Chapter 429: Chapter 429: Sorry, I Love You

“Mm!” Xiao Han nodded.

“Where are you? I want to see you!” she blurted out, her voice hurried and her emotions highly agitated. The moment Chen Zihan heard Xiao Han’s voice, she dared not believe that this was really Xiao Han’s voice. Since she had changed her phone and number, Chen Zihan had never allowed herself to hope for a reunion with Xiao Han. She considered herself heartless and unfaithful, a woman who could forget him, not even trying to contact Xiao Han during her half-year stay in the United States.

But little did Xiao Han know that Chen Zihan’s mother was always by her side, never really giving her a chance to contact him.

“I’m at the coffee shop opposite the Hanmen Restaurant in the city center,” Xiao Han replied, and then added, “I want to see you too!”

Those words were undoubtedly soul-stirring. Chen Zihan immediately hung up the phone and rushed out without delay.

Xiao Han sat in the coffee shop, his emotions somewhat unstable. One moment he was excited, the next calm. Emotions are the hardest to control, that is an indisputable fact. Xiao Han’s emotions were especially difficult to contain. He tried hard to remain composed, but his body trembled uncontrollably.

...

“My God, what’s happening to me?” Xiao Han was incredibly agitated, gulping down his coffee fiercely. The caffeine generated more heat within him, making it even harder for him to settle down.

Fifteen minutes later, a stunning figure appeared at the doorway.

A white long dress with a pink down jacket on top, long hair as black as ink, her skin pale and smooth as ice, bright red lips, and white teeth. She had an excited and anxious look on her face. When she entered the cafe, her beautiful eyes searched within, and quickly, they fell upon a figure. Even though they hadn’t seen each other for more than half a year, she was still so familiar with that back, so incredibly intimate with it.

Chen Zihan slowly walked over, eager in her heart, but her steps were measured and slow.

When she was just two meters from Xiao Han, she called out softly, “Xiao Han.”

Xiao Han turned around, and on seeing Chen Zihan, his body stiffened. He stood up mechanically and then, looking at Chen Zihan, said, “Zi Han, we meet again. It’s been over half a year, are you okay?”

Chen Zihan’s eyes reddened, and she threw herself into Xiao Han’s embrace. Her body trembled gently as she whispered, sobbing.

“I’m sorry!” Xiao Han’s eyes also reddened, and his nose felt sour. The cold air seemed to contribute to the sense of unease. He clenched his teeth and then said, “I shouldn’t have made you sad.”

“No, I’m not sad!” Chen Zihan sobbed, “I’m happy. Happy that you could still contact me, happy that you haven’t forgotten me.”

“Fool, no matter how time goes by, I will never forget you,” Xiao Han held Chen Zihan tightly and said, “You will always have a place in my heart.”

Chen Zihan cried even louder.

“Don’t cry, others are watching us!” Finally, Xiao Han managed to calm his emotions a bit, but he found that Chen Zihan seemed to be exceptionally agitated. So, he hurriedly tried to soothe her, hoping she could calm down. However, he found that she seemed utterly unable to do so and instead cried even more loudly.

“I don’t care!” Chen Zihan shook her head, “I want to cry, and I will cry.”

“Alright, alright, cry if you must!” Xiao Han simply picked up Chen Zihan and sat on the couch with her in his arms, holding her tightly.

Chen Zihan sat sideways on Xiao Han’s lap, her head buried in his broad chest. This was the first time in half a year that Chen Zihan felt so excited, so thrilled, so glad. She could not recall how she had spent the past half-year or how she managed to step out of that shadow. She could only distract herself with her studies, using academics to numb the pain. Whenever she had a moment to herself, her mind would wander uncontrollably.

After a long cry in Xiao Han’s arms, Chen Zihan’s sobbing ceased.

“Are you okay?” Xiao Han asked, looking down.

“I’m not okay, I’m really not okay.” Chen Zihan stared at Xiao Han and said, “After going to the United States, I thought of you, missed you every day, wishing I could see you right away. But I couldn’t. I could only learn about you through Yang Xiaoyan. I saw your speech in front of all the teachers and students of Linjiang No.1 Middle School, and I saw the sacred moment when you removed your mask. Do you know how much I wished to fly to your side immediately, to share your happiness and your success?”

“I know, I know!” Xiao Han nodded and said, “And you know how much I wished you could stand by my side, to stand in front of everyone with me, to proclaim to the whole world that I, Xiao Han, can do it too.”

Xiao Han’s heart surged with excitement, and so did Chen Zihan’s. Two excited people together made for an even greater excitement.

In the quiet cafe, their intense voices could be heard. Although many curious glances were thrown their way, they paid no heed to the onlookers. And the other patrons, seeing the handsome man and beautiful woman, naturally held their peace.

