Chapter 201 - 201 195 The Danger Isnt Over Yet
Chapter 201: Chapter 195: The Danger Isn’t Over Yet Chapter 201: Chapter 195: The Danger Isn’t Over Yet Once darkness fell, it became even more difficult to search within the dense forest.
Ci Ye was somewhat anxious. Even though he had managed to contact Tong Hegan, he couldn’t bring people over that quickly.
At this moment, he had no idea where the members of the New City Sect were.
Er Gui voiced from the side, “I refuse to believe that they won’t start a fire tonight.”
In such a chilly night, if they didn’t kindle some fire to rest, they would be hard-pressed to bear the cold.
A disciple stepped forward and said, “Exactly, they are sure to set up a fire tonight. Once they do, our Winged Dragon will surely spot it. As long as there are sparks, we’ll know their location.”
Ci Ye found reason in this. He suddenly heaved a sigh of relief and said, “Indeed, we’ll walk a bit more before resting.”
Although they occasionally found leaves imprinted with symbols, there weren’t such leaves all along the way. More so, they had no clue when these people had passed from this place, so they didn’t know how far the people from New City Sect were from them at this moment. The symbol-tinted leaves seemed to become fewer.
Er Gui said, “The mountain is vast. They aren’t immortals. Although we aren’t ensnared, we can’t walk too fast either just like them. I believe they are still in the mountains. There’s no need to worry.”
Ci Ye ordered, “You all continue looking for the symbol-tinted leaves.”
The sky was already dim, and in less than an hour, it would be entirely dark.
Ling’er and her companions had been travelling for a whole day. Everybody was extremely exhausted. The hardships of spending a day in these woods after a night of hardship was extremely difficult and agonizing. Ling’er wondered if they had any mosquito nets to cover herself completely. She hated those buzzing insects.
These mosquitoes were rather vile, seizing every opportunity to suck their blood.
Even though they had medicinal herbs with them, they were still very uncomfortable. It kept them awake at night. If one could sleep for three hours in a night, it would be considered a blessing. She had never endured such hardships before in her life. Now, she regretted her decision to venture into these woods. She started to question whether those guys deliberately egged her on so that she would defiantly charge in. If they hadn’t looked down on girls like her, maybe she wouldn’t have agreed to come in, wouldn’t have undergone such torment.
But now it was too late. All she could do was bear it by herself.
A few blisters appeared on her arm.
“Ling’er, how are you doing?” Can Mo asked.
Many disciples were heavily troubled by these mosquitoes.
Ling’er smiled, “I’m fine, don’t worry, I can hold on.” At this moment, crying wouldn’t help. She had to endure. She didn’t want to be ridiculed by that guy.
A disciple ran back and announced, “We’ve found a cave ahead.”
“A cave, really?” Ling’er almost jumped up in joy. Once they found the cave, they could set a fire tonight.
“Yes, just up ahead.”
“Is the cave far?”
“Not far, it’s large enough for all three hundred of us to fit in.”
The news excited Ling’er even more. She said, “I can’t bear another night in this chilling cold. This is great, or else, I would have broken down.”
Can Mo chuckled as if he had finally understood Ling’er’s sentiments.
Ling’er said, “Don’t make fun of me. The hardships I’ve endured in my life altogether do not compare to the last few days.”
Can Mo asked, “Do you regret it incredibly?”
“I did regret it. But, I can’t let that guy belittle me.”
Upon listening, Can Mo chuckled.
“Can we hunt for food, roast it? The dried beef jerky isn’t tasty at all,” Ling’er suggested.
“Sure, we’ll do as you say. Tonight, we’ll prepare a nice meal for everyone,” replied Can Mo.
“That’s great!” Ling’er was ecstatic.
“I noticed that you haven’t eaten much these past few days.”
“I really don’t have an appetite. But now I am very hungry. I just want a nice warm meal, a good night’s sleep, that’s enough. I don’t want to fight anymore. Lack of sleep is making me hallucinate. I can’t differentiate between night and day. These days feel incredibly long.”
Can Mo just chuckled again.
Ling’er questioned again, “Have we spotted anyone following us yet?”
“There should be people trailing us but we don’t know their exact position.”
“Are you saying this based on your sixth sense?”
Can Mo replied, “No, look up. There are numerous Winged Dragons hovering in the sky. But today the mist is heavy and the forest is dense. They won’t discover us that easily. If there were no one tailing us, there wouldn’t be so many Winged Dragons flying above us.”
