as she sprinted straight into the abyssal maelstrom. The flames licked at her armor, searing through layers of enchantment and biting into her skin. Pain flared hot and immediate, but she gritted her teeth and pressed on.
[This is insane,] the system hissed. [Even for you.]@@novelbin@@
"Just keep me alive long enough to regret it," she shot back, her voice barely audible over the deafening roar.
The vortex loomed ahead, a swirling mass of shadow and flame, and for a fleeting moment, doubt clawed at her resolve. Then she saw it—the faintest flicker of a gap at the vortex's edge, a sliver of space where the flames momentarily thinned as the spell expanded outward.
There.
Channeling every ounce of remaining strength, Liria pushed herself harder, her legs burning with the effort. She twisted her body at the last possible moment, skimming the very edge of the vortex. The heat was unbearable, blistering against her skin, but she slipped through the gap, narrowly avoiding the heart of the spell.
She stumbled as she landed on the other side, her breaths shallow and uneven. Her body screamed in protest, but she couldn't afford to stop. Not yet.
[Health at 900. You're officially one bad decision away from becoming dungeon décor.]
Liria ignored the system's quip, her eyes locked on the Abyssal Monarch. The monstrous figure stood tall and unyielding, its molten gaze narrowing slightly as it registered her survival.
The Monarch raised its head, its voice a low, rumbling growl that echoed through the chamber. "Futile."
Liria gripped the hilt of her Shadowflare Blade tighter. "Yeah, well… no one ever accused me of being smart."
With a feral grin, she lunged forward, shadowfire crackling along the length of her sword. She slashed at the Monarch's midsection, aiming for the wound she had inflicted earlier. The black flames flared as they connected, searing into the gash, but the Monarch retaliated instantly.
Its massive clawed hand shot out, aiming for her throat. Liria ducked at the last moment, feeling the air shift above her head as the blow narrowly missed. She pivoted on her heel, aiming another strike at its leg, but the Monarch was faster than its size suggested.
It spun, its jagged cloak of mist whipping around, and lashed out with a kick that sent Liria skidding across the chamber floor. She barely had time to register the impact before the Monarch was upon her again, raising its clawed hand high.
"Voidquake," it intoned.
The ground beneath Liria trembled violently, cracks spiderwebbing outward as a pulse of dark energy surged through the floor. She barely managed to roll aside as jagged shards of stone erupted from beneath her, narrowly missing impaling her.
"Seriously?" she coughed, pushing herself upright. "You have that in your arsenal too?"
[What did you expect? A slap fight?]
Before she could respond, the Monarch lunged again, but this time Liria was ready. She activated Void Step, her body flickering out of existence just as the Monarch's claws sliced through the space she had occupied. She reappeared behind it, thrusting her sword toward its back.
The Monarch twisted at the last second, catching the blade with its own claws. Sparks flew as the two locked weapons, their strength colliding in a clash that shook the very air around them.
"You are persistent," the Monarch growled, its crimson eyes glowing brighter.
Liria smirked despite the strain. "And you talk too much."
With a sudden burst of strength, she broke free from the lock, flipping backward to create distance. Her mind raced as she assessed the situation. She couldn't keep up with the Monarch's relentless assaults much longer. She needed an opening—a weakness.
[Here's a thought, genius. Maybe aim for something other than its oversized muscles.]
Liria's eyes flickered to the Monarch's horns. Twisted and jagged, they pulsed faintly with the same molten glow that coursed through its veins.
Worth a shot.
She sprinted forward once more, feinting to the left before darting to the right. The Monarch swiped at her, but she slid beneath its outstretched arm, coming up behind it. With a fierce yell, she leaped onto its back, gripping its shoulders tightly as she raised her sword.
The Monarch roared in fury, twisting and thrashing, but Liria held on, her muscles screaming in protest. She brought the Shadowflare Blade down in a swift arc, aiming for the base of one horn.
The blade bit deep, and a sharp crack echoed through the chamber as the horn fractured. The Monarch bellowed in agony, its molten blood splattering across the floor.
[Yes! Direct hit! Health down to 12,800. Keep going!]
But before Liria could strike again, the Monarch twisted violently, hurling her off its back. She hit the ground hard, gasping for air as pain flared through her body.
