She’s a Passerby, But Can See the Protagonist’s Halo

Chapter 10

On their way back to the dormitory, Yi Zhi secretly observed Yan, but Yan seemed like an ordinary college student, still showering her with praise.

"Yi Zhi is really amazing."

"Even better than the instructor."

Yan's flattery was relentless, making Yi Zhi feel increasingly uncomfortable.

If she hadn't known about Yan's skills, it might have been fine, but now that she did, Yan's words sounded more and more like mockery.

"No, no, you're also very skilled," Yi Zhi quickly replied.

She casually asked, seemingly out of curiosity, "Yan, you're so good at this. Have you practiced before?"

"Yes, I have," Yan replied, looking up with a smile.

"I used to practice at a shooting club and a shooting range. In high school, a friend of mine was in a relationship, and her boyfriend taught her how to shoot. They always dragged me and my boyfriend along as cover. I practiced a lot, but someone like you, Yi Zhi, is truly gifted."

Could someone really become this skilled just by practicing at a shooting club?

Yi Zhi wasn't familiar with the current state of shooting clubs in this world. If they weren't too expensive, she might consider finding a place to practice and get a feel for it again.

Although this was a peaceful society, the apocalypse could come without warning, and Yi Zhi didn't want to let her skills go to waste.

She was half-skeptical of Yan's words but pretended to believe them. However, when Yan shifted the topic to her, Yi Zhi felt a pang of unease.

"I also practiced before," Yi Zhi said.

"Just like you. An elder who retired from the military taught me."

This wasn't a lie, though the specifics of where she practiced were another matter.

"How about we find a shooting range near the school this weekend and go together?" Yi Zhi tentatively suggested.

If Yan had secrets she wanted to keep hidden, she might refuse.

"Sure," Yan replied.

"I haven't practiced all summer, and I'm itching to go. I was planning to go with my boyfriend anyway. We can see if Ding Ling and the others want to join. If they do, the whole dorm can go."

Yan didn't seem to mind, but she brought the other roommates into the plan.

The three of them bought food from the cafeteria and returned to the dorm. After a short nap, they attended their afternoon class on battlefield first aid, bandaging, and CPR. Due to the limited number of mannequins, the class wasn't conducted simultaneously.

They had watched the instructional videos a couple of days ago, but this was their first time practicing.

After the instructor demonstrated on the mannequin, it was the students' turn to practice.

Since Yi Zhi had already made a splash that morning, it was no surprise that the instructor paid extra attention to her in the afternoon. He even asked Yi Zhi to treat him as the patient for a quick bandaging exercise.

Yi Zhi had intended not to stand out too much, but as soon as she picked up the triangular bandage, her hands moved faster than her thoughts. By the time she realized it, she had already completed a near-perfect bandage.

The instructor, who had been impressed with Yi Zhi earlier, looked up with a serious expression.

"Yi Zhi, have you ever considered joining the military?"

With her top-tier academic performance, focus, reflexes, and excellent practical skills, the military needed talents like her.

But Yi Zhi shook her head. "Thank you, Instructor. It's just something I learned from my family."

Her skills were taught by her mentor in her previous life, so it wasn't entirely untrue.

Hearing this, the instructors who had gathered around looked disappointed.

Of course, someone with such excellent shooting skills and battlefield first aid knowledge wouldn't be from an ordinary family.

Yi Zhi must be from a military family. Since she had chosen to attend Bin University instead of a military academy, it was clear she wasn't planning to join the military.

"That's fine too. You're studying agriculture, right? Study hard and follow in the footsteps of Grandpa Yuan. Serve the country," the instructor said, patting Yi Zhi on the shoulder.

The instructor didn't press for more details, and Yi Zhi quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

She would never forget which military district her mentor had served in or his rank, but since this was a different world, she would have had to make something up if the instructor had asked further.

It was a reminder not to stand out too much—doing so could risk exposing herself.

"In a few days, there will be a freshman military skills competition. If you represent the College of Agriculture, you're sure to do well."

When the instructor said this, Yi Zhi was about to decline.

Her mental age was already older than her classmates, and she felt it would be unfair to compete with them using the skills and experience from her past life.

"For the next three days, you can come for special training. You can practice shooting, and all the ammunition will be covered by the school."

At this, Yi Zhi's words caught in her throat.

Free shooting practice... that was a tempting offer.

"Go for it, Yi Zhi. No one in our college is better than you."

"Yeah, Instructor, will this count for extra credits?"

"Yi Zhi, if you don't go, who else in our college would dare to?"

The other freshmen from her college chimed in, and Yi Zhi reluctantly nodded.

Extra credits were always a good thing, and she wouldn't have to sit through more lectures or watch videos. Plus, she'd get more time with the guns.

After the demonstration, the students paired up to practice.

