Chapter 107
"It's great that my back doesn't hurt anymore."
The jelly girl muttered this to herself while lying belly down on the bed and kicking her feet. Her soft, gelatinous body curved and sank into the bed—a posture that would certainly have caused pain for a human.
But now, the jelly girl had no back to feel pain with. Instead, her soft body merely rustled against the plush mattress.
Bored out of her mind, the jelly girl wriggled around until she realized that the jelly creatures she sent outside had not returned. Twisting her upper body while leaving her lower body in place, she recalled what had happened earlier.
After watching Yang Hana’s peculiar video message with Han Seori, she had returned to her room, only to be ambushed by the jelly creatures.
It wasn’t as if a jelly rebellion had erupted to overthrow the oppressive jelly girl. It was just that...
Thump! Thump!
Jungsik lunged at her, slamming its body into her stomach. Daesik pounded her thighs with its tiny doll hands.
Exposed to sudden violence, the jelly girl stared blankly at their antics, slightly flustered.
‘Why are they doing this all of a sudden?’Though it didn’t hurt, this behavior was unprecedented (Jungsik being the exception), leaving the jelly girl bewildered. What shocked her the most was the betrayal of Daesik, who usually nudged her affectionately to be picked up.
Amid her shock, a revelation struck her like lightning. Jungsik had always thrown its body at her stomach, so she could ignore that. Daesik, on the other hand, had been flailing its doll arms and clutching its stomach as it leaned forward.
When Daesik brought its hand from its belly to its mouth, the jelly girl realized the truth and smacked the jelly.
‘…They were hungry.’
Thinking back, she had locked them in the room without feeding them, thanks to Yang Hana’s unexpected arrival. The realization filled her with embarrassment.
She rubbed her soft head and waved her hand apologetically at the two jellies.
‘…Maybe they sensed my apology.’
Jungsik, previously furious, finally stopped bumping into her, releasing small streams of sticky jelly from its back. However, she soon noticed the absence of another jelly.
Glancing around the room, she spotted Sosik lying flat on the floor with its tiny hands on its belly, as if shipwrecked and resigned to its fate. Shaking her head in exasperation, she thought:
‘They’ll devour the food the moment it arrives, anyway.’
Scratching her chin and debating whether to go to the kitchen, the jelly girl felt a profound laziness. Having just exhausted her mental energy earlier, she didn’t want to do anything else. Instead, she wanted to roll around on the cozy bed.
‘I just clocked out—can’t they cut me some slack?’
While idly bubbling, the jelly girl recalled her earlier conversation in the management room.
“Did you assign Hana a room?”
“There weren’t any vacant rooms with beds, so I gave her my old one.”
“Ah… well, that’s surprisingly thoughtful of you.”
“No, it’s not like that! I couldn’t let someone who had been rolling in the snow sleep on the floor…!”
“I’m joking. Let’s see… she’s probably taking a shower now, isn’t she…”
The jelly girl chuckled to herself, amused by the memory of Kim Cheonsu flustered by Han Seori’s teasing.
‘Han Seori must be bored’, she thought.
‘She’s not the type to joke around much, is she? Or is she?’
She wasn’t sure. Either way, the important thing was that Yang Hana had been assigned a room and had likely fallen asleep.
‘If that’s the case…’
‘I don’t need to bring food for them myself, do I?’
Given the jellies' intelligence, they should be able to retrieve food from the fridge on their own, right? With this thought, she grabbed a notebook rolling under her bed and a pen to draw instructions. On a blank page, she sketched a sequence:
A picture of a fridge.
A fridge with its door open.
Jellies taking food out of the open fridge and bouncing happily.
She showed the drawing to the jellies while waking Sosik, who had been lying dormant. Like children setting out on an adventure, the jellies excitedly prepared to leave the room.
Daesik climbed onto Jungsik like a princess mounting a steed, extending its tiny fist forward.
Jungsik wagged its tail, ready to sprint.
The jelly girl, watching the scene with satisfaction, added Sosik behind Daesik. Though Jungsik seemed slightly burdened, whether due to hunger or their combined weight, it floated along just fine.
