Chapter 213 - 212 - Champions League Final (Part 7)
Jimenez, on the edge of the field, gesticulated intensely.
"Close the spaces! Don’t let them turn the ball so easily!" Eddie shouted, his voice almost lost in the deafening noise of the crowd.
On the bench, the Brighton players watched the game with their nerves on edge.
Mark, the reserve goalkeeper, held his hands together, as if in silent prayer for Anton to keep shutting him down. Parker and Kevin, the substitute defenders, didn’t even understand the difficulty of marking a striker like Nishida.
Hillebrand, Willian, and the other reserves were leaning forward and wanting to get into the game.
On the pitch, Nishida seemed unstoppable. In one move, Nishida dominated on the edge of the box and shot with venom. The ball deflected off Luiz Fernando and, for a moment, looked like it was going to fool Anton. However, the Brighton goalkeeper stretched to his utmost and pulled off another miraculous save.
"WHAT A SAVE! UNBELIEVABLE! ANTON IS HAVING THE MATCH OF HIS LIFE!"
Eddie punched the air, and Kader clapped his hands vigorously.
"MY FRIENDS, THIS GOALKEEPER IS A WALL! ANTON IS UNPLAYABLE!"
The Bayern players put their hands to their heads in disbelief.
The opposing coach shook his head while the Brighton players hugged each other on and off the pitch, celebrating their team’s heroic resistance.
Lucas knew Bayern was becoming increasingly impatient. It was the perfect chance to exploit the spaces left by the German team.
When Brighton won the ball back in midfield, Lucas saw Raphael was free on the left and set the winger up with a perfect delivery.
Raphael dominated and set off to beat his marker. With a quick dribble, he left the defender behind and broke into the area to finish.
The ball hit the crossbar.
"ON THE BRAVE! BRIGHTON ALMOST EXTEND THE LEAD!"
On the bench, Jimenez put his hands to his head, while Alex kicked a bottle in frustration.
Bayern’s response was immediate. In a blazing counter-attack, Nishida received the ball on the edge of the box and made a quick turn, deceiving Luiz Fernando. He unleashed a left-footed rocket, but the ball skimmed the crossbar.
"THE GAME IS CRAZY! IT’S ATTACK ON ONE SIDE, ATTACK ON THE OTHER! WHO’S GOING TO SCORE FIRST IN THE SECOND HALF?"
The adrenaline was running high. Lucas knew that at any moment, something big would happen. And then came the moment that changed the game for Brighton.
In a good move, Raphael won a corner with a ball splashed out.
Lucas latched onto the ball at the corner, took a deep breath, and looked into the box. Inside the penalty area, the tallest players were Felix and Javier, and they positioned themselves to attack the ball. Brighton had a precious chance to extend their lead and make life even more difficult for Bayern.
The referee allowed the kick, and Lucas took his distance. He visualized the perfect trajectory and, with a precise touch with the tip of his foot, launched the ball closed towards the penalty area. But before any Brighton player could reach the cross, the opposing goalkeeper, in an impressive leap, stretched out his arms and grabbed the ball in mid-air.
A frustrated roar echoed from the stands as the keeper landed safely, gripping the ball against his chest.
It was then that the tragedy unfolded.
The Bayern goalkeeper raised his head and saw Nishida advancing quickly down the right. His vision was impeccable, and he spotted Brighton’s fatal error: there were too few players defending. Only Loki, Daniel Riber and Luiz Fernando were in position to hold off a lightning counter-attack. Without hesitation, the goalkeeper launched the ball with a powerful shot.
The field seemed to open up for Nishida when he controlled the ball with the side of his thigh. He then sprinted away, leaving behind any attempt at containment.
Loki, the Brighton right-back, advanced first to intercept him, but Nishida was already on the move. He acted like a classic winger, taking the ball to the by-line, exploiting his absurd speed for a classic center-forward. With a subtle touch, he passed Loki as if he were a mere training cone.
Daniel Riber tried to make up for his tactical error and sprang up to cover the play. He knew Nishida liked to cut inside and would try to prevent this at all costs. But Nishida was a born predator, and pulled him first to the right and then actually cut to the left.
When he finally reached the edge of the box, the whole stadium knew what was coming next. Nishida pulled the ball back, preparing for a powerful shot.
Everyone’s eyes were on him.
Daniel Riber and Luiz Fernando were desperate to stop him. Even Anton, the Brighton goalkeeper, was completely focused on the imminent shot.
It was then that Nishida showed why he was one of the most lethal players of this generation.
With a touch of pure genius, instead of hitting the target, he used the instep of his foot to deliver a low, three-fingered pass through the Brighton defense.
The ball slid across the pitch with a bizarre curve, cutting out the intent of the opposing players, who were fixated on Nishida’s movement.
And waiting on the other side was Bayern’s left winger - Jeong Woo-yeong.
Jeong read the play impeccably, broke into the box and, before Anton could react, finished the first time, sending the ball into the back of the net.
"GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!!! It’s Bayern Munich!!!"
The Brighton players were paralyzed, unable to process what had just happened.
Nishida just smiled, pointing to his teammate who finished the move as if to say: "I knew you’d be there."
The German team’s players ran to celebrate near the fans, while the Brighton players looked at each other in disbelief. They had been ahead the whole time, controlling the game, but a single positional error allowed Bayern to equalize.
Lucas took a deep breath. He knew there was still time on the clock, but that goal was a bucket of cold water. They needed to react. And fast.
What do you think?
