Myaro Gudanvier was looking at the ship in the port of the royal capital Sibyaku. The mark of the Hou Company was largely inscribed on the sail. However, the ones currently operating that ship were not its original owners. The people who appeared from the docked ship were of a different race from the ship’s owners.

A man who had accumulated fat finished crossing the gangplank and stepped onto the land of Sibyaku. Myaro Gudanvier was watching it with the feeling of having encountered a historical rare event.

That man’s name was Gertrude Evans. In the investigation report, his name had been seen many times. From the Albio Republic, a report analyzing him in detail had also been delivered. Age was thirty-one. However, he seemed to be in very bad condition. When he was about to kneel after crossing the gangplank, he was promptly supported by a well-equipped Kuran soldier. And then, as he tottered across the pier, as if clinging to the reliable, unshaking land, he sat down on a nearby wooden crate of cargo.

He was hanging his head. If one were to bring him medicine for seasickness, he seemed like he would drink it without hesitation, even if it were deadly poison. In reality, if that freedom had been given, Myaro would have done so. Or perhaps more directly, she might have used the Queen’s Sword to eliminate him. However, that could not be done. Next to him was Liao Rube, and Myaro had not been brought along in a free-standing position. From Liao, advice had been sought.

To begin with, speaking in terms of advice, Myaro had been strongly opposed to the very act of inviting the Kuran, specifically the forces of the Papal Territory, into Sibyaku. However, Liao forcibly carried it out. The allied army of the enemy side, including the Papal Territory, had not been able to deal the expected damage to the army led by Yuri. In other words, Yuri had returned while preserving military strength. Or rather, riding the momentum of returning by ship, he had firmly struck Liao on the nose. He had taken Suomi.

Liao, respecting the position of Jano Ek, who had been a key player in the success of the rebellion, had given Suomi’s administrative rights to him, but that was a poor move. Suomi and the upstream heavy industry region were the core parts of the Hou Company. Since the Hou Company was an existence that supported Yuri’s strength, once taken, it must not be returned to Yuri’s hands.

If anything, even if the Rube Household’s main territory had to be stripped bare, Suomi’s defense should have been strengthened. Liao, seemingly valuing his homeland, had allocated troops for its defense, but to Yuri, the Rube Household’s main territory was not of such great value. Even if occupied, soldiers could not be replenished, nor could weapons be produced. Furthermore, to suppress the strong hostility of the residents, troops would need to be allocated to suppress uprisings. Occupying such a place would be nothing but a burden. However, the area around Suomi was, to Yuri, like a well-fitted tool. Once retrieved, it could be used from the next day. Liao had carelessly handed over the region that Yuri desired so much.

Perhaps he had thought that it was not so weak as to be torn apart like paper in an amphibious operation, but in front of Yuri, it was a naive idea.

“That man, what do you think?” (Liao)

“He is terribly seasick. He must be feeling quite unwell.” (Myaro)

According to the plan, they were supposed to move to a place where the guest could be entertained and have a meeting, but with that condition, it seemed unlikely. It would be better to guide him to an inn.

“That’s not it. How do you see him?” (Liao)

“He appears natural. I do not feel at all an attitude of trying to hide weakness from inferior races.” (Myaro)

At this level, it would not even be advice. Or perhaps, should she tell some clumsy lie to disturb Liao’s thoughts? She was reluctant. Surely, Liao had at least the ability to see through that.

There was also various other information that could be obtained just by glancing at him. First, he was clearly not trained. His combat ability was likely inferior even to some street brawlers. For those who rose through the ranks relying on intelligence and strategy, traps that induce carelessness or provocations often did not work.

And also, he was not the type to directly command soldiers as a non-commissioned officer. That appearance and overly frank attitude were qualities that would be looked down upon by the general soldiers. Rather, he gave the impression of someone who suddenly found himself in a position to command those who command soldiers. Those impressions matched the information in the report.

Well, she won’t tell Liao though.

“Guide them to the inn.” (Liao)

Liao gave an order to a nearby subordinate.

“I will return to the royal castle.” (Liao)

“I see. Then, I will take my leave.” (Myaro)

As Liao started walking, Myaro casually changed direction and headed toward the crowd.

“Hey.” (Liao)

Before even three steps, Myaro’s arm was grabbed by Liao.

“I don’t want to tie your arm with a rope. Understand?” (Liao)

Liao had a serious expression.

“…It was a joke, a joke.” (Myaro)

If it had been overlooked, the truth was, Myaro would have run away just like that. But if it had been serious, she would have fled by running. However, that would give the impression of a full-fledged escape, not something that could be excused as a joke. If that happened, Liao would not be able to protect her. In reality, Myaro should have been executed or, at the very least, locked up in a cell. She was walking on thin ice, and if she made even the slightest mistake, the ice would crack. She was aware of that.

