Chapter 103 103: Introductions
Azrael and Maddison arrived at the gates of the mansion along with a long row of other cars.
At the gate, guards took note of every car and the demigods within to make sure that they were on the invite list before being let in.
When Maddison's car arrived, the guard at the gate looked at the list for a second longer than normal, and Azrael wondered for a moment if Sunny hadn't put their name on it.
But then, the guard nodded and moved out of the way to let them in.
Maddison was looking around with a nervousness about her as she saw all the demigods heading toward the mansion. There were going to be nearly a hundred people at this party, and Maddison was sure that the both of them were the only children of Darkness present.
If not for the fact that Azrael needed her help, Maddison wouldn't have been caught dead at an event like this.
Azrael noticed Maddison's nervousness, and he turned to her when she started to tap her feet.
"You should relax."
Maddison released a tense breath before she swallowed and nodded.
"Yeah, sorry. I just haven't been to an event like this for a while."
"Well, I've never been to one before, so I think I'm the one that should be nervous."
Maddison laughed lightly. She couldn't imagine Azrael being nervous.
Azrael put his hand on Maddison's knee, and Maddison turned to look at him in surprise.
"Everything will be fine. Just follow my lead, okay?"
Maddison nodded resolutely, and Azrael smiled.
"You look beautiful, by the way."
Maddison's blush immediately came back with a vengeance, and she was about to say something when the car stopped, and their door was opened by one of the valet's standing around the entrance.
Maddison stepped out, and Azrael followed after her.
There was a red carpet that many other demigods were using to head toward the mansion, and Azrael started to walk up to the house as well, with Maddison following beside him.
Most of the demigods there were students from their school, and they were surprised to see Maddison and Azrael because they didn't think that Sunny would invite them.
At the door of the mansion, there were more guards who were checking names off a long list before allowing demigods to enter the mansion.
The guards were handing out some sort of badge to the demigods, and Azrael realized in mild surprise that the badges were similar to the ones they wore at school.
It was a badge to signify their Celestial Guardian.
Azrael narrowed his eyes at this. It would be slightly more difficult to move around if everyone was always staring at him because of the badge. He would have to be really careful.
Maddison and Azrael both received their badges when they got to the door, and Azrael noticed one of the guards give them a nasty look for a moment before schooling his features.
Azrael ignored all the murmuring from the demigods around as he and Maddison put on their badges, and then he took her by the hand and headed inside.
The interior of the mansion was just as extravagant as the exterior.
The large central hall had been decorated beautifully, and there were multiple demigods standing around and talking with each other. On the left side of the mansion, there was a long staircase leading up to the higher floors, and a double door on the opposite side of the room led to the inner chambers.
Servers carrying non-alcoholic wine were moving about, and Azrael grabbed two glasses from one of the servers and handed one to Maddison.
Maddison was looking around cautiously while following behind Azrael, and Azrael asked her a question.
"Is Harold here?"
Maddison looked around the room calmly before she shook her head.
"I don't see him."
Azrael frowned as the both of them made their way toward the bar on the other side of the room. There were free seats arranged in front of the bar, and they both took a seat while drinking from their glasses.
There was soft music playing, but no one was dancing because the event hadn't properly started yet.
Most of the demigods here were part of the upper echelon of society, so they knew how to properly behave at events like this.
And those that weren't from the upper echelon followed the lead of others to make sure they didn't make fools of themselves.
The inaudible chatter of the guests was drowned out by the soft music playing in the background, and Azrael looked around while drinking his wine to see that many people were glancing toward him and Maddison with curiosity.
It was obvious that they weren't expected to be here.
"Azrael, there you are. Come."
Azrael felt a feeling of dread fill him when he heard Cleopatra's voice coming from the side.
He turned and saw that Cleopatra was wearing a grey gown that came down to her feet. There was a black flower attached at her hip, and on her hands, she wore black gloves.
It was obvious that the gown perfectly complimented Azrael's suit, and Maddison didn't fail to pick up on this fact.
"Hello, Miss Cleopatra."
Maddison greeted Cleopatra respectfully once she saw her, and Cleopatra just waved away the greeting and called on Azrael again.
"There's someone I want you to meet. Come on."
Azrael nodded as he turned and told Maddison that he would be back soon.
Maddison watched as Azrael left her at the bar, and her eyes narrowed toward Cleopatra in anger.
There was deep rage building up from inside Maddison's heart, and all of it was directed at the older girl. Neither Azrael nor Cleopatra picked up on this, but it was only a matter of time before Maddison's rage became something uncontrollable.
…
Azrael walked beside Cleopatra amidst the stares from all the classmates around them.
People were surprised by the fact that Cleopatra was with Azrael, but Cleopatra didn't seem to care about what people thought as she led Azrael straight toward a group of older teens standing on the other side of the hall.
There were three girls and one guy, and they all held glasses of wine in their hands. They were dressed beautifully, and Azrael could tell that all of them were from well-off families just from the way they carried themselves.
But only two of them wore badges on their chest, so the others were probably regular humans who didn't go to their school.
Once they got to the new group, Cleopatra smiled and started the introductions.
"Azrael, these are my friends. Thea, Grace, Rachael, and Theo. Everyone, this is Azrael, the boy I told you about."
The girl that Cleopatra had introduced as Grace was the first one to speak up.
"Oh, the reject. How… interesting. I honestly cannot see any way this could possibly go wrong."
Her sarcasm was thick and obvious, but the girl standing beside her, Rachael, piped in to reprimand her.
"Oh, ignore Grace. She doesn't understand romance since she's never had a boyfriend before. I'm fully in support of your relationship."
Azrael sighed internally before speaking.
"There is no relationship."
They all gained surprised expressions on their faces as they turned to look at Cleopatra for confirmation, and Cleopatra just shrugged.
"He's just playing hard to get. Give it time."
The sole boy in their group, Theo, chuckled at the situation before pointing his glass at Azrael in a mock salute.
"I wish you luck with this one, Azrael. When she sets her mind to something, she doesn't stop till she gets it. She's like a shark that smells blood in the water. It's better to just give up now and accept your fate."
"I'll keep your advice in mind."
Azrael said this with a fake smile plastered on his face. He then finished the glass of wine in his hand before turning to Cleopatra.
"If that's all then…"
Cleopatra shook her head.
"No, there's someone else. Has anyone seen Jennifer anywhere?"
The others shook their heads, and Cleopatra looked around curiously to search for the person. She finally sighed when she saw the woman picking out wine from the bar on the other side of the hall.
Cleopatra excused herself and went over to meet with the woman, and Azrael watched as they had a conversation before Cleopatra started to lead the woman over to where the others were.
Azrael felt his heart skip a beat once he locked eyes with the woman, and it was only his well-tamed self-control that helped him to keep his wit intact.
Azrael recognized this woman. She was the same person that came to investigate Francis' death a few weeks ago.
The investigator from the police department.
"Cleo, I already said I didn't want to talk to anyone. I only came here because Sunny asked me to show up. I'm not even going to stay for long."
The investigator spoke up in a tired tone as she neared the group, and Cleopatra ignored her.
When the investigator finally locked eyes with Azrael, she also felt surprised by his presence and spoke up.
"You're the first-year student from that time, the child of Thanatos."
What do you think?
