Chapter 69: Chapter 0069: The Awkwardness of Straight Men

“Huo Tingxiao, that’s not the point!”

Gu Xiaoman felt her brain wasn’t functioning properly. She had intended to confront Huo Tingxiao, yet somehow she ended up following him instead. Stay calm, rational, don’t let this man lead you by the nose.

“But to me, that is the point.”

Huo Tingxiao’s tone was neither light nor heavy, but it shook Gu Xiaoman sufficiently. Huo Tingxiao caring so much about Mu Lan’s opinion of him was clearly…

This reaction… This reaction was clearly love! Staring at Huo Tingxiao without blinking, Gu Xiaoman blurted out:

“You… You couldn’t have failed to realize that you’ve already fallen for Lanlan, could you?”

...

Huo Tingxiao was stunned for a moment, his gaze towards Gu Xiaoman filled with confusion.

“I really don’t understand you women. Is liking someone or loving them really that important? Mu Lan and I are already married, legally husband and wife. Isn’t it normal for me to be responsible for her and to take care of her?”

Gu Xiaoman felt dizzy from his reasoning; how could this man’s thought process be so different from normal people?

“So, all in all, you are good to her because she is Mrs. Huo, not because she is Mu Lan?”

“But she is Mrs. Huo, and she is also Mu Lan.”

“…”

It’s said that men and women are creatures from different planets; Gu Xiaoman truly realized it.

Mu Lan liking this kind of man must really be tough for her. Huo Tingxiao had his own peculiar and stubborn way of thinking, which simply didn’t align with ordinary people.

“Forget it, I can’t make you understand. Just don’t give her hope and then let her down.”

While the two were still caught up in this matter, Lin Yize had apparently understood everything and came around the corner casually holding a bouquet of flowers.

Huo Tingxiao’s face darkened immediately upon seeing the large bunch of white platycodon flowers in his hand, and upon meeting his meaningful gaze—could it be that Lin Yize had overheard everything he and Gu Xiaoman had just discussed?

“Mr. Lin is not in the office at this time but has come to the hospital, which really is thoughtful.”

“I don’t have many friends in Sea City; Mu Lan is one of them. Since she’s hospitalized, of course I should show more concern. What, is President Huo thinking I’m being nosy, not welcoming me, or are you lacking in confidence about Mu Lan, afraid we might have something more than friendship?”

Gu Xiaoman could clearly feel the competitive atmosphere between the two men and decided it was best not to become cannon fodder.

“I’ll go buy some snacks Lanlan loves.”

Saying so, she quickly made herself scarce.

No sooner had Gu Xiaoman left than Huo Tingxiao got right to the point.

“You heard.”

Lin Yize smiled and feigned ignorance:

“What is President Huo talking about? I don’t understand.”

Huo Tingxiao’s lips curled coldly as he said:

“Mr. Lin likes playing games of pretense, feel free to continue.”

Saying so, he no longer wanted to waste time with Lin Yize and turned towards the direction of the hospital room.

Lin Yize, with his long strides, tried to follow, but was stopped by the nurse at the station.

“Sorry sir, you are not a family member and can’t just enter the patient’s room.”

“But I was just here yesterday…”

“Sorry, please cooperate with our work.”

Huo Tingxiao turned around a few steps away, his lips curling slightly and his gaze indifferent, which Lin Yize saw as a blatant provocation.

Eventually, having no choice, he handed over the flowers to the duty nurse and left in disappointment.

Huo Tingxiao returned to the hospital room where Mu Lan was sound asleep. He leaned on the couch, pulled out his mobile phone to deal with some emails, and of course, followed up on the progress of the investigation with He Yan.

Suddenly, Mu Lan on the bed seemed to be caught in a nightmare, getting somewhat agitated.

“No… don’t touch me… don’t touch me…”

Huo Tingxiao quickly stood up and went over to Mu Lan, holding her hand with one hand and gently stroking her hair with the other, softly comforting her.

“It’s okay, it’s okay, there, it’s all okay.”

Perhaps his comforting was effective, as Mu Lan’s furrowed brow slowly relaxed.

After waiting a while longer and seeing her settle down, he tried to pull his hand away but found she was gripping it tightly, making it impossible to move.

Huo Tingxiao watched the two holding hands for a long time, the tenderness in his eyes gradually intensifying as he simply sat down on the chair.

The room was too quiet, somewhat inducing sleepiness, and unknowingly, Huo Tingxiao couldn’t help but lean over the bed, resting his arm on it.

Only his long legs had nowhere to rest but could only stand straight under the bed.

After an unknown amount of time, Mu Lan woke up and saw the man sleeping beside her.

She had just had a terrifying dream, fortunately, Huo Tingxiao had suddenly appeared in it. She took a deep breath of relief and, feeling the warmth in her palm, was stunned for two seconds before realizing her hand was being held by him.

Just as she was about to get up and move around, a sinking feeling came from her lower abdomen, with a slight prickly sensation.

Oh no!

“Huo…”

Blushing, she wanted to ask Huo Tingxiao to wake up, but just as she spoke, her face turned even redder.

Seeing Huo Tingxiao deep in sleep, she was torn about whether to wake him or not.

Huo Tingxiao slowly opened his eyes and saw Mu Lan’s face, red as a fully ripe shrimp.

“What’s wrong?”

“I… I’ve got my period.”

Mu Lan muttered, wishing smoke could rise from the top of her head.

“Period?”

Huo Tingxiao, not understanding, repeated.

“It’s that thing!”

“What?”

“My aunt! My aunt has come.”

Realizing belatedly, Huo Tingxiao stiffened and then said awkwardly,

“Then… I’ll go buy you that thing.”

Saying so, like a gust of wind, he turned and left the hospital room.

Mu Lan held the blanket to her face, feeling so embarrassed she could almost explode.

Lifting the blanket, she carefully got out of bed, relieved that her dizziness had greatly subsided.

Huo Tingxiao rushed to the convenience store downstairs and said to the cashier with a blank expression:

“Excuse me… where are the women’s products?”

“What kind of women’s products?”

“The kind that’s used every month.”

“Ah, sanitary pads? Just keep walking to the very last shelf.”

Nonchalantly walking to the innermost shelf, Huo Tingxiao stared at the myriad of differently sized packages, frozen.

Miniature, daily-use, nighttime, with wings, without wings, and even tampons.

This was beyond the scope of his knowledge; not having a clue which to choose, he simply picked one of each, making it look like he was shopping at a wholesale market.

The cashier, a middle-aged woman, could not help but laugh as she scanned the barcodes.

“Hello, that will be 327, will you pay by WeChat or in cash?”

“Card.”

Saying this, he pulled out his black card. The woman saw it, her smile freezing and then she looked at Huo Tingxiao as if he were some rare species.

Seeing her zoning out, Huo Tingxiao couldn’t help but urge,

“Please hurry up.”

“Oh, yes, of course.”

She quickly processed the card payment, and Huo Tingxiao, carrying a large bag, briskly left.

When he returned to the hospital room, he found no sign of Mu Lan on the bed, tightening his heart.

“Mu Lan?”
