Surgery Godfather

Chapter 265 - 0249: Family Matters

Chapter 265: Chapter 0249: Family Matters

At 8 o’clock the next morning, Fang Xiaoyun decisively gave her answer: she refused surgery and wanted to be discharged from the hospital.

Discharge from the hospital? Refusing the surgery?

Was she joking about something that concerned the rest of her life?

If she wanted to switch hospitals, that wasn’t a problem!

Having surgery in any hospital is still surgery. As long as the hospital has the required technical conditions, the illness can be cured.

However, if she was influenced to give up surgery, it would be a mistake, ensuring she would need a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

...

Some patients live in distrust of the legitimacy of hospitals and doctors, often swayed by some “miracle doctor,” and end up suffering both physically and financially.

Many TV stations nowadays have no bottom line. They broadcast many pharmaceutical commercials which are obviously scams, making many people, especially the elderly, their victims.

Yang Ping had seen an elderly person like this. Minor back pain due to exertion led him to take an X-ray at the hospital, which revealed lumbar spondylosis.

The doctor patiently explained: This was the manifestation of the geriatric degeneration of the lumbar spine, essentially the aging of the lumbar vertebrae. This spinal condition was not harmful unless it lead to nerve compression or symptoms and required no treatment. The vast majority of spinal conditions did not need treatment.

However, the elder man was anxious. He saw a TV advertisement and bought over twenty thousand yuan worth of medicine. He turned around and cursed at the doctor, labeling him a quack who couldn’t see the problem or even recognize spinal conditions. The doctor had merely brushed him off; the TV man had clearly stated the problem while the doctor had lied to him.

The doctor said, he had been scammed.

The man was outraged. He touted his worldly wisdom, saying he had traversed more bridges and eaten more salt than the doctor had rice. Could he be scammed so easily? The TV healer was nationally acclaimed, a hereditary imperial physician teaching on television, how could he be a scam?

No words could explain it!

The only option left was for the doctor to apologize: indeed, he was a quack. The doctor begged him not to consult him anymore and not to curse him. Now he had found a miracle doctor, he hoped he could quickly cure his disease.

After the shift, Yang Ping personally went to Fang Xiaoyun’s ward: “Are you considering switching to another hospital? If that’s the case, that’s all right as long as it’s a legitimate hospital with the requisite technical capabilities to cure your illness. But if you give up treatment or decide on conservative treatment, it’s absolutely wrong. You could potentially delay your treatment, likely resulting in spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair.”

“Doctor Yang, I…” Fang Xiaoyun’s eyes became even more swollen than before. It seemed that she had cried again last night. She seemed to have an unspeakable problem.

“If you trust me, you can tell me the real reason for why you want to be discharged from the hospital. Before you entered this hospital, none of us knew each other. However, since you have stepped into our hospital and sought our treatment, I have a responsibility for your illness. We should be comrades, with your illness being our common enemy. Would it be possible to explain?” Yang Ping looked at her, fearing that her youth would be wasted.

Fang Xiaoyun sighed: “Doctor Yang, I wish to have the surgery in another hospital. Thank you.”

Her eyes did not dare meet Yang Ping’s as she spoke, her voice somewhat wavering.

“If you’re looking at switching hospitals, also make sure to have the surgery promptly. If delayed, it could lead to permanent paralysis.” Yang Ping counselled to no avail.

She was a normal adult, capable of making decisions and taking responsibility for them. He had said all there was to be said and his conscience was clear. There are so many things in the world to manage; one cannot manage them all. It was enough to manage one’s own affairs and to do them well.

Sisi had already been sent to the Gamma Knife Operating Room; Yang Ping had a surgery to perform and so, couldn’t afford to spend too much time on this matter.

“You should think it over again–” Zhang Lin still wanted to try and persuade her.

Fang Xiaoyun shook her head, seemingly helpless and bitter. She took her cell phone and called a colleague to come and help her with the discharge procedures. Since she didn’t have strength in her legs, using crutches was too difficult.

