Chapter 25 - 25 23 A Quiet Person
Chapter 25: Chapter 23: A Quiet Person Chapter 25: Chapter 23: A Quiet Person On the day of fishing, the weather was good. The sun was shining brightly on the lakeside promenade.
After some preparation, Yu Qing also joined, but she wasn’t interested in fishing. She sat on a long bench, engrossed in a book.
Ren Haotian said, “Young Master Ze, you might as well give up fishing and accompany Qing’er.”
Su Zhanze glanced back and saw Guo Yuqing sitting alone, reading a book.
Jiang Shizi and two other girls were busy cooking.
Ye Chen sat on the lakeside grass in a semi-resting state. He didn’t seem particularly interested in fishing. He laid down with a book covering his face, looking as though he had fallen asleep.
Yuan Jingxing came over, gave him a nudge, and asked, “Did you go out last night to play the charming thief?”
The book fell to the ground. Ye Chen shook his head.
“You’ve been here for a while now. Do you feel acclimated?” Yuan Jingxing handed him a freshly roasted fish.
Ye Chen nodded and replied, “It’s alright.”
“I feel like you seem a bit spiritless.”
“Me? Not at all.”
“As brothers, if there’s anything bothering you, feel free to share it.”
“Really, there’s nothing wrong.” He was thinking of his mother’s words.
“Our Young Master Ze takes good care of people. He won’t treat you unfairly.”
“Yes, I never said that Young Master Ze isn’t good.”
“If there’s any issue, feel free to bring it up.”
“It’s not really an issue, I just feel like I can’t catch up to you all. Being a country bumpkin, I don’t know how to lessen the gap between us.”
“Hey, no need for these kind of thoughts. Just take your time, this is just the start and you’re certainly diligent”
Ye Chen chuckled, “I’m afraid I may never get the chance to become a true disciple of the Immortal City.”
“Take it easy, follow us and you will surely become a disciple of the Immortal City,” Jingxing stated.
Ye Chen nodded in agreement.
“You aren’t still thinking of someone back in your village, unable to forget, are you?”
“Haha, you do know how to tease.” Ye Chen replied.
Jingxing laughed, “If there truly is someone, you could directly invite her over.”
“There isn’t anyone. We people from the countryside are quite simple, we don’t have such complexities.” After being foolish once with Jiang Shizi, he wouldn’t survive another.
“What do you mean, ‘quite simple’?”
“There’s just no extra time to think about such things.”
“Hey, you need to strike a balance between work and leisure. Otherwise, it will be too dull.”
“Right. Just like you guys, everyone has their own affairs.”
Suddenly, a cicada started its loud humming. If his memory served him right, it was the first time he heard a cicada’s call this year. Hearing the noise instantly caught Ye Chen’s attention, he exclaimed, “Oh! The cicadas are already singing! Summer is about to start!”
“Does it remind you of a memory involving you and a girl from your village?”
“Nonsense, the cicada’s singing simply means that summer is coming. I didn’t expect it to arrive so soon.”
“Did something memorable happen during the summer? Do share.”
“Haha, you do enjoy teasing.” Ye Chen thought to himself, if these guys found out about Little Hua, they’d tease him non-stop.
“Why don’t you think about these complexities?”
“Unlike you, our youth is not entirely consumed by such thoughts.”
“Most of you guys simply follow your parents’ arrangements.”
“You could say that, most of us do follow that path.” Ye Chen laid back down, looking up at the blue and white sky. A tree’s shadow fell on his face, a familiar sight. He fell into a brief trance, recalling some past events.
Zhan Ze walked up toward Yu Qing, holding a freshly roasted fish in his hand. He asked, “What book are you reading so intently?”
Yu Qing looked up and smiled, “Just browsing. There’s no particular book I fancy.”
“I thought you’d like fishing.”
Yu Qing glanced at the lake and said, “I do. I quite enjoy this atmosphere.”
“But you’ve been reading this whole time.”
“Uh huh, I’m a bit lazy, though I enjoy fishing. I just don’t want to get my hands dirty.” Qing’er put down her book, leaned against a post, and made herself comfortable.
“You should have a taste of the roasted fish.”
“Did you make it?”
Zhan Ze slightly smirked.
Yu Qing promptly took a bite and nodded, “It tastes good.”
“You’ve not even tasted it yet.”
“One can tell from the smell. It’s definitely better than my cooking skills. My cooking is absolutely terrible.” After having a bite, Yu Qing spoke again, “It’s truly quite good. Who do you learn from?”
Zhan Ze pointed at Ye Chen on the lakeside, talking with Jingxing, “I learned from Ye Chen.”
“He’s from the countryside, isn’t he?”
“Yes, he likes to cook while living in the countryside.”
“Hmm, I’ve tasted his cooking on the first day. Indeed, he has a knack for it. He could pursue a career in this field.”
“As a chef?”
“What’s wrong with being a chef!”
Zhan Ze laughed and said, “He knows a lot.”
“Survival skills.”
Zhan Ze nodded, “Yes, exactly. That’s what he says too. Occasionally, he joins the villagers to go hunting in the mountains. It often takes him several days to return.”
“Life in the mountains must be tough.”
“That’s likely the case, otherwise he wouldn’t be so tan.”
“I didn’t hear about him in the past.”
