The Bigshot's Superstar Wife

Chapter 195 195: Arrive

The road to the research facility was treacherous, littered with the remains of battle, twisted metal, burned-out vehicles, and the corpses of both humans and monstrous creatures.

Athena and Xavier led their group through the ruins, each step cautious, each breath measured.

The air was thick with decay, a suffocating scent of death that clung to their skin and clothes.

The facility loomed ahead, a colossal structure of steel and reinforced concrete, its once-pristine walls now cracked and stained with dark streaks of dried blood.

The gates were bent inward, as if something massive had forced its way through. Silence stretched over the area, eerie and unnatural, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

Athena signaled the group to halt. "We need to check the perimeter first. There could still be threats inside."

Xavier nodded, already pulling out a small scanning device from his belt.

He activated it, and the screen flickered with static before displaying faint movement signatures within the facility. "There's something in there," he confirmed. "But it's not human."

Athena's grip tightened around her sword. They had expected as much, but confirmation only made the mission more daunting.

She motioned for the team to split into groups. Two soldiers moved toward the left flank, another pair to the right, while Athena and Xavier took the main entrance.

As soon as they stepped inside, the scent of chemicals and rot hit them. Broken glass crunched beneath their boots, and flickering overhead lights cast eerie shadows on the walls.

Blood was smeared across the floor, and remnants of research documents were scattered, some stained with darkened handprints.

Xavier knelt down, picking up a shattered vial. The label was faded, but the words "Bio-Weapon Development" were still visible.

He exhaled sharply. "Looks like they were working on something big before they got overrun."

Athena's eyes swept across the room. There were metal doors leading deeper into the facility, some dented outward as if something had tried to break free.

"We clear every room," she instructed. "If there's anything alive in here, we take it down before it gets the jump on us."

The first few hallways were eerily empty, save for the occasional body slumped against the wall, their faces frozen in silent screams.

Then, as they approached what seemed to be the central laboratory, a low, guttural growl echoed from the darkness.

Athena barely had time to react before something lunged from the shadows.

She sidestepped, her sword flashing through the air as she cleaved the creature's arm off in a single motion. It shrieked, black blood spraying across the floor.

Xavier fired his weapon, three precise shots to the head, and the thing collapsed in a twitching heap.

But it wasn't alone. More emerged from the side corridors, twisted, grotesque mutations of what had once been human researchers.

Their skin was stretched and discolored, bones protruding unnaturally beneath their flesh.

Their eyes glowed faintly, an unnatural bioluminescence hinting at the experiments that had gone horribly wrong.

Some had extra limbs, grotesquely grafted onto their torsos, while others moved with an insect-like precision that sent shivers down Athena's spine.

The team sprang into action. Gunfire roared through the halls, bullets tearing into the abominations, but some barely flinched.

Athena moved like a shadow, her blade cutting through flesh and bone, her every strike precise and lethal.

The creatures shrieked, some collapsing instantly while others continued forward, seemingly unfazed.

Xavier ducked beneath a clawed arm, driving his blade into the creature's throat before spinning and unloading a shot into another's skull.

"We need to keep moving," he called out. "They're going to keep coming."

Athena nodded, slicing through another foe before motioning for the group to push forward.

They needed to reach the control center, to access whatever research had been left behind and, hopefully, find a way to turn the tide of this battle.

The deeper they went, the worse the damage became. The walls were splattered with dried viscera, computer terminals smashed beyond recognition.

It was clear that whatever had happened here had been a massacre. When they finally reached the control room, the doors were barely hanging on their hinges.

Athena kicked them open, gun raised, but the room was empty of enemies. Instead, rows of monitors flickered with static, and a single terminal in the center of the room still displayed data.

Xavier moved toward it immediately, fingers flying over the keyboard as he attempted to access the files. Athena stood guard, eyes scanning every shadow for movement.

"This data is still intact," Xavier muttered. "Looks like they were researching the alien mutations. Some of these things… they aren't just from Earth."

Athena frowned. "Meaning?"

Xavier turned the screen toward her. "Meaning some of these monsters were sent here deliberately."

A chill ran down her spine. She had suspected as much, but seeing the confirmation on the screen made it real in a way she wasn't prepared for.

The invasion wasn't accidental. Someone, or something, had planned this. Her grip on her sword tightened. "Then we're dealing with more than just a mindless outbreak."

Xavier nodded grimly. "We need to get this data back to the base. If there's any chance of fighting back, it starts with understanding what we're up against."

Athena took one last glance at the blood-streaked monitors before turning back toward the exit. The facility had given them answers, but it had also raised more questions.

And deep in the pit of her stomach, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were already running out of time.

As Athena and Xavier prepared to leave, a faint humming noise echoed from the depths of the facility.

Athena froze, her instincts flaring. Something was still active. She turned back to the monitors, where a single line of text blinked ominously: "Initiating Protocol Z-13."

Xavier cursed under his breath. "We need to move. Now."

The walls trembled, and distant metallic clicks reverberated through the corridors. Athena didn't hesitate.

She grabbed the data drive and sprinted toward the exit with Xavier close behind. Whatever was waking up inside the facility, they couldn't afford to be here when it emerged.
