Chapter 17 – The secret to longevity is never to meddle in other people's business
The next day, Chen Xun bid farewell to Ning Si with clasped hands; they were heading back to the blacksmith's shop, their true home in Panning City.
Several days later, Chen Xun cracked a smile as he pushed open the door, only to be greeted by a cloud of dust that nearly choked him.
He gazed at the empty spot and whispered, "Old Sun, we're back."
"Moo moo~" Black Bull also let out a couple of calls.
"Bull, get to work, clean this place up."
"Moo!"
Man and bull got busy, cleaning every corner until the blacksmith's shop was spick-and-span, looking brand new.
Passersby were shocked to see the doors of the shop open, and one called out, "Is that you, Brother Chen Xun? It's me, Aunt Li."
"Aunt Li, yes, it's me."
A loud shout came from the shop, delighting Aunt Li, who quickly scurried around, telling all the locals that Brother Chen Xun had returned.
After more than a decade, Chen Xun had come back. He was a master blacksmith; the tools he made were so durable that many locals were still using them without any issues.
Neighbors flocked to the shop, some familiar faces and some strangers, all of them complaining about the other blacksmith shops nearby, their high prices, and how they needed him instead.
"Eh, Brother Chen Xun, you haven't changed a bit, in fact, you look even younger."
Aunt Li sized Chen Xun up and down, clicking her tongue in amazement. She had aged so much more since they last met.
"Heh, I went to apprentice with a doctor and learned the art of health preservation," Chen Xun explained, looking at Aunt Li. "The most important thing is to keep an optimistic mindset, that's the secret to staying young."
"Really, Brother Chen Xun?"
"Of course, just sneak under your old man's blanket and you'll know."
"Ha ha ha…"
Laughter erupted from the crowd as Aunt Li's face turned red with embarrassment. She spat out, "You're so improper," before hurrying away.
"Alright, everyone come back tomorrow, I need to prepare."
"Sure, Brother Chen Xun, wish you great success on your opening."
"Definitely, we'll be there to support you."
...
The locals were incredibly enthusiastic, and Chen Xun responded with clasped hands and a smile, his mindset completely different from before.
Hearing of Chen Xun's return, the owners of the other blacksmith shops on the street cursed loudly, "Damn it, lower the prices, lower them now!"
However, Chen Xun's blacksmith shop only opened for half a day and then stopped taking orders; he was too busy. As long as he could maintain his livelihood, that was enough.
They were now in the backyard, tinkering with medicinal herbs. The World Soul could increase the age of herbs even after they were removed from the soil, truly miraculous.
"Bull, I've realized a fundamental problem," Chen Xun said seriously, having pondered this issue for a long time.
"Moo?" Black Bull looked puzzled.
"Don't you feel like we've hit a bottleneck at the second level of Qi cultivation? Absorbing the spiritual energy of heaven and earth just doesn't seem to cut it; it takes time to grind through."
"Moo."
"Do you feel that as long as we have enough time, we can keep strengthening our cultivation? That we can always grind it out?"
"Moo."@@novelbin@@
"Heh, Bull, you're so naïve," Chen Xun chuckled softly. "This spiritual root is a matter of talent. You might grind through the Qi cultivation phase, but Foundation Establishment is a different story."
"Moo?"
"Without external aids, that is, opportunities, we might get stuck at a certain realm for life, unable to break through. That's talent for you, not something you can grind out with time."
"Moo? Moo!"
Black Bull cried out in alarm, the more it thought about it, the more it made sense.
Chen Xun thought of the world-changing figures from his past life. Some things just can't be caught up with time; ordinary people, no matter how long they live, can only gain knowledge and experience.
But they may never reach the heights of those geniuses. That's talent, and it's also a harsh reality.
Unfortunately, Chen Xun and Black Bull were just such ordinary beings with long lives. They exchanged a deep look and suddenly embraced each other.
Behind their heartfelt embrace, both corners of their mouths carried a sly grin: "So you're a noob too."
"But we need to be careful. Look at us, we did nothing in the mountains and still offended people."
Chen Xun spoke seriously, the matter was full of doubts, "If something's not right, don't be curious. Just stay out of it like we are now."
"Moo moo!"
Black Bull looked at Chen Xun with admiration. When they were still in the village, the villagers asked Old Man Li for his secret to longevity, and he said he never meddled in others' affairs.
