Chapter 93: Chapter 93 Daddy Was Wrong
Such a gaze made Shen Heyu’s heart startle, and her head involuntarily lowered bit by bit. His eyes were still locked tightly on her.
He remained silent.
With him looking at her like that, Shen Heyu felt very nervous. She didn’t know why, as she had thought that after so many years, she wouldn’t be so afraid of this man anymore.
But as it turned out, all he needed was one look to drag her back into those terribly frightening memories.
He stared at her for a long time, and even after the driver came up, he didn’t say anything to her. His silence was like an invisible mountain, pressing down on Shen Heyu until she couldn’t breathe.
Thankfully, when the driver came up, he moved a bit to the side, creating some distance between them.
She sighed in relief inwardly.
He asked in a deep voice, “Where to? I’ll take you.”
Shen Heyu could still hear the displeasure in his voice, but she had no choice but to stay in the car, so she said, “Shen Group.”
Upon hearing this address, Pei Yansi paused for a moment and then his thin lips curled into a faint cold smile, “Going to see Shen Jiangli?”
His tone was very cold, even carrying a hint of a deep chill.
Shen Heyu’s heart gave another jump, “I work for his company. Isn’t it normal to go see him?”
“It is quite normal,” Pei Yansi told the driver, “Let’s go.”
Though he said that, his thoughts were obviously otherwise. He didn’t speak the whole way, and his face was extremely grim.
Anger was clearly visible in his eyes.
He could feel a very faint jealousy growing at the bottom of his heart. He had once thought this trait was very lowly, but never imagined that one day it would grow wildly within him.
He didn’t know what he was thinking, but as they were about to arrive, he asked, “For these six years, have you always been living under his protection?”
Shen Heyu answered somberly, “What if I have? As Yuexue’s father, you’ve been absent for six years and couldn’t protect us. Aren’t others allowed to protect us?”
“Protect?” Pei Yansi scoffed coldly. He hadn’t expected this word to come from her mouth, especially used to describe another man.
Compared to that Shen Jiangli, he was nothing.
He coldly stared out the car window and didn’t say anything else.
Shen Heyu couldn’t grasp his thoughts. As long as he didn’t speak, her heart could feel a little more at ease.
So, she didn’t speak either.
They arrived at Shen Group’s building quickly.
The car had just stopped when, through the rearview mirror, they saw another luxury car pull up behind them.
The driver got out to open the door and out stepped a man—it was Shen Jiangli.
Shen Heyu didn’t even greet Pei Yan; she pulled open the door and got out.
As soon as Shen Jiangli arrived, he saw her.
He smiled and walked over to her, “Heyu, long time no see. How are you and Yuexue?”
His smile was very familiar, as if the two of them had always confided in each other, like lovers reuniting after a long separation.
Shen Heyu also smiled, “We’re good. I’ll bring her to see you tonight.”
“Great, I haven’t seen Little Yueyue in a while. I’ve prepared a gift for her…”
The two chatted and laughed together as they entered the company building.
Leaving Pei Yansi behind, she didn’t even have the desire to look back once.
Pei Yansi saw that scene from the car, and the fire within his heart flared up again. Yet at the same time, there was an even more prominent sense of pain.
Even he couldn’t specify where this pain was coming from.
He remained silent and lit a cigarette, rolling down the car window halfway to let the smoke drift away with the wind.
The swirling smoke spread, veiling his deep, cold eyes and the chilly sternness between his brows.
When the cigarette in his hand had burned down to the end, he told the driver, “Back to the ancestral home.”
The driver drove away.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the Pei Family’s ancestral home.
When he got there, the old lady had already returned with Yuexue. The little girl, upon seeing him, finally didn’t seem to dislike him as much, her clear and bright eyes curiously staring at him.
As if trying to recognize something.
Seeing her like this, Pei Yansi felt his heart soften. Although her facial features resembled his more, in her appearance, it was still very easy to perceive Shen Heyu’s shadow.
She was his and her daughter.
Thinking this, he squatted down and took the initiative to ruffle Yuexue’s head. “Mom will come to pick you up at noon.”
Shen Yueyue’s big eyes curiously stared at him, and after a long while, she asked, “Are you really my dad?”
Pei Yansi nodded. With such obvious facial features and Shen Heyu’s acknowledgment, he thought he no longer needed to do any paternity test.
“Your dad, Yueyue.” He was unusually gentle. Maybe it was because a child doesn’t have as many complex emotions to show as an adult. Liking someone is liking them, disliking is disliking.
So Yueyue wouldn’t push him far away like Shen Heyu. After all, a child always holds a certain affection for their real dad.
Especially when they’ve never seen him before.
Curious, she asked, “But mom said my dad died a long time ago.”
This comment was overheard by the old lady coming out of the kitchen with soup. The old lady couldn’t help but laugh and said, “That’s because your dad did something wrong, and your mom was angry, so she lied to you on purpose.”
Yueyue’s eyes reddened, “Then why hasn’t dad ever looked for me and mom all these years?” The child’s question was sincere, straightforward, and simple.
Unlike the circumlocutions of adults, hard to speak frankly.
But it was this straightforwardness and simplicity that caused a pang in Pei Yansi’s heart.
He knew that during these six years abroad, the mother and daughter had a hard time. Especially Shen Heyu, raising Yueyue all by herself.
He said, “Dad was wrong before.”
Yueyue said, “So now you’re looking for us, are you here to apologize to mom?”
Pei Yansi paused at her words. Was he going to apologize to Shen Heyu? Not likely. But he would find a way to keep the mother and daughter by his side to make up for the six years of absence.
He didn’t speak, and Yueyue didn’t understand why he was silent. She could only bluntly continue, “Aren’t you apologizing to mom?”
Pei Yansi said, “Anyway, Dad will be twice as good to you in the future.”
Yueyue just gave an “Oh” and didn’t linger on talking to him. To her, this dad didn’t seem all that great.
In her presence, he didn’t smile much, which meant he probably didn’t like her that much. He didn’t have the same tenderness and love toward her as her mom did.
Although just a child, she had a keen ability to discern kindness. Whoever smiled at her, she thought of as a good person.
She went over to the old lady’s side and ate her breakfast quietly, not saying much.
After breakfast, Yueyue played by herself in the garden, waiting for Shen Heyu to pick her up at noon.
The old lady sat to one side, watching with Pei Yansi as she crouched in the garden playing with ants.
The old lady asked, “What do you plan to do now?”
What do you think?