“Come.” (Liao)

Liao pulled Myaro’s arm and led her toward the carriage.

“Is this how you usually treat women?” (Myaro)

Grabbing someone’s arm and dragging them along is hardly a gentlemanly manner. When escorting, it is normal for the woman to link arms and walk. Not that she would do that.

“Come one, come all, chase none away, that was my principle. You’re the first to break that principle.” (Liao)

“…Hmm, is that so?” (Myaro)

Being told such things by a man, honestly, did not feel bad.

Myaro did not understand the subtleties between men and women. Although Liao knew that Myaro was an enemy, he kept trying to keep her as close as possible. Even though he must have understood that there was no chance of receiving a useful response, he kept asking for opinions. Whether that was due to his peculiar fetishes or whether it was one of his strategies to flirt with women, Myaro, who had no experience, could not judge.

“Put this on.” (Liao)

The day after Gertrude Evans’ arrival, Liao visited Myaro’s office and placed a dress on the backrest of the sofa that a maid in the royal castle would wear.

What kind of taste is that?

“Do you have such a fetish? I knew that such men exist, but it’s surprisingly close to me. I’m a little taken aback.” (Myaro)

When Myaro said this, Liao made a displeased face.

“No. It’s because I’m going to attend the meeting with Gertrude Evans, and if they ask about your background, it would be troublesome to explain. If it’s a maid who serves, it wouldn’t be unnatural to attend the meeting in the room. I can also feign ignorance about your background.” (Liao)

Attending a meeting with Gertrude, huh.

“…Do you want me to serve tea?” (Myaro)

“If you seem about to make a mistake that could destroy the country, stop me. Even if you can’t cooperate with the Rube Household’s domination, you can oppose the country taking a hundred steps back. For example, you wouldn’t want the Kuran people to retake the vast territory from the peninsula to the east, including Shantinion. If they are scheming to do that, you should sense it and advise me. You could offer partial cooperation.” (Liao)

That might be true. However, there was something about the situation that felt like Liao was trying to establish the fact that he was pulling Myaro into his inner circle by treating her like a secretary, perhaps for some ulterior motive. But, leaving things alone and letting the country fall into chaos would certainly be problematic.

“Well, I don’t mind. If you say it that much, I’ll attend the meeting.” (Myaro)

“Here, please.” (Subordinate)

A maid in charge of serving, apparently dispatched from the Rube Household, handed over a tray with two teacups lined up. It was a shabby, plain tea set, with a somewhat shouka-style taste. The tray was also wooden. Probably, it was something used privately when the queen of the generation before the last was alive. Neither were things used for entertaining guests in the culture of the royal capital. Normally, tea sets used would be more flamboyantly colored ones, and trays would be made of silver. Probably, it was because she wanted to surround herself with people from her own household whom she could trust, that she brought them from her family home in the Rube territory.

Even for a shouka household, a maid working at the Sibyaku-assigned villa would not do such a thing.

Well, it didn’t matter.

“Thanks.” (Myaro)

She responded with a token reply and accepted the tray. Because she was made to wear thick-soled shoes with heels, which she usually did not wear, she felt uneasy about whether she could walk well. However, the slightly elevated familiar eye level was a fresh feeling.

She opened the door and entered inside. There, two men were sitting silently. Gertrude had not insisted on bringing in guards into the room, and came alone, it was said. Well, if there had been the intention to kill, perhaps the thought was that she would have already been killed at the point of coming to the royal capital with less than ten guards.

“Here you are.” (Myaro)

Myaro bent her knees and placed the teacups on the table. It was an unfamiliar action, but as the one to receive it, it was something done to her thousands, tens of thousands of times, so she thought she could somehow manage by imitation. She poured the tea from the teapot, quickly stood up, and as is, stood in the corner behind Liao with the tray held in front of her. The glasses she was wearing for disguise (according to Yuri, glasses without lenses are called “date-megane”) were a bother. She was not used to the frame entering her vision.

“That woman over there?” (Gertrude)

“She is my maid.” (Liao)

“What is her name?” (Gertrude)

“Who knows. I don’t remember the names of maids one by one.” (Liao)

Suddenly being asked her name was a surprise. Liao responded exactly as previously anticipated.

“Is it okay if she hears the conversation? If she’s loose-lipped, the talk here might leak outside.” (Gertrude)

It was fluent Shantongese. It hadn’t been in the report, but apparently she had learned the language on this side.

“Her mouth is tight. Don’t worry about that.” (Liao)

“You trust her that much and yet don’t remember her name?” (Gertrude)

Oof, it felt like that. It was certainly a bit strange. As expected, this man had an excellent ability to see through lies and deception.