It didn't understand at the time, but now, having experienced it firsthand, Black Bull was excited; it was all about experience.
"Following you, Brother Xun, everything's gonna be clear and sorted out, right?"
"Moo!"
Black Bull was utterly convinced; Chen Xun was indeed a genius.
"Same old saying, even if there's a ten-thousand-year-old spiritual herb in the Cloud Mountains, we won't go for it. Don't risk our lives for opportunities; just keep a steady mindset."
"Moo moo~~" Black Bull nuzzled Chen Xun.
Chen Xun smiled slightly and patted its head, "We have the World Soul, we'll just slowly improve our strength. We don't need to seek revenge on anyone, let's not spoil our happy days."
Black Bull nodded vigorously; it indeed felt a bit restless after practicing the Qi Cultivation Manual.
"Bull, don't get it twisted. Even if you reach the highest realm of cultivating immortality, become immortal, and can destroy heaven and earth with a single thought, you still have to live your life."
Chen Xun had noticed Black Bull's restlessness, "The journey we experience is what's most important, not some damn realm. If we're unlucky and kick the bucket, so what? Who's afraid?"
"Moo moo moo moo!!"
Black Bull nodded like a pecking chicken, it had an epiphany.
"Who knows, maybe some powerful being will take a dislike to us and wipe us out with a wave of their hand. If we die together, maybe we can still be together in the next life."
Chen Xun spoke carelessly, that was his attitude; if he died, so be it, his immortality was gotten for free anyway.
Black Bull, as if struck by a revelation, hurried over to Chen Xun, thinking that a powerful being might appear at any moment, and it had to die alongside Chen Xun.
"Ha ha ha…" Chen Xun laughed heartily, pushing Black Bull away, but it kept squeezing back in.
...
Half a year later, a thunderous boom from the Cloud Mountains shattered the tranquility of Panning City. Countless cultivators stood in the sky, visible even from the city, looking like UFOs.
"Holy crap, Bull, come out and see the flying people."

Chen Xun shouted excitedly, grabbing a handful of sunflower seeds and a stool to sit outside.
"Moo moo!" Black Bull hopped out, munching on seeds, its bovine eyes gazing into the distant sky, indeed impressive.
Shadows filled the streets as neighbors came out to watch the immortals, some even kneeling on the ground, praying for blessings.
Chen Xun and Black Bull, with their superior vision, watched intently.
"Bull, what do you think, are they fighting?"
Chen Xun sat on his stool, leisurely cracking seeds, "Why are they all standing together? Aren't they going to form some sort of formation?"
"Moo?" Black Bull was also confused, continuing to eat seeds on the ground.
In the sky, a rainbow light flashed, followed by intense explosions that terrified the locals, who prostrated themselves, muttering something under their breath.
"Amazing, that's got to be at least Foundation Establishment level."
Chen Xun marveled, the seeds tasting better and better, "Bull, when we can fly, will we be 'soaring to the skies'?"
"Moo moo!" Black Bull was furious, now understanding the meaning of the phrase; Chen Xun was teasing it.
It immediately snatched Chen Xun's seeds, but Chen Xun quickly pried open its mouth and took them back.
The battle in the distant sky suddenly intensified, with various spells and rainbow lights flashing, and even cultivators falling from the sky, utterly thrilling.
Chen Xun and Black Bull couldn't help but applaud; this was much more entertaining than any performance.
"My goodness, they're like human-shaped weapons."
Chen Xun's mouth hung open in awe, "No matter how skilled a mortal is in martial arts, when that spell comes at you like a laser, who can withstand it?"
"Moo!" Black Bull also opened its mouth wide in agreement, utterly outrageous.
The locals all looked on with reverence; this was the power of immortals, a pinnacle beyond the reach of mortals.
The battle of the immortals was swift; as various escape lights appeared in the sky, the fight that lasted half a day gradually dissipated.
"Is it over already? I wasn't done watching, sigh."
"Moo~~"
Chen Xun and Black Bull were left wanting more; they could have watched for a month, far more exciting than any TV drama.
"Bull, back to work."
"Moo!"
Life goes on, and the magical duel had nothing to do with them. Still, Chen Xun couldn't help but fantasize about entering the world of immortals someday, where watching others duel would be quite enjoyable.
What do you think?