Yi Zhi had to wait until all the other students finished their bandaging practice before switching to CPR with another group, so she went to check on her two roommates.

Yan and Gu Jiasui were practicing CPR on a row of mannequins.

Gu Jiasui's movements were rough and not very skilled. Her pressure and rhythm were off, but she was trying her best to follow the standard, just like the other freshmen.

As for Yan...

Yi Zhi's brows furrowed as she watched.

Her movements were too precise.

Yan's actions were practically textbook-perfect.

She was excellent at shooting, and her CPR technique was nearly flawless.

A high school student... even if it was a private, so-called elite school, would they really teach so many skills unrelated to academics?

After Yan and Gu Jiasui finished their practice, Yi Zhi was about to approach them when the instructor from the College of Literature called Yan over.

"Yan, wait a moment."

"You were the second-best shooter in the College of Literature this morning, and you're currently first in CPR. Each college will nominate three students to compete against other colleges. Are you willing to participate?"

"It counts for extra credits!"

Yi Zhi's eyes narrowed. As expected, even though Yan had tried to downplay her skills, her high performance in multiple areas had caught the instructor's attention.

Yan had initially wanted to refuse—she didn't want to draw attention to herself—but the mention of extra credits made her change her mind.

"No problem, Instructor. Thank you for giving me this opportunity!"

She wasn't about to turn down a chance to earn extra credits.

What could be more important than credits in college life?

Yi Zhi felt a surge of satisfaction. This was good. If both she and Yan were selected for the special training, she would have more opportunities to probe Yan's secrets. She was sure Yan would slip up eventually.

By the end of the day, all the students selected to represent their colleges in the competition were added to a group chat. Yi Zhi immediately noticed Yan and her boyfriend's matching profile pictures.

They were simple line-drawing avatars in the same style, making it obvious they were a couple.

She remembered that Yan's boyfriend was in the College of Medicine. If he had also been selected for shooting, maybe Yan hadn't been lying? Had they really practiced together in high school? Were they both just naturally talented?

For a moment, Yi Zhi felt uncertain.

That evening, back in the dorm, Yi Zhi casually brought up the topic, which naturally piqued Chu Bingbing's curiosity.

"Wow, Yi Zhi, Yan, you two are amazing. I only scored a few dozen points in shooting this afternoon."

"Yi Zhi practiced at home, but Yan, you've even learned CPR before?"

Yan didn't mind discussing it. "Our high school had a lot of special courses. We had people from the Red Cross come to teach us, and we also learned how to use AEDs and other miscellaneous things."

"Our school had high tuition, and most of the students came from well-off families planning to study abroad, so there were a lot of extracurricular activities, clubs, spring and autumn outings, museum visits, and history classes."

"But our class was focused on the domestic college entrance exam, so we didn't participate in as many activities as the other students."

She briefly described her high school's rich campus life, leaving Chu Bingbing full of envy.

Chu Bingbing had worked hard to get into a prestigious high school in a prefecture-level city, focusing solely on her studies and the college entrance exams. Even in her relatively relaxed first year of high school, she had never experienced such a variety of activities.

Ding Ling didn’t say anything. She had no idea what high school was like.@@novelbin@@

"My boyfriend is taking medical-related classes, so I’m tagging along. After all, it’s about saving lives. We’ve learned a lot about first aid and bandaging—better safe than sorry, right? You can never have too many skills," Yan said.

What Yan didn’t mention was that there was a story behind why she and her childhood friend had started taking medical classes—a story that still made her cringe whenever she thought about it. It was a memory filled with frustration.

Back in the day, after school one afternoon, she and her childhood friend had stumbled upon a man in a suit, covered in blood and on the verge of death in a narrow alley.

Guided by the principle that saving a life is more virtuous than building a seven-story pagoda, and that doing good deeds accumulates merit, Yan and her friend sprang into action. One called 120 and 110, while the other performed emergency first aid, keeping the man conscious by talking to him.

But then, out of nowhere, a woman appeared in the alley, delicate as a swaying white flower in the wind. She had an aura that screamed "transmigrated from a novel," and she glared at Yan and her friend with anger.

"Who are you? Where did you come from?" she demanded.

After the police and ambulance arrived, the woman vanished. Later, she somehow managed to track down Yan and her friend’s contact information, bombarding them with calls and messages. She rambled on about how they had "stolen the plot" and insisted, "I’m the real female lead."

Yan and her friend wasted no time in reporting the strange woman to the police. Based on Yan’s lifelong ability to see "auras," this was the first time she had encountered someone with such a bizarre aura.

After that incident, Yan decided to take things seriously. She and her childhood friend threw themselves into learning all kinds of first aid techniques, which is why they’re so skilled now.

After all, life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and in a world where people with strange auras exist, it never hurts to have a few extra skills up your sleeve!