By the time Yang Ping made it to the Gamma Knife Operating Room, Sisi was already lying on the operating table. Her upper clothes had been removed, covered only with a thin blanket. Because they were using the High-intensity Focused Ultrasound knife, no clothing could obstruct the procedure.

Since Yang Ping had mentioned that the process wouldn’t take long and would be over in half an hour, Liang Fatty administered Sisi with an intravenous general anesthetic and an oropharyngeal airway tube.

“Brother Ming, we are imposing on you again.” Song Zimo spoke to Brother Ming.

Brother Ming helped to position the patient: “Don’t mention it, I just wish you would come here every day and bring us some lively energy.”

His place was ordinarily so quiet, with only one or two patients with uterine myomas every few days. Moreover, patients with uterine myomas often had a lot of issues after the operation.

Brother Ming used to have some hair, but now he was completely bald. The patients were few, but the worries were many.

After one patient with uterine myomas received treatment, her abdominal skin was burned. Initially, they let her apply some burn ointment, thinking it wouldn’t be a serious issue. But soon, the area began to necrotize and break down, forming an ulcer. They changed the dressing several times over a long period, but it didn’t improve. It finally healed after a skin graft.

Some patients had residual uterine myomas after treatment, unlike surgical extraction that could cleanly cut them out. Moreover, some postoperative patients often had vaginal bleeding; these patients frequently came to argue with him. Brother Ming’s head was full of gray hairs over these issues.

He had now applied to go back to the ultrasound department as he didn’t want to continue with the Gamma Knife. He didn’t know whether it was due to his lack of technical skills or other reasons, but it seemed that he’d had very few smooth operations.

“Doctor Yang, I didn’t expect that you had studied the Gamma Knife.” Brother Ming made desultory conversation.

Yang Ping remained noncommittal. If he said he had studied it, it would be a blatant lie; if he said he hadn’t, well, if he hadn’t studied it, how could he operate on a patient? That would be irresponsible.

So, he just smiled and got on with his work.

He sat in front of the computer. The simulation function of the system space was incredibly powerful, accurately replicating the operation he wanted to simulate.

Not just the computer, mouse, and desk were identical, even the mousepad was the same. The copying ability was extremely powerful.

Therefore, he didn’t need to familiarize himself with anything and could start the operation directly.

Sisi’s anesthetic took effect and her position was adjusted properly. Brother Ming took off the covering blanket and helped position the ultrasound transducer against the location of the liver, adjusting the distance as well.

“This computer can be operated just with the mouse, see–” Brother Ming wanted to teach Yang Ping.

After all, he had only come once before, and that time he had only looked at some files and hadn’t actually operated the device. He later mentioned that he would bring a patient for him to practice on, but he had never come. @@novelbin@@

Before Brother Ming’s hand could touch the mouse, Yang Ping had already started to operate. He moved the mouse and controlled the movement of the ultrasound emitter based on the ultrasound image on the screen.

He had simulated this thousands of times in the system space, achieving the optimal data. Now, he just needed to repeatedly carry out the optimum operations he’d performed in the system space, setting everything up according to those parameters. The process was incredibly simple for him.

Moving the transmitter, adjusting the parameters, gathering the ultrasound, emitting it, watching the timing, then stopping. He repeated this process dozens of times until the surgery was complete.

That quick?

He seemed very experienced, as if he had performed many similar cases. He didn’t seem to need to think at all while setting the parameters. Brother Ming didn’t understand.

Brother Ming checked Sisi’s abdominal skin, and after a touch, confirmed there were no burns.

Processed so quickly, was it effective? Was the ultrasound emitted?

Brother Ming had some doubts. No one usually performs it this way.

“Immediately perform a liver MRI on Sisi, and then follow up exams on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 30th days after the surgery.”

It remained unclear whether the tumor had been hit properly or if there were any damages to the surrounding normal tissues. Only a follow-up MRI, compared with the pre-surgery MRI, would clarify this.

“Checkup now?”

“Now!”

Turns out, he was really skilled with the Gamma Knife. He wasn’t just bluffing. Song Zimo was there, originally thinking that it would take a long time – at least adjusting the direction, distance, and other parameters. But Yang Ping got it right in one go, making direct attacks, dozens of times.

