Chapter 242: Chapter 138: City in the Mountains
The electric car moved forward, and Yan Fei, who was on the car, observed the surroundings while using the Auxiliary Brain to build a model of the cave in the database. From the outside, the cave looked unimpressive, but who knew there would be such a vast and expansive world within. Originally, this interconnected cave system was formed naturally, but it was later artificially expanded and repaired to become the colossal scale it was now.
Yan Fei was constantly connected to his Drone Avatar, and by measuring the position and distance between his actual body and the Drone Avatar, he could determine his current location. Therefore, in the database of the Auxiliary Brain, any place Yan Fei passed would automatically appear in the cave model. The whole process was like the fog of war in a game map; as Yan Fei moved, the fog automatically dispersed, allowing him to see his position.
In the cave model, the Auxiliary Brain also automatically marked various data, including the direction of the cave’s extension, length, altitude, and even the distance to the mountain outside, all of which were detailed. With this model and the data, Yan Fei could accurately know his precise position inside the cave, avoid getting lost, and greatly facilitate his upcoming actions.
By this time, Yan Fei was pretty sure that this was the Headquarters of the Assassin Sect. Apart from the Assassin Sect, no one else had the strength to construct such an immense mountain cave here. Knowing he had found the right place, he became even more cautious.
The electric car swiftly traversed the tunnel, which was very straight and flat at the beginning, but after turning a corner, it became winding and twisty. Judging by the walls of the cave, it was clear that it was originally a natural cave that the Assassin Sect had built upon, which had led to its current massive scale.
After several turns and changes in elevation and due to poor lighting inside the cave, Yan Fei’s sense of direction had gradually disappeared. If it had been anyone else, they would have lost their way by now. But with the guidance of the Auxiliary Brain’s model, Yan Fei knew exactly where he was, what direction he was facing, and the distance from the external mountain. He observed the passage he had just passed through and noticed several thick metal doors with Heavy Machine Guns positioned next to them. Under such a fire blockade, combined with the indestructible metal doors, it would be very hard for any enemies to breach the cave.
After driving for more than twenty minutes, navigating many twists and turns, climbs and descents, the electric car finally stopped at the end of the tunnel. What appeared in front of Yan Fei was a huge cave with a large parking lot in the middle that had several electric cars parked inside.
In front of the cave, there were about a dozen Black-Robed Warriors guarding the area, with four large elevators embedded in the cliff behind them. Besides these, there were no other exits. As soon as they saw the incoming electric car, the warriors immediately approached to inquire. The leader of the masked armed personnel revealed his face, explained a few words, and the Black-Robed Warriors waved them through, activating the elevator behind them.
Led by the armored group’s leader, they entered one of the elevators which had no floor numbers, just simple buttons for up, down, open, and close. The leader pressed the up button, the elevator doors automatically closed, and they began to ascend.
To Yan Fei’s senses, the elevator seemed to ascend for a long time, the exact distance unknown. According to the Auxiliary Brain’s model, the elevator kept rising until it had ascended three hundred and forty meters before stopping. When the elevator came to a halt, Yan Fei stepped out and found himself in an enormous cave.
This cave was like a commercial square in a human city; although not very large, the square was bustling with people, including carefree children, women veiled in black, and businessmen selling goods—they all came together to form a lively market scene.
The square was connected by several roads, with people coming and going. From Yan Fei’s viewpoint, he could vaguely see houses at the end of the roads, although he had no idea how deep they ran. Just seeing the external scale allowed one to imagine the enormity of the space inside.
Suspended right in the middle of the cave’s ceiling was a huge flag that Yan Fei was very familiar with, the flag of the Assassin Sect. Seeing this flag, Yan Fei knew he was in the right place, the very headquarters of the Assassin Sect.
This space was inside the mountain, lit by electricity from an unknown source, which made the schedule inside a bit chaotic. While it was the early hours of the morning outside and everyone had started resting, inside was a scene of bustling activity.
