Chapter 103: Chapter 103 Are You Worried Too?
Mu Lan knocked on the door, but when no one responded, she pushed it open.
There was no sign of Huo Tingxiao in the office.
“Huo Tingxiao?”
She called out softly, but still no response came.
She looked around, and he wasn’t lying on the sofa either.
It seemed he was in the private resting room. Gently turning the doorknob, she passed through the foyer, the living room, and arrived at the master bedroom, where Huo Tingxiao lay on the bed, eyes closed, taking a nap.
...
Mu Lan eyed the furrow between his brows, then notice his clammy look and couldn’t help but curl her lips. This man really had issues—stomach ache and not going to the hospital.
She tiptoed to place the thermos and the stomach medicine she had brought on the bedside table, intending to leave. But suddenly, her wrist was caught.
Mu Lan was startled and turned to meet Huo Tingxiao’s deep black eyes.
“Where are you going?”
“You… weren’t you sleeping?”
Mu Lan felt guilty like a little schoolkid caught doing something wrong, even though she was clearly doing a good deed anonymously.
“You woke me up.”
Huo Tingxiao’s words were devoid of any blame, merely a simple statement of fact.
Yet it made one feel somewhat uncomfortable. Mu Lan withdrew her hand, and her tone turned a bit cooler.
“I’m really sorry, then.”
Huo Tingxiao glanced at the items on the bedside table, and a trace of warmth crossed his somewhat pale face.
“Did you bring these?”
Mu Lan, afraid that he might say something unpleasant, quickly explained:
“It was Auntie Li who insisted that I come. I felt bad for refusing her. Don’t get the wrong idea; I’m just running errands.”
Huo Tingxiao paused for a moment before speaking:
“Thank you.”
Mu Lan stared at Huo Tingxiao as if she had seen a ghost. Since when had this man become so civilized and polite as to thank her? The last time he was feverish, he still hadn’t been this confused.
Without thinking, Mu Lan reached out to check his forehead. His temperature was normal; his mind shouldn’t be muddled.
Just as she was about to withdraw her hand, Huo Tingxiao seized it and wouldn’t let go, as if her hand were some kind of treasure.
The heat from his palm was too intense, traveling up her arm straight to her heart. She instinctively wanted to pull away, but Huo Tingxiao would have none of it.
“Such soft hands, yet their owner is so stubborn, so obstinate, huh?”
Huo Tingxiao’s tone was teasing with a hint of… indulgence.
Mu Lan felt her mind wasn’t working right; she unexpectedly found his words to be strangely flirtatious, making her feel somewhat off.
What was he up to? Could it be he was willing to apologize to her?
The thought was fleeting, and Mu Lan laughed at herself. Who was he? Huo Tingxiao, solid as rock—always so tough. Apologize to someone? Was that even possible?
“I think you’re delirious from the illness. Hurry up and take your medicine so I can finish my task.”
Mu Lan withdrew her hand, her tone still cool. Huo Tingxiao didn’t move, merely stating lightly,
“It’s nothing, won’t kill me.”
Mu Lan frowned, disliking his stubborn attitude.
“If you want to torment yourself, that’s your business, but don’t make others worry about you. A problem that could be solved with medicine, yet you insist on toughing it out. Aren’t you being willful?”
Huo Tingxiao looked at her intently.
“Were you worried too?”
Mu Lan was at a loss for words, but she quickly recovered.
“Why would I worry about you?”
Although Mu Lan said this, she couldn’t help but think to herself if he hadn’t eaten breakfast and rushed to the hospital because his stomach had been upset all morning.
“If you’re not worried about me, why do you care whether I take this medicine now or later?”
Huo Tingxiao’s voice was somewhat hoarse, and his facial expression showed pain; it was obvious that his stomach hurt terribly, and he was struggling to endure it.
Mu Lan didn’t want to argue with him at a time like this; winning the argument would bring her no glory.
She turned silently and left, casting a shadow in Huo Tingxiao’s eyes as he lowered his eyelids, concealing the disappointment in his gaze.
However, not long after, she returned with a cup of water in hand. Rustling softly, she opened the medicine box, read the instructions, and pressed out two pills.
“Take the medicine.”
Her tone was indisputable, but Mu Lan was uncertain whether he would comply, feeling somewhat anxious inside.
Huo Tingxiao watched her without blinking, said nothing distressing, took the medicine obediently, then took the water and dutifully followed her instructions.
Mu Lan couldn’t help but laugh when she saw him swallow the pills as if undergoing torture.
“Pfft…”
Huo Tingxiao squinted his eyes, and after setting down the water cup, suddenly pulled Mu Lan onto the bed, startling her.
“Huo Tingxiao, what are you doing?”
He was sick, yet he still had so much strength.
“Shh, don’t make noise, let me sleep quietly for a while.”
Holding her in his arms, he found a comfortable position with his chin in the nape of her neck while Mu Lan, taken aback, dared not to move.
If she had known being soft-hearted would lead her here, not only bringing medicine but also soup wasn’t enough; now she had to serve as a human pillow?
Her mind told her she needn’t care about Huo Tingxiao’s wellbeing; she could stand up and leave.
Yet her body and heart defied her, relaxing gradually in his embrace.
Mu Lan thought, forget it, she might as well consider it an apology for disturbing his sleep the last two days as she sleepwalked, after all, she wasn’t behaving properly, talking about living apart but sneaking back to the master bedroom in the middle of the night.
Huo Tingxiao felt the person in his arms breathe evenly, and finally slowly opened his eyes.
His stomach was still painfully cramping, but it was no match for the warmth spreading through his heart.
He had long been used to shouldering everything alone, taught from a young age by the old man only about the survival of the fittest, natural selection, and that the bravest triumph on narrow paths.
While other children were being spoiled, he had already begun learning various language skills.
Like that time Mu Lan asked him if he didn’t even know about “Dragon Ball”, did he even have a childhood.
From his earliest memories, he never had anything like a childhood. And as for romantic relationships, a complete blank; even members of the Huo Family once thought there might be something wrong with his sexual orientation, while outsiders all thought Sheng Xueqin was someone important to him, when in fact, it wasn’t the case at all. If it weren’t for that incident that happened the year he finished his military service, which made him decisively decide to break free from the Huo Family and start his own enterprise, and it was also at that time that Mu Lan appeared, and they married… it all seemed predestined.
Huo Tingxiao suddenly thought about the words Lin Yize had said, if it came down to benefits, surely the Sheng Family would have been the better choice, right?
Yet he had never thought of marrying Sheng Xueqin, even when it seemed that his marriage to Mu Lan might not last, he had never considered it, not at all.
Was it because he was used to seven years of her companionship, or had he actually changed unwittingly?
Huo Tingxiao couldn’t figure it out and eventually stopped trying.
Closing his eyes, it wasn’t long before he too fell into a deep sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, when Mu Lan woke up, only she was left on the large bed. She sat up sharply, glanced at her phone, and it was nearly the end of the workday.
“Mu Lan, are you a pig? How could you sleep for so long?”
Annoyed, she got up from the bed, freshened up in the bathroom, then left the rest area.
But as soon as she opened the door, she heard arguing voices from outside.
What do you think?