“You’re right, this means they know we’ve descended from the left side of the mountain.”
“But I think figuring out how far they are from us won’t be too difficult.”
“You want to check where the fires are tonight, right?”
“Exactly, as long as I spot a fire, I can determine their location. I could even figure out how many of them there are.”
“Oh, that’s great, as long as they light a fire.”
“I don’t think they won’t. They’re having a harder time than us. They’re even less equipped to endure this freezing cold.”
“Okay, I believe you. I can’t take it anymore. I need to head back to the cave, get warm, and rest. If this continues, I fear my head might explode.”
Can Mo chuckled at these words.
“I’m serious. I feel like my eyes are going numb, and I’m turning more and more into a wooden doll. I might look like I’m walking around, but I’m actually numb. I’m like a walking corpse, really.”
Can Mo laughed again, saying, “Alright, you rest easy. I got this.”
“You’d better let our disciples rest properly too. Without stamina, it’ll be pretty hard to get out of these godforsaken mountains.”
Can Mo nodded in agreement,
They did indeed find a cave. It was very secretive, located near a small pond, beneath a cliff.
Inside was very clean. In the canyon, Ling’er was able to wash her face properly,
upon entering the cave she felt somewhat clearer and at ease, although just a bit better overall.
Now they could find a spot to rest properly as the inside was naturally formed.
Ling’er didn’t have the energy to appreciate the cave’s beauty. All she wanted was to lie down for a while and eat something.
They had caught a wild pig and other small game–enough for all of them to eat.
Ling’er glanced over, figuring it would take at least four hours to roast the meat thoroughly, and said, “Wake me when it’s ready.”
Night fell, and Ye Chen came down from the mountaintop, reaching the foot of the mountain. However, he found no traces of them. Yet, he did discover some activity that he believed to have been left by Ci Ye. They surely hadn’t expected Ye Chen to bring people and circle back. However, they didn’t see any sign of Ci Ye at the top of the mountain, which further strengthened the belief they descended. These traces should be theirs.
Had it been Can Mo, he would have been especially careful. They wouldn’t have left such obvious traces and wouldn’t act so recklessly to attract attention. Hence, Ye Chen believed these traces were left by Ci Ye’s group.
Whether or not they had found Can Mo and his group, Ye Chen speculated. If they had not discovered them, they wouldn’t have come down the mountain. Despite this, they probably knew that Can Mo came down the left side of the mountain. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have descended. Given what Ye Chen knew about Ci Ye, in rescuing Yang Jing, Ci Ye would definitely follow this course of action.
Were they being followed? Ye Chen didn’t know, but he was getting worried. Now, he had no clue where Ci Ye and his men were.
He was worried whether his carrier pigeon message had been received.
“We should take a rest now,” Li Mo approached him and said.
Ye Chen nodded and looked around, saying, “Okay, I’m tired too. We wouldn’t make it out, even if we continued. By the time we run into them, we probably wouldn’t have the stamina to face them.”
Li Mo nodded.
“Let’s get something to eat.” Ye Chen looked around. There was a cliff nearby. Resting here for the night should be fine. He said, “Let’s rest over there.”
Li Mo then said, “As soon as it gets dark, we’ll quickly find where they are.”
In the mountain, there were only disciples from the New City Sect and Ci Ye’s people. They should be able to spot the firelight by nightfall, which should help them locate the others.
“Fine, let’s get some food. I need to wash myself,” Ye Chen headed to the stream.
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle things here.”
“That Da Gui, he didn’t follow, did he?”
“Don’t worry, he isn’t that excited. I guess he’s probably had enough.”
“Not just them who’ve had enough, even I am at my limit. If it wasn’t for the fear that they might meet with accidents, I wouldn’t choose to climb over.”
“The leader should be someone who can endure hardship.”
Ye Chen chuckled at this, saying, “Well, not anymore. I’m not as resilient as I used to be, too old to be adventuring.”
“From the sound of you, you sound like some old man in his seventies or eighties.”
Ye Chen laughed again, continuing to march forward.
The darkness of the night descended quickly, a few degrees of tranquility around. Even hunts seemed to run out of energy, retreating back into the woods.
Ye Chen returned to the cliff, where the others had already set up a large fire. The Winged Dragon was flying in front, so it wouldn’t come this way. It wasn’t fear that deterred him. He didn’t want to draw the attention of others. If they were drawn over here, it would spell danger.
“Get the food cooked quickly. If you spot their traces, let me know immediately.”
What do you think?
