Chapter 15
The boardroom fell silent, the name Azure Foundation hanging heavily in the air like an ominous storm cloud. The directors exchanged uneasy glances, and even Song Yazhi, the Iron Lady herself, momentarily paused, her sharp eyes narrowing as she processed the information.
“Yes, Director Song,” the vice president continued, his voice tinged with unease. “The Azure Foundation is one of the most mysterious and powerful financial entities in the world. They control trillions of dollars in assets across various industries. If they’re targeting Gezhi Group, it’s not something we can take lightly.”
Song Yazhi leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking under the weight of her presence. The faintest frown creased her forehead, but her expression remained unreadable, like a chess master contemplating her next move. “The Azure Foundation,” she murmured again, her voice calm yet laced with intrigue. “Tell me everything we know about them.”
The vice president shuffled through his notes, his demeanor tense. “The Azure Foundation operates globally, with significant investments in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. They are known for their aggressive acquisition strategies and their ability to completely reshape industries. However, their true leadership remains shrouded in mystery. The only name that occasionally surfaces is… ‘Mr. Qin.'”
At the mention of the name, Song Yazhi’s fingers paused mid-tap against the table. Her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly masked her surprise with a neutral expression.
“Mr. Qin?” she repeated, her tone measured. “And who is this ‘Mr. Qin’? What do we know about him?”
The vice president shook his head, looking somewhat embarrassed. “Very little, Director Song. He’s rumored to be the mastermind behind the foundation, but no one has ever seen him or knows anything concrete about his identity. Even his nationality is uncertain. All we know is that his decisions shape the direction of this financial behemoth.”
Song Yazhi sat in silence, her mind racing. She had spent decades navigating the turbulent waters of the business world, facing down rivals and weathering storms. Yet the Azure Foundation was a different kind of beast, one that thrived in shadows and moved with devastating precision.
She turned to the room, her gaze sweeping over the gathered directors like a queen addressing her court. “If the Azure Foundation truly has its sights set on Gezhi Group, then we must be prepared. Begin an internal review immediately. I want a detailed analysis of our financial vulnerabilities and any unusual market activity in the past six months. Double-check all major shareholders. If anyone has been approached to sell their shares, I need to know about it yesterday.”
Her voice was commanding, and the directors nodded in unison, their earlier dissent evaporating in the face of her steely resolve.
“Director Song,” one of the senior executives ventured cautiously, “do you think we should seek external support? Perhaps align with another financial institution to counter their influence?”
Song Yazhi gave a faint smile, one that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Let’s not panic. For now, we’ll rely on ourselves. The Azure Foundation may be formidable, but Gezhi is no fragile flower. We’ve weathered worse storms than this.”
The room buzzed with quiet murmurs of agreement. Yet, beneath the surface, unease lingered like the faint rumble of distant thunder.
Just as the meeting was about to move on, Song Yazhi’s phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at the screen, and her eyes softened as she saw the name: Xiao Yuan.
“Excuse me,” she said, picking up the call with a smile. “Xiao Yuan, how are you?”
“Mom,” Qin Yuan’s voice came through, light and relaxed. “I just wanted to check in. How’s your day going?”
Song Yazhi’s expression warmed, her earlier tension melting away. “Busy, but nothing I can’t handle. And you? Everything going well at work?”
Qin Yuan chuckled softly. “Work’s fine, but I heard some interesting news about the Azure Foundation. They seem to have taken an interest in Gezhi Group.”
Song Yazhi’s eyes narrowed slightly, her instincts flaring. “You’ve heard about them?”
“Let’s just say I know a thing or two,” Qin Yuan replied cryptically. “Don’t worry, Mom. If they make a move, I’ll handle it.”
There was something in his tone—calm, confident, and unshakable—that made Song Yazhi pause. For a moment, it felt as though the son she had only recently reunited with was speaking not as a child but as an equal, perhaps even someone more experienced in this game than she realized.
“Xiao Yuan,” she said slowly, “the Azure Foundation is no ordinary entity. They’re dangerous.”
“Mom,” Qin Yuan said gently, “you raised me to be strong, didn’t you? Trust me. I won’t let anyone harm our family or the company.”
The words hung in the air, and for the first time, Song Yazhi felt a glimmer of something she hadn’t expected: reassurance.
“Very well,” she said finally, her voice soft but firm. “I’ll trust you. But if you need anything, promise me you’ll let me know.”
“Of course, Mom,” Qin Yuan replied, his voice warm. “You’ll be the first to know.”
As the call ended, Song Yazhi set down her phone and looked out the window of the high-rise conference room. The sprawling city below seemed both familiar and foreign, its glittering skyline a testament to the empire she had built.
But now, a new force had entered her world—a son whose abilities and connections she was only beginning to glimpse. And somewhere, behind the veils of secrecy, the Azure Foundation loomed, its enigmatic “Mr. Qin” preparing to make his next move.
Unbeknownst to her, the battle for Gezhi’s future was no longer hers to fight alone.
What do you think?