Does Yang Ping really have that much confidence?

A nurse from outside the Gamma Knife operating room entered and said, “There’s a patient’s family member waiting for Doctor Yang outside.”

“A patient’s family member is looking for me. You guys take Sisi to do the MRI, and I’ll look at the MRI results when I get back to the department.” Yang Ping followed the nurse to the door and indeed, a patient’s family member was waiting.

A woman in her twenties saw Yang Ping and said, “Doctor Yang, I’m Fang Xiaoyun’s colleague. She is not going to be discharged anymore. Could you please arrange her surgery as soon as possible?”

“What exactly is going on?” Yang Ping asked

The girl said, “That silly girl, she came to the hospital yesterday specifically for surgery. But last night, her parents called and asked her not to spend the money, but to send it back home for her brother’s house purchase.”

What a mess?

What kind of parents are these? Even if their daughter might become paralyzed, they still wanted to keep the money for their son’s house purchase. Wasn’t their daughter human?

“Doctor Yang, please help her. I’ve persuaded her to stay in hospital for surgery. Can you arrange it urgently? She’s really pitiful.” The girl was very upset.

“Has she eaten breakfast?”

“Not yet.”

“Tell her not to eat or drink anything. We’ll perform the surgery as an emergency.”

Yang Ping immediately called Zhang Lin and asked him to arrange Fang Xiaoyun’s surgery.

“Let’s go back and see her!”

Yang Ping knew there was something more going on with this situation, but he didn’t know it was this dire.

Fang Xiaoyun’s colleague also followed Yang Ping back to the Orthopedics ward where a huge commotion was taking place. Even the security guards had been called.

“What’s happening?” Yang Ping asked the incoming nurse.

Now that Director Han had handed over Orthopedics to him, he had to take up the responsibility.

“The family member of the patient in bed number 6 just came by, causing a commotion in the ward! The patient’s family member is arguing with the patient.”

Upon hearing the commotion inside, Fang Xiaoyun’s colleague asked, “Her mother is here. How did she get here so fast?”

“You white-eyed wolf, I raised you for over twenty years, and this is how you repay me. Your brother has already paid the deposit for his house, and now it’s time to pay the rest. I asked you to send money home, but you refused. Good thing I followed you here. What are you lying in the hospital pretending to be sick for? Is there any need? Explain it to me.”

“Mom, I’m seriously ill. I need surgery, otherwise, I’ll be paralyzed.”

Fang Xiaoyun’s colleague ran into the ward, followed by Yang Ping. A middle-aged woman was scolding Fang Xiaoyun, her spit flying all over as she jabbed her finger towards her daughter. Two security guards were standing between them to prevent any physical conflict.

“If there are issues, discuss them outside. You can’t make a scene in the ward. If you continue, I’ll call the police.” the security guard warned.

This woman should be Fang Xiaoyun’s mother. She was in her forties, was wearing makeup, and dressed stylishly. Around her neck, a thick gold necklace was visible.

“Call the police, go ahead. None of your goddamn business!”

Yang Ping frowned at her outburst. Even for a woman, she was foul-mouthed, like a shrew. She was swearing and jumping around, her finger almost jabbing the guard in his face.

Fang Xiaoyun’s colleague stood in front of Fang Xiaoyun, “What are you doing? What kind of mother are you? She is sick and needs to have surgery, otherwise, she’ll become paralyzed.”

“She’s pretending to be sick. You think I don’t know? It’s been a week since the payday this month and she hasn’t sent home a penny. I knew something was wrong. Yesterday when I called you, I was already downstairs at the hospital.” The shrew spoke through gritted teeth, jumping with every word.

“Call the police, call the police, she’s disrupting the ward order. Get her out and don’t let her come in again.” Yang Ping ordered the security guards.

The security guards at Sanbo Hospital were efficient. Two guards immediately grabbed one of her arms each and forcibly dragged her out.

Fang Xiaoyun was sobbing at the head of her bed.