The Monarch staggered, one hand clutching its damaged horn, its crimson eyes blazing with rage. "You… dare…"
Liria forced herself to her feet, legs trembling. "Yeah, yeah. I dared. Cry me a river."
The Monarch's form flickered, its outline blurring as its magic surged. Liria barely had time to brace herself before it launched forward, faster than she had ever seen.
Its clawed hand slammed into her side, sending her crashing into a pillar. The stone cracked on impact, and Liria gasped as agony tore through her ribs.
[Health at 400. This is bad. Like, really bad.]
"No kidding," she wheezed.
The Monarch loomed over her, raising its hand for the finishing blow. But as it struck, Liria activated Void Step again, vanishing just in time.
She reappeared behind the Monarch, but the spell drained what little energy she had left. She staggered, her vision dimming at the edges.
I can't keep this up…
Her eyes flickered to the fractured horn.
One more strike.
Gritting her teeth, Liria gathered every last shred of magic she had left. The Shadowflare Blade burned brighter, its black flames flaring hungrily.
The Monarch turned, its eyes locking onto her. But Liria was already in motion. She lunged forward, her body screaming in protest, and brought her sword down with every ounce of strength she had left.
The blade struck the horn once more.
A deafening crack filled the chamber.
The horn shattered.
The Monarch let out an ear-piercing roar as molten blood gushed from the wound, its body flickering and distorting. Liria stumbled back, gasping for air, as the creature's form began to unravel.
[You did it. Health down to 2,000 and falling. It's destabilizing!]
The Monarch's crimson eyes burned with fury and pain. It raised its clawed hand one final time, magic crackling around it.
But before it could strike, its body convulsed violently. Its molten blood turned to black mist, and with a final, agonized cry, the Abyssal Monarch disintegrated into shadows.
Silence fell over the chamber.
Liria dropped to her knees, exhausted beyond measure.
[Well… you're alive. Somehow.]
She let out a shaky laugh. "Barely."
In the center of the chamber, where the Monarch had stood, a faint glow shimmered. A core.
Liria's eyes widened. "No way…"
She forced herself to her feet, limping toward the light. As her fingers brushed the core, a surge of power coursed through her.
Level up. Experience tales at My Virtual Library Empire
[Congrats, dungeon-runner. What now?]
Liria smirked weakly. "Now? We find a way out of this death trap."
And with that, she staggered toward the exit, the weight of victory settling heavily on her shoulders.
The core pulsed faintly in Liria's hand, its light casting soft shadows across the chamber. She felt the surge of energy ripple through her, knitting together some of her wounds, though the bone-deep exhaustion remained. Her system chimed softly.
[Dungeon cleared. Boss defeated: Abyssal Monarch. Rewards initializing…]
Liria blinked, forcing her aching body to stay upright. "Rewards? Finally. I deserve a kingdom's worth after that."
[Don't get greedy. Let's see what we've got.]
A faint hum filled the air as a shimmering chest materialized before her, adorned with intricate patterns of obsidian and silver. With trembling fingers, Liria pried it open.
Inside, several items gleamed: a dark, rune-etched ring pulsing with faint magic, a vial of glowing crimson liquid, and a jagged black dagger shimmering with an ominous aura.
[Not bad. The Ring of Abyssal Resilience boosts your endurance by 15%. That'll keep you from dying as quickly next time. The potion's a Greater Elixir of Vitality, so you won't feel like roadkill for long. And the dagger… huh.]
Liria picked up the weapon, feeling its weight. "What about it?"
[Fang of the Void. High critical damage, and… wait, it lets you siphon magic from enemies? That's borderline unfair. I love it.]
She smirked despite her exhaustion. "Maybe this death trap was worth it after all."
[Careful. That's how you end up in another one.]
She chuckled weakly, slipping the ring onto her finger and pocketing the rest. The chamber's oppressive magic began to fade, the dungeon acknowledging its new victor.
"Let's go," Liria whispered, turning toward the exit that now shimmered with a faint, welcoming light.
[Finally. I was starting to think you lived here.]
"Shut up," she muttered, smiling as she limped forward, leaving the shattered remains of the Abyssal Monarch behind her.
What do you think?