Looking at this sprawling underground city, Yan Fei marveled in his heart. To build such a city within the mountain must have taken tremendous effort and resources, probably only a power like the Assassin Sect with a thousand-year legacy had the time and capability to accomplish it. While the city heavily utilized the original natural caves, the fact that such a monumental task was achieved on that basis was almost inconceivable.
Yan Fei was shocked by the scale of this city within the mountains, but the other masked armed warriors seemed quite accustomed to this view, displaying no sign of surprise. Only the children nearby exhibited excitement when they saw the masked warriors returning from their tasks, cheering and shouting loudly to express their utmost respect. The masked women also respectfully bowed to the warriors—it seemed that those returning from their tasks were quite popular within the Assassin Sect.
However, the masked armed warriors did not respond to the salutes of the children and women, acting as if such adulation was nothing new. Led by the head of the masked warriors, the group continued on their way. After passing through the bustling square, they entered a corridor with rooms carved out of the stone walls. Over the stone doors hung the Assassin Sect’s banners, and Arabic inscriptions labeled them as “training rooms.”
As Yan Fei walked along, he heard the sounds of strenuous Kung Fu practice from some of the stone rooms, while others resonated with the sounds of modern firearms being used. And then, there were rooms from which occasional screams could be heard, along with loud scolding; it was unclear what exactly was happening inside.
The masked warriors showed no emotional reaction to these noises. Yang Wanlin, caught in their midst, became visibly anxious upon hearing the screams, his heart pounding with fear. In stark contrast, the sturdy middle-aged man remained composed, without any trace of negativity, even helping Yang Wanlin to keep walking forward.
After passing the training rooms, the group found themselves facing a dead end. In front of them stood a sheer cliff, but there were two openings carved out of it, leading to an upward-sloping cableway. At the entrance, a cable car was stationed, guarded by Black Robe Warriors who were more stringently posted than at previous checkpoints—indicating the significance of the destination beyond the cableway.
Following a negotiation by the lead masked warrior and a phone call made in an enclosed room, they were finally cleared to board the cableway car. Then, the cableway activated and began transporting them upward.
Yan Fei observed the clearly man-made marks along the side of the cableway, finding it almost unbelievable. He hadn’t expected the terrain of this mountain city to be so complex. Using electric cars and elevators, they had already ascended over eight hundred meters in altitude, and now, this cableway was continuing to carry them upwards. He wondered how the Assassin Sect had discovered this natural cave system in the mountain and transformed it into a city.
The cableway was extraordinarily long; the cable car traveled through the air for more than half an hour before reaching the upper terminal. His Auxiliary Brain had calculated that they had ascended another 2000 meters. Counting from where Yan Fei first entered the cave, he had now climbed 2800 meters above his original altitude. With the original height of the cave, Yan Fei was now situated at an altitude of 3500 meters.
According to the model in the Auxiliary Brain, Yan Fei had left the towering Daxue Mountain behind, now having ascended along an incline to the highest peak of the adjacent mountain range. The Auxiliary Brain’s data indicated he was now less than two hundred meters from the summit of that peak.
Upon reaching this height, Yan Fei felt the cold, but with his current strength, the severity of the chill had no effect on him. The rest of the masked armed personnel, including Yang Wanlin, shivered slightly from the cold, except for the solid middle-aged man, who displayed no unusual reaction.
The terminal point of the cableway was still a vast square, seemingly very open. There were fully armed Black Robe Warriors patrolling the area, and a few bunkers fitted with heavy weaponry were nearby. Due to the sharp drop in temperature, snow blanketed the square. Illuminated by the lights, the snow reflected brightly, creating a world of white everywhere.
Yan Fei couldn’t help but feel amazement; he had never imagined that such a snowy world could exist within a mountain. He had known that the headquarters of the Assassin Sect were at the summit of Daxue Mountain, but he never thought that Daxue Mountain was not the exterior mountain but a city within the mountain. However, considering the altitude, it was not unreasonable to describe this place as the summit of Daxue Mountain, since it was only about two hundred meters below the actual summit.
The exterior peak of the mountain had no snow cover, yet the square inside the mountain was filled with snow. If Yan Fei had not entered the mountain himself, he couldn’t have fathomed that such a surreal and wondrous place existed in the world.
