Chapter 746: Ranks
"I'm the captain of the elite squad, Daz!" A middle-aged man straightened his back and placed his fist on his chest to salute Nathan.
There were a total of nine people behind him, standing in the same position.
They looked tense, as though there was someone scary inspecting them.
Nathan smiled wryly, whispering, "This is…"
"Ahahaha. They are already aware of your identity, so it can't be helped." Sylvia let out a hollow laugh.
Nathan nodded his head and coughed to regain his composure. "Thank you for coming here even though it was on short notice. I'm Nathan."
"No. We're honored to have Master Nathan visit our humble place." Daz replied in the same upright but awkward tone.
Nathan waved his hands down while saying, "There's no need to be tense. I don't know if the vice commander has told you or not, but I come here for three things. I wish to listen to your opinions regarding the magic weapons, watch your training, and, if possible, observe your fight on the wall."
"Yes. It's our honor to fulfill the great master's wish."
Even elite knights couldn't really be arrogant in front of the summoners, let alone a summoner at Nathan's level, on top of him being the one giving them the strength.
It couldn't be helped if they acted like this.
Nathan smiled wryly. "Anyway, you can ignore me for now. I heard you're going on with your daily routine, so why not do it now? I will just watch from the side."
"Y-Yes, sir!"
The captain awkwardly led his team to do their training. Their movements were slower than usual because of him, but this was enough for Nathan.
"Is this going to be fine?" Sylvia worried that their stiffness would end up angering Nathan.
"It's fine. All I wish is to see it with my own eyes." Nathan smiled, assuring Sylvia that everything would be alright.
Selena, on the other hand, observed the knights carefully, wondering if their habits or training could be implemented even by a summoner. She didn't know much about the magic weapon, so she just let Nathan do what he wanted.
Besides, the ones receiving the magic weapons were elite knights. They were originally much stronger than normal knights, so there might be something different about them.
Meanwhile, Nathan asked, "How many elite knights does this place have? And how many magic weapons are there?"
"There are a total of 300 elite knights on this base. However, only 30 of them have received magic weapons."
"I see. We can't produce a lot of magic weapons after all. Even if we can create one hundred magic weapons a day for a whole month, you will only get 700 or 800 of them, which will be divided among all the elite knights in the kingdom. After all, we have to split them into four kingdoms." Nathan crossed his arms.
"Ah. Please don't misunderstand. We're not ungrateful. In fact, we're thankful that our base can receive such a precious item." Sylvia hurriedly corrected herself.
"I don't really mind people's opinions. As long as I do my part as a human, it's all good. Let others do their part and we're good. I don't care if they scorn me or anything in the process." Nathan chuckled, treating it as not a big deal.
"Thank you." Sylvia looked relieved. "As for the remaining 20 elite knights, they're going with the Sword Saint right now."
"I see." Nathan nodded. "Still, is it hard to differentiate the elite knights wielding magic weapons and the normal elite knights?"
"Well, I have heard a rumor about them changing their name. There is a decision to create a new rank called magic knight."
"Hoh? That's interesting." Nathan agreed with the idea. "Now that I think about it, what are the ranks of soldiers?"
"There are five official ranks for the soldiers in the Azilia Kingdom. They are trainees, recruits, soldiers, knights, and elite knights.
"As the name implies, trainees are soldiers in training. Rather than sending normal people who can't do anything, they are receiving basic education to fight against aliens.
"Once your level is sufficient, you will be recruited officially. However, these recruits are usually stationed in the rear as a reserve. They're learning about aliens and other stuff from behind.
"After seeing it a few times, they finally become official soldiers. The soldiers continue their training and racking up achievements, which gradually promote them to the level of a knight.
"Most of the time, knights are those who are able to go one-on-one against a proto-class alien.
"Once you are strong enough to be able to defeat a juvenile class alien in a group of three, you are usually bestowed the title of elite knights."
"I see." Nathan looked down. "Does that mean being sent to the front line is like an opportunity?"
"Yes. Once they become recruits, they are usually given two choices: either to go to the front line or stay behind for further training.
"Most people choose the former. If they go to the front line, there's a high chance they will fight against an alien. As a result, they have a higher chance of being promoted faster.
"The rank of soldiers is like the beginning of everything. All of them are striving to become a knight. You can differentiate the soldiers and the knights by looking at their armor.
"For the soldiers, they have rather dull-colored armor because they're using low-grade mass-produced armor.
"Once they become a knight, their armor is slightly shinier. They're able to personalize their own armor.
"As for elite knights, this is the highest honor one can achieve. Even if you retire, a lot of nobles would like to recruit you.
"However, thanks to the addition of magic weapons, there's a rumor about another rank beyond the elite knight."
"That's interesting." Nathan squinted his eyes. "Maybe, not just one rank. Should I suggest the same thing? A magic knight for those with a standardized magic weapon and an elite magic knight for those with a personalized magic weapon?"
What do you think?
