Chapter 272: Chapter 154 Battlefield Reconnaissance
Yan Fei, though he severely injured Huo Shan, felt a tinge of regret for not being able to capture him. Yet he knew Huo Shan’s condition was grave, and it would be some time before he could threaten Yan Fei again. There was still time for Yan Fei to grow his strength until he could contend with Huo Shan. As soon as Huo Shan fled, Yan Fei controlled the drone and left the battlefield.
The drone had lost one of its wings and had crashed, leaving its main structure intact, but its exterior was battered and worn. It could only move forward slowly using its hovering capability, a far cry from its former speed and agility.
This was Syria, and enemies could be lurking anywhere, ready to strike at any moment, leaving the region fraught with danger. Yan Fei didn’t dare to let the drone fly too high, given its current condition and lack of ammunition. If it were spotted by others, it would surely become nothing more than a target, destined to be destroyed.
Consequently, the drone flew at a low altitude, about a hundred meters off the ground. After traveling thirty kilometers and distancing itself from Duan Hongye and the members of the China Special Duties Unit, a huge sand dune appeared in front of it. Yan Fei operated the Quantum Radar to scan the dune and the nearby terrain, finding the location remarkably secluded, with no sign of human activity within a twenty-kilometer radius. The drone dipped its nose, surrendering to gravity and diving toward the ground. It then tilted and crashed into the sand dune, concealing itself within.
Thanks to the precise calculations of the Auxiliary Brain, once the drone settled into the sand dune and ceased movement, it was perfectly concealed within, with no indication from the outside of a massive drone hidden beneath. Moreover, the cockpit where Yan Fei was located was only about 20 centimeters from the surface. With a simple push of the cockpit door, he could easily crawl out from inside the dune, avoiding entrapment. Additionally, the position allowed airflow, preventing Yan Fei from experiencing any breathing difficulties in the cockpit.
Having secured the drone’s hiding place, Yan Fei finally breathed a sigh of relief. The night’s events were too unusual and perilous. He had thought vanquishing the Assassin Sect would complete his mission, unaware that this was just the start of the chaos. He met Sun Yi from the Sun Family and underestimated him, which nearly resulted in his downfall. Then Huo Shan appeared, demonstrating the formidable strength of a god-level expert, and Yan Fei began to flee. With Huo Shan in pursuit and despite firing on full blast and exhausting every means, Yan Fei could not escape, almost meeting his end under Huo Shan’s onslaught. Eventually, the plot twisted, with Duan Hongye surprising both, inflicting serious damage on Huo Shan and once again saving Yan Fei’s life. Finally, Yan Fei and Duan Hongye tacitly cooperated to repel Huo Shan, leaving him incapacitated for the next two years and temporarily averting the life-and-death crisis Yan Fei faced.
The night’s happenings took Yan Fei by surprise; it was heart-stopping from the start, especially the latter experiences, which tested his will to survive. At the same time, it was an eye-opening encounter that revealed a few individuals in the world possessed inconceivably terrifying power to overturn common sense. With these insights, Yan Fei could approximate his position in the world and found new goals to strive for. He too wished to break the human limit, reach the divine realm, become a god-level expert, and join the ranks of those few.
But that wasn’t all; the various forces that emerged that night broadened Yan Fei’s horizons. Not only did he realize the power of ancient aristocratic families, but he also grasped the vast gulf between a god-level expert and an ordinary martial artist. The arrival of agents from the China Special Duties Unit even moved Yan Fei. Although the country had not spoken much about the incidents involving Lu Pingping and Liu Tingting, it had not ignored them. Instead, it covertly dispatched super experts to annihilate the Assassin Sect and even kill Huo Shan. The nation’s actions were sufficient to justify Yan Fei’s trust in his country.
Leaning back in the cockpit seat, Yan Fei thought about the night’s encounters, slowly feeling utterly exhausted. He had fought consecutive battles that evening, sustaining severe injuries multiple times. Had he not discovered the black sphere’s potent healing capabilities, he would probably be dead by now. Moreover, as the drone’s damage also affected Yan Fei’s own body, this invisible yet real injury was beyond the sphere’s swift healing ability. As a result, Yan Fei’s arm still felt numb, and his spiritual soul continued to ache from the tear.
Although Yan Fei utilized the mysterious energy of the black sphere to rapidly recover from injuries a few times, such healing did not come without cost. It had depleted his latent life force, meaning Yan Fei would face a reduced lifespan if he could not replenish what was lost.
