"Come on, Amagi! Be more serious! If the old man is watching you slacking off like this, I will not be responsible for whatever you will suffer next, okay?!" Matsukita High's captain, Takeuchi Gondo scolded his kouhai who started to get lazy in the middle of the game.
"Eh?! Why would you want to rat me out like that, Senpai?!" Amagi, the team's setter, cried indignantly. "You know that I am not suitable for this kind of game! I hate being sweaty, you know?!"
Gondo just rolled his eyes in exasperation, not taking Amagi's outrageous words seriously. He knew Amagi and the rest of the team would never be afraid of something so trivial as being sweaty or not, but the big revelation in the school that the most beautiful girl in Amagi's generation didn't like the sporty boy who was always sweaty really hit some of his kouhai hard. Not that they had a chance in the first place, of course. Gondo saw from the first hand the beautiful girl himself, and he would slap anyone on his team who thought they had a shot with her straight on their face. The girl was on a different level, and while dreaming was okay, he would never allow his precious kouhai to drown in madness.
"Well, if you don't like being sweaty, I can ask Honda-sensei to put you on the bench, you know? I am sure he will be happy to hear that. So happy that he will prepare a special training menu just for you, Amagi." Gondo smirked slyly when he saw Amagi's face pale gradually as if the blood drained from his face.
"No, Senpai! No need to do that! Don't worry, I will run more!"
Gondo just sighed when he saw Amagi run away from him in fear. While he admitted that Amagi was a talented player, the setter was too playful and sometimes forgot when to be serious. This made him, the captain who was about to retire, worry if the team would be okay or not when he left it.
'Meh, that would be Honda-sensei's problem.'
As for Amagi himself, while he was still running around the court playfully, he put his focus back on the game immediately. Of course, he was also joking with his words before. There was no way he would be high over the heels for someone he didn't even know anything about. He just said it to send a jab at his friends who thought too much about the girl they had never talked to even for once, and by how embarrassed his friends were, he knew the jab was delivered perfectly.
'Good. At least they are back to the reality now.' He smirked, satisfied. Then, his attention turned back to the Hibiya High's players who were still standing tall even when the score was far from their favor. 'Damn, to drag us down to this point, they are good. Unfortunately, their effort is futile.'
What Amagi meant by futile was of course Hibiya High's lack of ability to score against them. No matter how hard they tried to keep the ball flying if they couldn't knock down the ball to score for their team, it would only annoy Matsukita, yet nothing much would change. It was just a pity that their opponent didn't have a heavy hitter to rely on in this kind of situation.
'Oh, well… Maybe, I need to get more serious.'
In the next few minutes, while Hibiya High still showed praise-worthy resilience and didn't let Matsukita players score easily, Matsukita's offense suddenly ran smoother than before. The wave of attack kept coming from every direction, not even letting them take a rest for a second. This time, Matsukita really showed why they deserved the title as the second-best team in the country.
"AMAGI! Give it to me!"
"Got it, Takagi-senpai! Don't fail me, okay?!"
BAM!
"Oh, shit! Again?! Give it to me again, Amagi!"
"Oh, hell no! You fail once, you wait for your turn later!"
Thud!
"Hell, yeah!"
"How the hell…" One of Hibiya's players panted, hands on the knee. "Do they keep this intensity without sweating for even a second…." His statement got the nods of agreement from his teammates.
Even though they all knew they were outclassed by Matsukita High by miles, Hibiya High was always proud of their resilience, fighting a boring and exhausting game for hours. They didn't expect that a team like Matsukita who always had a fast-paced game could match their intensity and not be bothered by the stamina consumption in this game at all.
Well, that was the consequence of their baseless assumption. They just thought that since not a single team could handle Matsukita's attack, the second-best team in the country would be taken aback if someone managed to do that which would give them an opening to strike back. That was a decent strategy and would probably work in any top-seeded team, but not for Konan High and Matsukita High. There was a reason why those two were on another level, after all.@@novelbin@@
After a while, the rest of the game finally started to go in the direction everyone had already predicted since the beginning. All the Matsukita players started finding their best form once again, and even though Hibiya High tried their best, they still couldn't hold a candle to the opponent they currently faced.
In the end, Matsukita finally won the game, and although Hibiya High managed to drag it until almost one hour and a half, the final score spoke for itself. Matsukita won 25 – 6 and 25 – 8, showing that while Hibiya could prolong the game as much as they wanted, they couldn't prevent the death that had been waiting for them.
As all the Tsunemori players watched those from Matsukita celebrating their win on the screen, an awkward silence befell as no one knew what to speak. In the end, though, it was Riku who finally broke the silence there. "What a game, huh?"
Even though he didn't receive any verbal answer, the blonde boy knew that everyone was still too shocked after what they had just watched. They knew Matsukita High was good. Hell, they even tasted Matsukita's power firsthand before the Inter-high. However, that was before all the senior members' fiasco and their massive improvement during the summer.
After all of the blood and sweat they poured in the last few months, they thought they were finally good enough to walk alongside the two giants. Unfortunately, the game between Matsukita and Hibiya was an eye-opener for them.
If Matsukita could easily beat Hibiya who had a similar style as them easily, what chance did they have when the game between Matsukita and Tsunemori finally came?
What do you think?
