Ch 73: Birthday [1]
After recalling all the progress, he made over time in just ten days, which he thought was good, he realized it was not satisfactory for all the other spirits.
He then went to take a shower, thinking that if Jasmine saw him, he could say that he woke up to study and was feeling sweaty, so he just came to take a shower.
He went inside the bathroom and started taking a shower. While working downstairs, Jasmine heard the sound of the shower.
She walked upstairs and saw that Rey wasn't on his bed She came out of the room and knocked on the bathroom door to see if he was inside.
"Son, are you in there?"
"Yes, mom, just taking a shower."
"Oh, then it's okay," Jasmine said as she went back to do her chores before leaving for work.
Rey, who was taking the shower, was shocked as his mom, who never forgot his birthday and was always the first to congratulate him, didn't even greet him on this special day when he was about to turn eighteen.
Even though his heart was sad, his mind was saying that she would surely greet him before going to work.
After taking the shower, he walked out of the bathroom.
He went into his room and, after drying his hair, started to think about what he should do. He went to his study table and considered studying for a few hours, as he couldn't go to take the exam unprepared with just twenty days or less remaining.
After studying for two or three hours without any disturbance, decided to take some rest.
He looked outside the window and saw the bright sunlight falling upon everything.
He decided to head downstairs to eat his breakfast and meet his friend to celebrate his birthday a little.
When he came downstairs, he saw his mother and sister eating at the table. He joined them to eat, and like every morning, they greeted each other with a good morning, but nothing else.
This surprised him even more, as he observed that they were acting quite too much normally today.
His eyes fell on the kitchen counter where a roll of paper was lying. He pointed toward it and asked,
"Mom, what is that thing over there?"
/Cough/ /Cough/ /Cough/
Jasmine, who was eating, started to cough as if were stuck in her throat after hearing his question. Emmy handed her a glass of water to help her feel better, and after that, she replied.
"Oh, it's nothing, just a few items needed for the kitchen and nothing at all."
She repeated her words hurriedly.
"Okay then."
"Yes, Rey, I was thinking that you haven't left the house for a few days straight, and I think it will make you unhealthy. So, I suggest you go for a walk outside, spend some time with your friends, so we can do our stuff."
She said the last words in a very low voice.
Rey, who didn't understand, just nodded. After finishing their breakfast, Emmy rushed away to play as today was a holiday from school.
After eating the meal and doing the dishes, Jasmine also went to work, while Rey, was left with nothing to do, decided to head outside and meet his friend.
As his mood was already sour that his mother didn't even remember his birthday.
He messaged James, asking where he was and to meet him at their usual place.
After informing Emmy about his departure, he went outside, and Emmy, who was very happy that he was leaving, quickly closed the door behind him.
"What is going on behind my back? Aiden, do you know something?" He asked, but Aiden's reply only confused him more.
"Kid, don't worry. The things happening now will be good for you or maybe just normal things that won't bother you later on."
After saying it, he went inside, leaving the more confused Rey behind.
Rey sighed and decided to go to the place where he had asked James to come.
After reaching there, he waited for him. As a few minutes passed and James was nowhere to be seen, Rey thought that maybe he wouldn't be able to come and was about to leave when he saw James hurrying toward him.
"Hey, wait, don't leave, brother. I was coming but got delayed while leaving the house," James said. Rey just nodded and before he could do anything James lunged at him, holding his hand, shuffling his hair, and saying,@@novelbin@@
"Happy birthday, my friend! Didn't expect that I would remember it, right?" James said, grinning with a big smile.
"Oh please, I know you should have forgotten that, and your phone must have reminded you," Rey said, pushing James's hand away. After some denying he did nodded, as then he just laughed an awkward smile.
"But don't worry, I appreciate even this much from you," Rey said, feeling a little sad that his family didn't congratulate him on his birthday.
"What happened? Is something wrong James asked, noticing Rey's sadness.
"Oh, nothing, just thinking about where to go to celebrate and then to my house for more partying."
"Oh, then it's okay."
Rey and James went inside the game parlor where they used to play in high school.
Rey and James played many matches, losing a few, but the thrill of playing with friends, cursing each other for mistakes, and pushing the blame onto each other was an experience that be matched by playing solo.
After playing to their hearts' content, they decided to head outside and eat something, as they had been gaming continuously for over four hours.
"Let's go to the convenience store to buy something to eat," James said as Rey remembered that his friend wouldn't go to a restaurant because he knew Rey's family condition. Rey just grinned and nodded, but today's scene would be different than usual.
After walking for a few minutes, James and Rey reached the convenience store where all types of snacks and instant food were available.
James started to head toward something cheap, but Rey held his hand and stopped him.
"Bro, what are you doing? Let me go and take something to eat from our usual stuff," he said. Rey, after nodding, released his hand.
"No, bro, today we won't be eating our usual stuff but something much better. Follow me, I will show you," he said as James, who was confused, started to follow him.
He saw him heading toward the expensive premium items, which were the pride of the store and people rarely bought on special occasions.
"Bro, don't go. Have you hit your head today? The place you are going to right has everything costing over a thousand dragon points each," James said as he tried to stop him. But Rey didn't stop and just headed toward the items labeled as the store's expensive premium products.
A warning was placed that touching an item them without intending to buy it might cost 500 dragon points as a penalty.
Rey didn't bother to look at the board and started to pick out the things he thought might taste good.
"James, choose whatever you like to eat," Rey said as he also signaled him to pick.
"Oi, you know that these things cost over 1000 DP each, right? Tell me how many I have in my hands: 3 or 5," he said, showing his fingers.
"No, I'm good, and don't worry, I'm not crazy or anything. I just have the money to buy these things, and it's from my part-time jobs," he said, showing a substantial amount of money on his phone, with over twenty thousand points displayed. The rest was in another account he found in Jacob's vault.
After showing it, he started to pick items, his eyes landing on the premium noodle bowl, the priciest of them all.
He picked it up and continued to look around for more things to choose.
James, shocked to see this side of his friend, shrugged and picked up a few items to eat, not holding back.
After paying the bill, which was about seventeen thousand and some, they both went outside to eat where a few seats were available.
There were five tables placed outside the store, a few occupied by others, with two left to take.
At one of them, he and James placed their items and started to feast on various things.
They prepared the noodles while tasting other items one by one.
While they were enjoying their meal, little did they know that someone was watching them.
After observing them for a few seconds, the person approached their table and said,
"Ummm~~! Hello, are you...."