At last, Daesik raised its fist again, and Jungsik dashed forward, dragging Sosik along the floor towards the kitchen. Sending the jellies on their way, the jelly girl wriggled around on the bed for what felt like a long time.
Eventually, she sensed something amiss and had no choice but to leave the bed and head to the kitchen herself.
‘Why haven’t they returned yet?’
The jelly girl wasn’t particularly concerned about the jellies encountering Yang Hana. After all, Yang Hana would soon be part of the “inner circle” like Kim Cheonsu and Han Seori, and she’d learn about them within a day or two anyway. What worried her more was…
‘The possibility that the jellies had made a mess of the kitchen.’
Imagining the chaos, the jelly girl began to regret her decision.
‘They’re just jellies, after all. As smart as they are, they’re still jellies. Eating food with tentacles and bare bodies… of course, they could cause trouble. They might even eat the fridge itself.’
‘This is going to be a problem.’
Her footsteps quickened as she approached the kitchen, hoping for the best. The kitchen lights were off, adding to her anxiety. Couldn’t they turn on the lights? Or had they eaten the lightbulbs, too?
She rushed into the kitchen and peeked inside. What she saw was bizarre.
Yang Hana—the largest figure in sight—lay on the floor. Her face was smeared with sticky, opaque jelly, and she appeared unconscious. Alarmed, the jelly girl hurried over and carefully extended a jelly tendril to check on her. Fortunately, Yang Hana seemed alive.
Though the jelly girl couldn’t determine exactly what had happened, one thing was clear: if Yang Hana had seen the jellies…
‘The first impression would be terrible.’
After confirming Yang Hana’s condition, the jelly girl turned her attention to the culprits. She found the fridge door wide open. Inside, the jellies were gathered, happily sharing food.
‘How could they act so nonchalantly after leaving someone in that state? I mean, she’s not dead, but still…’
Unable to sigh, the jelly girl exhaled a puff of jelly and closed the fridge door. While this didn’t solve the problem, it did feel satisfying to remove the mess from sight.
‘For now, the jellies are dealt with.’
Placing a hand on her forehead, she turned back to Yang Hana and grabbed her by the ankle. Since Yang Hana was supposed to stay in Kim Cheonsu’s room, she thought, ‘If I drag her there and leave her on the floor, she’ll just think she fell off the bed.’
‘But what if she wakes up while I’m dragging her?’
That would be annoying. After some thought, she let go of Yang Hana’s ankle and came up with an idea.
‘Kim Cheonsu wants to come to the kitchen. Kim Cheonsu wants to come to the kitchen.’
She repeated this mantra in her mind. Though she didn’t like using this ability, she rationalized that mastering it would prevent accidents. Soon enough…
“What the heck is this?”
Kim Cheonsu appeared in the kitchen, bundled up in pajamas and layers of outerwear. His eyes widened in shock as he saw Yang Hana. After confirming she was safe, he turned to the jelly girl with a stern gaze that seemed to ask, “Was this your doing?”
The jelly girl frantically shook her head, denying it. Feeling wronged, she opened the fridge to reveal the jellies with their bellies full of floating food before quickly closing it again.
“Why are they in the fridge?”
Feigning innocence, the jelly girl shrugged. Kim Cheonsu let out a long sigh, picked up a cloth, and wiped Yang Hana’s face. Then, wearing a dissatisfied expression, he approached the jelly girl.
‘Why is he coming toward me all of a sudden?’
Kim Cheonsu lifted her up and gently placed her in the fridge with the other jellies. Holding the fridge door like a warden inspecting prisoners through a cell window, he said:
“This is the price for summoning me.”
Kim Cheonsu closed the door and felt strangely refreshed. Perhaps it was because he had bottled up so much frustration. Whatever the reason, he figured this much was justified.
‘After all, she’s fine outside, so the fridge shouldn’t be a problem. It’s more of a retreat than a punishment.’
It definitely wasn’t because he resented sleeping in the lounge. Nodding to himself, Kim Cheonsu carried the surprisingly light Yang Hana out of the kitchen. The kitchen seemed peaceful once more… for now.