“Yes, you are not alone. Even I just found out about him. I didn’t even know my father had a Junior Sister.”
Yu Qing chuckled lightly.
“Is the living arrangement with Shizi fine?” It seemed like the conversation could only revolve around these trivial matters.
“It’s alright, not much different from my home. However, I’m afraid I might cause some inconvenience to her in the coming days.”
“If you’re concerned about this, I can arrange for you a different courtyard so you won’t disturb her.”
“No need. Besides, I won’t stay too long. Why go to such trouble! In her courtyard, we’ll be together and it’ll be lively.”
Zhan Ze suddenly became anxious and asked, “Are you leaving?”
“Not so soon, I still want to watch the martial arts tournament.”
Zhan Ze relaxed a bit.
Yu Qing’s eyes met his and she smiled slightly, saying, “Can you promise me something?”
“What is it, just tell me.”
“Don’t confront Haoyu because of me.”
“No, I won’t.”
“I’m still a little worried, afraid that I’ll affect your relationship. I really don’t want to see you two fighting because of me!”
“Don’t worry about this,” Zhan Ze reassured her.
“We’re all brothers. That night, somebody even set off fireworks. I heard a girl was injured.”
Zhan Ze quickly assured her, “I’ve checked. It’s not a big issue.”
“As long as it’s not serious. But if something major happened, I would be terribly remorseful. You understand what I mean, right?” Yu Qing asked.
Zhan Ze nodded, “Rest assured, as long as he doesn’t provoke me, I won’t provoke him.”
“Hmm, minor squabbles among brothers are common. But remember, many major issues often start from minor squabbles.”
Zhan Ze nodded in agreement.
“The martial arts tournament is coming up soon. How is your preparation? Do you plan to showcase your skills in this event?”
Zhan Ze chuckled, “Don’t make fun of my mediocre skills.”
“You will show off your skills, won’t you?”
“I’m afraid I’ll be the laughing stock.”
“Hehe, don’t be modest. I won’t laugh at you. I’m not competent myself; how could I possibly make fun of you?”
“Are you participating?”
“My skills are truly mediocre. I might get knocked down in a few moves. Perhaps, it’s better not to compete.”
Zhan Ze chuckled silently at this.
“Hear that? The cicada is calling again.” Yu Qing seemed to remember something.
“Yeah, it must be the first song of the year.”
“It seems like summer is fast approaching. We barely witnessed spring, and now summer is upon us. Time really flies.”
“Shall we climb a mountain tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow?” Yu Qing appeared puzzled.
“Do you have plans tomorrow?”
“I don’t have any.”
“I haven’t hiked for quite some time. This season is perfect for mountain climbing.”
“Yes, indeed. When all things revive in spring, it is definitely the best season.”
“Let’s be active. There’s nothing else to do here anyway.”
“Sure!” Yu Qing immediately agreed.
Zhan Ze felt joyous upon hearing it. If it wasn’t for his self-control, he would have jumped up in exuberance.
“Then, I will prepare for it tomorrow.” Young Master Ze said.
“Alright. Do I need to prepare anything else?” It’s also been a while since Yu Qing scaled a mountain.
“No need, I will prepare the food. Just be on time.”
“What time are we setting off?”
“Early. We can also watch the sunrise.”
After pondering for a moment, Yu Qing said, “It’s been a long time since I watched a sunrise.”
“Then let’s set off early.” Zhan Ze was already bubbling with excitement, like a blooming flower, behaving like a child.
“Are you going to eat more fish? If not, I won’t grill it anymore.” Bi Chun, who was responsible for grilling, said.
Jiang Shizi said, “You can take a break. If we want more later, we’ll ask you to grill.”
Zhan Ze announced, “Listen up everyone, we’re going mountain climbing tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, mountain climbing, what time?” Yuan Jingxing asked.
“We’re climbing to the top to watch the sunrise, early in the morning.”
“Then I have to get up very early. I was thinking of enjoying a nice sleep-in during the break.”
Ren Haotian said, “Your ‘sleep-in’ has lasted from winter till now. Even insects that hibernate in winter are already up and foraging.”
Jiang Shizi laughed, “He is our little sleepy bug.”
“You’re no better than me.”
“Remember, we’re going up to watch the sunrise, so we need to leave early,” Zhan Ze reiterated.
Ren Haotian said, “I only know that this is an excellent season for sleeping.”
“Stop thinking about sleeping. Do something meaningful,” Zhan Ze chided.
“I’m doing meaningful things every day, trying to figure out how to rescue Little Xiang.”
Yuan Jingxing coldly chuckled, “Then we should prepare well. We may not come down from the mountain until noon.”
Zhan Ze nodded, “Yes, probably not until evening.”
Ye Chen looked on as Yuan Jingxing said, “Chen, you’ve always wanted to venture into the mountains! Now, you have the opportunity.”
Ye Chen resumed reading.
The cicada’s song echoed again and again, as if it were terrified that others wouldn’t know summer was nearing, hence it shouted with all its might.
There were several boats spinning around on the lake,
“Do you want to sail around the lake?” Zhan Ze asked.
Yu Qing looked over, saying, “Wouldn’t it be too sunny? I’d rather sit here, read in peace and not make a fuss.”
Zhan Ze looked up at the sky, feeling it was indeed a bit sunnier than usual, he nodded and said, “Well, maybe next time.”
What do you think?
