Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Wait for Me
To Shen Heyu’s surprise, Meng Ru saw the news earlier than she expected.
In the afternoon, just after Shen Heyu had woken up from her nap and was preparing for work, she received a call from Meng Ru, who was in the hospital.
“Shen Heyu, what exactly are you up to? Replacing a spokesperson at this time, in the eyes of outsiders, makes me look like the victim! Are you not afraid that my fans will go berserk? The resulting negative impact will only worsen!”
Shen Heyu laughed, that was exactly the effect she wanted, and she fearlessly responded on the phone, “In any case, you’re injured now. You certainly have your methods, preferring to sacrifice yourself just to teach the intern a lesson. Your current condition will only delay progress, and you don’t get along with Bai Sheng’er at work. Everyone witnessed what happened that day in the studio.”
“Replacing the game’s spokesperson was a corporate decision and ultimately in your best interest. Otherwise, can you be sure you’d recover in the agreed-upon time?”
There was a long silence on Meng Ru’s end, she didn’t speak for quite a while.
...
Shen Heyu was also somewhat indecisive, unsure whether her extreme measures would work on Meng Ru. As silence persisted on the other end, she steeled herself and continued, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to hang up.”
“Wait!”
Meng Ru now urgently exclaimed, “If you do this, aren’t you afraid I’ll break the contract? The fans are all clamoring for me to terminate my contract with the company…”
“That’s up to you. If you decide to go through with that, you’ll first have to pay a substantial penalty for breach of contract.”
Meng Ru frowned on the other side, not understanding Shen Heyu’s intent, “Did President Pei also say to replace me?”
“You can ask him yourself. Because of this incident, the company’s reputation has taken repeated hits, especially as he will stop at nothing to clear the intern’s name. Once the truth comes out, everyone will know the real story. Do you think your popularity will remain as it is now? Switching spokespersons early is the best choice.”
Shen Heyu’s words were logical and well-founded.
Meng Ru’s heart raced. She knew the hard work it took to climb to her current position—how much she had sacrificed was clear to her alone, and certainly, she couldn’t let a momentary mistake cause her to lose everything.
Meng Ru probed, “What would it take to avoid a replacement?”
“President Pei’s terms are straightforward. Come forward and clarify the truth yourself to keep everything you have now. Continue as you are now, failing to appear and clarify, President Pei will use his own methods to uncover the truth, choose to save Bai Sheng’er, and you will leave the company.”
Shen Heyu didn’t say much more; she knew the principle of ‘too much will reverse.’
Meng Ru could analyze the pros and cons for herself.
If her reputation fell, even moving to another place wouldn’t offer her a better future than she has now.
Two seconds later, Meng Ru finally said, “I agree. Tell President Pei that within three days, I will release a video clarifying the events of that day and clear Bai Sheng’er of all blame.”
“The company will only give you one day.”
Shen Heyu spoke and then hung up first.
At this point, it was necessary to press on each step of the way.
With no alternative, Meng Ru, still in the hospital, released the clarification video online that very night.
In the video, she clarified that it was the wire stunt coordinator’s mistake, a mishap in execution, and due to the angle, it seemed like Bai Sheng’er was to blame, but in fact, it had nothing to do with her.
Once the video came out, along with the PR team Shen Heyu had already coordinated with, and the paid online forces stirring up discussions, the direction of public opinion on the internet changed overnight.
Everyone began to clear Bai Sheng’er’s name, feeling sympathy for the cyberbullying she experienced, offering all sorts of pity. As for Meng Ru, although there were voices of condemnation, there were also those of concern, considering she was injured at work.
Ultimately, all blame was pushed onto the wire stunt coordinator.
Pei Yansi, choosing between a top celebrity and Bai Sheng’er, would naturally sacrifice the wire stunt coordinator—this was, by all accounts, the best outcome for the situation at hand.
The next morning, Pei Yansi saw the company’s turnaround and, glancing at the time, realized that it had only been two days, and Shen Heyu had handled everything so well.
Despite a few minor flaws, it was already quite good.
He thought back to the burns on her back, which might still not be completely healed, looked at the landline on his desk, and after two seconds of contemplation, dialed Shen Heyu’s internal line.
In less than ten minutes, Shen Heyu arrived at his office.
“President Pei,” she stood three steps away from his desk, still with that cool and aloof demeanor, her gaze slightly downcast, not looking at him.
Pei Yansi looked at her beautiful, neat features. Her facial structure was very clean, perhaps too clean, which made her seem even more distant and detached.
He watched her for a moment and said, “You handled the recent situation well. I remember your burns are not yet healed, so for the next two days, you can choose to rest at home instead of coming to the office.”
Shen Heyu didn’t say much, after all, she wasn’t someone who wanted to work every day. She nodded and then asked, “Does President Pei have any other instructions?”
Pei Yansi lifted his eyes, looking at her crisp, cold features feeling somewhat stifled.
It seemed that to her, she only ever had such courteous, formal words for him and nothing else.
He suppressed the irritation in his heart, and his voice cooled a few degrees when he spoke, “No.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
Shen Heyu said, not waiting for his reply, and turned to leave.
Without lingering in the office, she gathered her things, getting ready to leave for home to rest, when Old Mrs. Pei’s call came in.
“Xiao Yu, I’ve heard about the company’s issues. You and Yansi come over for dinner tonight, I have something to say to you both.”
Upon hearing this, Shen Heyu slightly furrowed her brows, wanting to refuse. However, the other end did not give her the chance and quickly hung up.
She stared at the phone as the screen went black and sighed discreetly.
Calling him home for dinner, how could he possibly go? With Bai Sheng’er in the world needing his comfort more than anyone, he probably wouldn’t go anywhere else but to her.
Shen Heyu didn’t wish to touch that sensitive nerve, simply taking her phone and sending him a message: [Grandma says come to the old house for dinner tonight.]
She didn’t hold out much hope and was ready to put away her phone and leave when, unexpectedly, he instantly replied: [Wait for me.]
Shen Heyu looked at the simple two words and felt embarrassingly unable to move.
She waited in place for a few minutes and saw Pei Yansi emerge from his office. Draping his black suit jacket over his arm, his white shirt and black trousers accentuated his height yet his manner remained cold, an abstemious man, austere beauty etched in his face.
Even when looking at her, his wife of many years, his slender eyes held no warmth.
As he passed by her, he said in a voice audible only to them, “Follow me.”
What do you think?
