Chapter 14 – The secret of cultivating immortality, it turns out we were together
"The spiritual energy of heaven and earth, when sensed, connects the two realms and enters the body..."
Chen Xun continued to read, his mouth gaping wider and wider, wanting to blurt out two words but hesitating, because each subsequent sentence elevated his excitement even further.
He swallowed hard, his eyes wide with shock, and he couldn't help but exclaim, "Awesome!"
"Moo? Moo!" Black Bull was startled into sitting up, turning his bovine head towards the "Qi Cultivation Manual" with confusion.
"Bull, it's a cultivation technique!"
Chen Xun said excitedly, reveling in the joy of getting something for free, "Cultivating immortality, the kind where you can fly, and you don't even have to serve at a sect."
"Moo~~"
Black Bull was thrilled too, remembering the cultivators they had seen performing Sword Flight, traversing the heavens and earth with envy.
"The Qi Cultivation stage is divided into ten levels, with the tenth level reaching Foundation Establishment, breaking through the lifespan limit, living up to four hundred..."
Reading this, both Chen Xun and Black Bull smirked slyly at each other, sharing a moment of unspoken mischief.
But the technique only went up to Foundation Establishment; they were clueless about the realms beyond.
"Let's try it together, Bull, following its circulation path, feeling the spiritual energy of heaven and earth."
Chen Xun sat cross-legged and even taught Black Bull how to do the same, trembling with laughter, "All beings with a spirit root can sense the spiritual energy."
"Moo?"
"Don't worry, you definitely have one, you're a spirit beast."
"Moo~"
Black Bull grinned, reassured.
"Come on, spiritual energy of heaven and earth, heed my command, enter my body!"
"Moo moo moo moo!"
Man and bull followed the technique's circulation path, trying to capture the sensation of the spiritual energy. They sat with eyes slightly closed, calming their minds, and an hour passed just like that.
Two hours passed...
Three hours passed...
"Impossible, absolutely impossible!"
Chen Xun's eyes snapped open, looking at Black Bull, "A fake?"
"Moo~ Moo!" Black Bull hesitated, then nodded, seemingly feeling nothing.
"Damn it."
Chen Xun's face twisted in pain, hands propping against the ground, "To think that Old Sun's son was duped by a fake, it seems he realized something was wrong after trying to cultivate and left it behind."
"Moo moo!" Black Bull nodded, Chen Xun's reasoning made perfect sense, he was indeed clever.
"However."
Chen Xun's tone shifted, frowning slightly, "After trying to cultivate, there is indeed a strange feeling in my abdomen."
"Moo?"
"Maybe I've eaten too much demonic beast meat, I need to step out for a moment, to relieve myself."
Black Bull: "..."
After Chen Xun left, he found a secluded spot, dug a hole, and squatted down, his mind racing.
"Could it be my spirit root is too weak?"
Chen Xun grimaced, then relaxed his features, "Impossible, Black Bull is a spirit beast, could it be just as weak as me?"
At that thought, Chen Xun couldn't help but snicker to himself, his movements growing more vigorous until his expression suddenly changed, looking down at his feet, "Ouch, damn..."
Returning to the cave, Chen Xun said, "Bull, there's another possibility, maybe our spirit roots are just too weak."
Black Bull didn't respond but kept sniffing around, noticing a foul smell on Chen Xun.
"Bull?" Chen Xun frowned, what did that mean?
Black Bull's nose was almost at Chen Xun's feet.
"With the strength to uproot mountains and the spirit to cover the world!"
"Moo!!~~~"
Black Bull was abruptly hoisted up by Chen Xun, who angrily said, "Bull, I'm talking to you."
"Moo moo~"
Black Bull settled down, leaning against the earthen wall, keeping its distance from Chen Xun, with a hint of mockery in its bovine eyes.@@novelbin@@
"Let's persist in cultivating for an hour each day, and if it's useless, then so be it."
"Moo."
Black Bull nodded, shifting its position as Chen Xun approached, but Chen Xun wouldn't let it be, leaving Black Bull on the verge of tears.
They ended up sleeping huddled together for the night, and by the next day, the calls of birds had already entered the cave, along with a ray of sunlight.
"Let's go, Bull, time to gather herbs."
Chen Xun slowly opened his eyes, stretching lazily, "And then apply some medicine on your head."
"Moo~" Black Bull also woke up, its head still aching a bit.
...
As time flew by, they had already spent three years in the Cloud Mountains, and no longer encountered any dangers like demonic beasts emerging from the mountains.
However, they did come across countless skeletons of locals. Sometimes, with nothing else to do, Chen Xun and Black Bull returned to their old ways.
The mournful sound of the suona and the ringing of bells echoed through the mountain forest, guiding souls back to their resting place.
Chen Xun was now dressed in wild beast skins, carrying a bamboo basket on his back, wielding a Mountain-axing axe, with a couple more strapped to his waist, and his face marked with several stripes, a bow and arrows on his back, the very image of a wild man.
Black Bull's horns had finally regrown this year, and it too was draped in beast skins, with bold stripes painted on its bovine head, almost unrecognizable as a Black Bull.
A wild boar frantically fled, its eyes wide with terror, remembering how just a few days ago, its father was split open by a wild man and its mother was rammed to death by a wild bull.
"Grunt, snort."
The wild boar suddenly stopped, trembling and squealing, as it looked ahead and behind, facing the very wild man and wild bull.
"Heh heh." Chen Xun grinned with a bloodthirsty smile, blocking its path.
"Moo moo." Black Bull sealed off its escape route.
"Little pig, become a part of our bodies, we'll grow stronger together, heh, heh, heh."
Chen Xun's twisted smile emerged as he suddenly appeared above the boar's head, while Black Bull charged in perfect sync.
"Snort~~!!"
A flash of blood, and the wild boar fell lifelessly, its entire family neatly dealt with by Chen Xun and Black Bull.
"Let's go, Bull."
"Moo."
Chen Xun hoisted the boar's carcass, while Black Bull buried the blood in a hole, heading back to their cave.
"Bull, who would have thought that the manual was real."
Chen Xun devoured the wild boar meat, his mouth greasy, "My hearing has improved, cultivating immortality really is different from us mortals."
"Moo moo moo."
Black Bull nodded vigorously, soup splashing around, and in the quiet of the night, it could see things clearer than before.
This feeling was entirely different from what the longevity points brought; those seemed to strengthen the body, while cultivating immortality was an elevation of the senses, an advancement of life itself.
"But our progress has stalled again."
Chen Xun shook his head slightly, disbelievingly adding longevity points to his speed, reaching 21, and not sparing Black Bull either.
But like their strength, they hit a barrier, unable to further enhance their physical capabilities, which was utterly baffling.
"Moo moo?"
Black Bull was equally puzzled, wondering if they were destined to only have longevity in the mortal realm, considering no locals could match them in a fight.
"Shall we try using magical power next year?"
Chen Xun said uncertainly, equating it with mana, but they lacked skills...
"Moo! Moo~" Black Bull shook its head, nudging Chen Xun.
"World Soul?"
"Moo!"
Black Bull nodded frantically, suggesting they try that instead; magical power was too mysterious, and its Black Bull Charge was already formidable.
"Alright, we'll do it your way."
Chen Xun smiled, his greasy hand patting Black Bull, who remained blissfully unaware.
What do you think?