Both gradually calmed their emotions. Chen Zihan grabbed Xiao Han’s hand and bit down hard, leaving a neat row of teeth marks. She glared at Xiao Han, “You are that mysterious teacher from the Hanmen Training Class, why didn’t you tell me and chose to reveal yourself in front of the whole school instead?”

“I…” Xiao Han said, embarrassed, “If I had told you, would you have come to my house to give me private lessons at night?”

“Wow, it turns out you had ulterior motives all along!” Chen Zihan glared angrily at Xiao Han.

“Hehe…” Xiao Han chuckled, “That wasn’t anything ill-intentioned, I just wanted to spend more time with you.”

“Then why did you have to act like a hooligan around me?” Chen Zihan’s cheeks were rosy, her eyes shining with a hint of spring.

“When did I?” Xiao Han quickly retorted in defense.

“Still denying it?” Chen Zihan gave him a glance, then said, “It wasn’t just once that you behaved like a hooligan. I remember it very well.”

“Yes, yes, I acted like a hooligan!” Xiao Han nodded hurriedly.

Chen Zihan snuggled into Xiao Han’s arms, savoring this rare moment of bliss. Neither of them said a word.

After a long while, Chen Zihan broke the silence, “Are you doing well at Shuimu University?”

“Pretty well,” Xiao Han nodded and said, “I get along harmoniously with all four people in my dormitory, and they are all quite friendly. I participated in the sports meet and won four championships, but I donated all the prize money to the class fund…”

Xiao Han continued telling her about the interesting events at his school, strategically avoiding any mention of his romantic stories there.

Chen Zihan was happy to listen, for she was completely under supervision in the United States and therefore had no interesting school stories to share. As she listened to Xiao Han, she couldn’t help but feel envious. After Xiao Han finished, Chen Zihan, curious, asked, “So… do you already have a girlfriend at Shuimu University?”

“I…” Xiao Han hesitated for a while, then finally nodded and admitted, “Yes, I do.”

Chen Zihan’s body trembled, and tears fell unwillingly from her eyes.

Xiao Han held her tightly and said, “I’m sorry!”

“I don’t blame you,” Chen Zihan shook her head, “If I were you, I would also find someone new. To heal the wounds of one relationship, you must start another.”

“I’m sorry,” Xiao Han bit his teeth.

“Xiao Han, you don’t need to say sorry,” Chen Zihan shook her head, “You haven’t wronged me. The person who should say sorry is me!”

“Silly girl!” Xiao Han gently stroked Chen Zihan’s cheek, “Neither of us has wronged the other.”

“Yes, neither of us has wronged the other!” Chen Zihan said with tears in her eyes, “Even if we’ve lost contact, even if you have found another girlfriend, I will still silently wish you well from the bottom of my heart.”

Chen Zihan’s words filled Xiao Han with indescribable sadness and discomfort. It felt as if his heart was being pricked by needles. At that moment, Xiao Han so desperately wanted to kiss her rosy lips, but he knew he probably had no right to do so. Chen Zihan was now aware that he had a girlfriend, and he surmised that if he dared to kiss her on impulse, she might slap him and curse him as an ungrateful, shameless wretch.

“Do you hate me?” Xiao Han asked.

“No!” Chen Zihan shook her head, “I don’t hate you, I love you. You’re the only man I’ve ever deeply cared for and loved.”

“Don’t you hate me for leaving you?” Xiao Han looked at Chen Zihan earnestly, “Don’t you hate me for not waiting for you, for leaving without a word of goodbye?”

“No,” Chen Zihan said with teary eyes, looking at Xiao Han, “Just like you wrote in your college entrance exam essay: Happiness disappears in the blink of an eye, and from then on, you close your door every day by yourself, turn off the lights by yourself. It’s not too bad, just the cold nights with one less person’s warmth, just happiness no longer whole… Besides, it wasn’t you who chose to leave, it was me. So, the person I hate is myself.”

Chen Zihan regretted leaving; she remembered Xiao Han’s essay as if it were etched into her bones. Rather than a college entrance exam essay, it was more like a letter Xiao Han had written to Chen Zihan—a farewell letter.

Back then, Chen Zihan could feel Xiao Han’s remorse and pain. At the airport, hearing that letter nearly broke her down. She hated herself for leaving Xiao Han, for not standing by her beliefs, for being swayed by her mother. But now, it was too late for regrets.

“I…” Xiao Han was at a loss.

“Xiao Han, how can I ever repay the happiness I owe you?” asked Chen Zihan through her tears.

“No need!” Xiao Han shook his head, “I… ”

Xiao Han was bewildered. Indeed, he had written that article in a moment of youthful fury, never imagining it would place such a heavy burden on Chen Zihan. This left him at a loss. Xiao Han, with tears in his eyes, held Chen Zihan tightly, “I… I don’t know what to say, but all I can tell you is, I love you. No matter what we go through, no matter how the world changes, I will always love you, forever!”