Feeling weary, Yan Fei recognized this as a natural bodily response. However, instead of immediately falling asleep, he took out some precious Chinese medicinal materials from the Universal Space to compensate for the drain of his vitality. Then, Yan Fei activated the Quantum Radar once more to scan the surroundings of the dune and, seeing no other developments, tasked the Auxiliary Brain with guard duty before finally succumbing to sleep, restoring his strength.

In the hills of Syria at noon, under the scorching sun, a group of individuals clad in the yellow desert camouflage of the US Forces was conducting a site investigation where Yan Fei had fought the night before. Their security was ensured by a ring of American soldiers on the perimeter. Overhead, several F-15 Fighters patrolled the high altitude, with a number of fully-armed Apache helicopters circling below. Nearby, over a dozen main battle tanks and armored vehicles stood guard, flanked by several large military transport vehicles and cranes.
These individuals in yellow desert camouflage seemed to be researchers, inspecting the leftover traces of the previous night’s battle. Suddenly, someone discovered a silver wing buried in the sand and called others over. Working together, with the help of the transport and crane vehicles in the distance, they extracted the damaged silver wing from the sand.
“`
A researcher began inspecting the damaged wing, and someone beside asked, “Dr. Richard, this wing seems to be from our American F-15 fighter, right? It’s just the color seems a bit off…”
Dr. Richard, who was called by that name, set down the diagnostic instrument in his hand and said with some puzzlement, “George, I can confirm that this wing is from an F-15 fighter jet of ours, but what’s strange is that the data of this wing is about 20% larger than that of our F-15 fighter jets. Moreover, the material it is made from is not the one we’re familiar with for manufacturing the F-15 fighter, but a strange material we have never seen before.”
The one named George who had asked the question then said, “If it is 20% larger than the normal F-15 fighter’s wing, then it definitely isn’t an F-15. So what airplane’s wing is it? Could it be from the latest model of our American aircraft? Also, Dr. Richard, you are a renowned expert in materials science, can’t even you determine what material this wing is made from?”
Richard replied, “I don’t know either, maybe it really is a part of the latest American fighter jet! To know its exact composition and characteristics, we can only transport this wing back to our Oak Ridge National Laboratory in America and use the latest scientific equipment to figure out what material it was made from.”
George said, “Doctor, we rushed here right away to conduct an investigation at the request of the American military. Look at how severely damaged the scene is, over there are more than a hundred dead Middle Easterners, and there are some destroyed vehicles, a war must have taken place. But isn’t war a common occurrence here? Why would the military need experts from our research institutions to step in?”
Richard glanced at the American soldiers in the distance and whispered, “Do you see that collapsed cave over there? My friend just told me that they’ve found highly toxic nerve gas inside that cave, supposedly Russia’s ‘Novichok’ nerve gas. And it appears to be a settlement of considerable size, they’ve already found countless people inside killed by the nerve gas. Unfortunately, they dare not delve deeper inside to find out the specifics. For safety, they have already temporarily sealed off those caves.”
George said, “Even though ‘Novichok’ is a unique chemical weapon of Russia, it’s not like only Russia can produce it. To my knowledge, our American laboratories have once succeeded in manufacturing this kind of terrifying nerve agent. But who would release such a nerve agent in such a remote cave? Or was it a leak that occurred here? You know, these Middle Easterners look like they could be members of KB; it’s quite normal for them to have such chemical weapons!”
Richard remarked, “We are just assistants to the military; let’s just do our job well. This place looks very eerie, it’s better if we know less – we might end up locked up for life if we know too much.”
Instead of being scared, George excitedly said, “Doctor, don’t you think everything here looks like part of a conspiracy? The military must have conducted some inhumane experiments here, and now they want to cover up that experimental process. For example, that cave we found earlier, inside which we found two charred bodies and could tell from the remains and traces left behind that there had been a missile explosion. But the entrance of that cave is so winding, how could a missile possibly fly into it? Did someone carry the missile into the cave and then manually detonate it? Unfortunately, the fire that resulted from the missile explosion inside burned all the evidence. Aside from the two charred bodies, we haven’t been able to find any useful clues.”
Seeing the American soldiers looking over at them, Richard quickly said, “George, let’s stop talking about such pointless things. Look, the military soldiers over there are watching us. Let’s load this wing on a truck and take it back to America first!”
Under Richard’s command, a crane and a transport vehicle drove over, with the crane powering up to hoist the wing aboard the transport vehicle. Then the transport vehicle left the area, headed toward the nearby airport under the protection of the American soldiers, awaiting to be shipped back to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States for analysis using scientific equipment.