“…Why do you want to know her name? Planning to abduct her on your way back and make her a slave or something?” (Liao)

“Of course not. I have no such intention.” (Gertrude)

“Then, don’t go around asking the names of women in this country. I won’t answer either. Women who are told their name without reason feel unpleasant.” (Liao)

No woman would feel good having her name known by a rapist. It was a good comeback. It felt a bit evasive, but it served as a reason for not telling the name.

“No, I just thought she might be the interpreter. My apologies, my apologies. I’ll have the tea.” (Gertrude)

Gertrude glanced over here, lightly nodded, then pinched the handle of the teacup and brought it to her mouth.

Not that I was the one who brewed the tea.

Myaro thought.

After taking a sip of tea, Gertrude furrowed his brows. Apparently, it didn’t suit his taste. From the moment it was poured, it had a somewhat unusual aroma, but as expected, it was a strongly flavored tea. People of the Rube Household were inconsiderate in such ways. In the royal castle, imported tea leaves were readily available. There was no need to serve such a strongly flavored local tea to a guest.

Not that it mattered, but being treated as if I was the one who brewed it is a bit unpleasant. I am not that coarse.

“…Well then, shall we get to the main topic. As for the conditions of our reinforcements—” (Gertrude)

“From the beginning, it seems the current situation has deviated quite a bit from the story initially brought up, though.” (Liao)

Liao interrupted.

“Wasn’t it said that the regular army led by Yuri was mostly depleted or detained on the continent side?” (Liao)

Liao spoke with displeasure.

Well, naturally, he would want to voice complaints.

Myaro thought.

The rebellion raised by Liao, if one considered from his standpoint, was not such a bad deal.

Liao does not know of the existence of the New Continent, so he does not think Yuri has a place to escape to. In that situation, Yuri is drawn deep into the continent, and there annihilated or receives great damage. Naturally, the Papal Territory army would pursue with full strength. There, the Rube Household army, having seized Karakumo as swiftly as possible, would intercept in a pincer attack formation.

The main force and various generals of the Hou Household army, of course, are mostly dispatched to the continent, and in such a state, occupying Hou Household territory is not such a difficult matter.

Because it would buy fierce resentment from the populace, the point that very large cost would be required for stable regime operation might be a bottleneck. However, if speaking of possibility, there is sufficient prospect of success.

And yet, the current situation is entirely different from that. The containment or annihilation on the continent ended in failure, and Yuri has landed while preserving her main force. As Liao says, it is entirely a different story from the prior arrangement.

“Yes, that is correct. Yuri Hou surely fell into the trap I put my heart and soul into creating. Until the leaflets you arranged to be scattered from the sky, he likely had not even realized the stratagem. But he, once deeply caught in the trap, escaped from it in a way that went far above my imagination.” (Gertrude)

Gertrude, as he spoke, seemed to be growing excited. Contrary to Myaro’s imagination, his tone held no color of resentment.

“Alone, he entered the camp of Princess Angelica, an enemy nation, and in the form of forming an alliance! Two countries that had been enemy nations until then, without any prior consultation, became allied nations in less than half an hour! That such a thing could happen, I could not even imagine.” (Gertrude)

From that excited tone, rather, a sense of awe toward Yuri could even be felt.

Myaro had not obtained that information, but apparently Yuri had directly entered the Angelica camp. What an outrageous thing to do. If she had been present there, she might have cried to stop him, or tried to go in his place. An act such as the commander-in-chief entering the enemy camp alone, from just the outline, feels like a suicidal act. However, in Yuri’s diplomatic view, it must have been an adventure with prospects of victory. Perhaps the kind of image she held toward Angelica prompted her to take such an action.

“That is your side’s fault. We bear no responsibility.” (Liao)

Liao said in a strong voice.

“That is absolutely right. If you ask for an apology, we will apologize as much as you like.” (Gertrude)

Gertrude, still seated on the sofa, deeply bowed his head. It was a cheap head, with the feel of saying he’d offer as many cost-free apologies in words as desired.

“But we have no responsibility to protect your new regime. There is no such clause in the secret agreement exchanged beforehand. If we are to cooperate with you, it cannot be a gratuitous service.” (Gertrude)

“What do you want? Money? Or slaves?” (Liao)

“No, we have no interest in such things.” (Gertrude)

Apparently, it was different. On the other side, the value of Shanti slaves, especially the market price of women, had surged. It had been thought such demands might come, but apparently not.

“What we want is a definite war result.” (Gertrude)

War result… huh.

“If Yuri attacks, you should just fight bravely at that time and gain it yourself.” (Liao)

“No, what I am saying is, we want you to guarantee us war results sufficient for us. If we are to move a large army, that is a line we cannot concede.” (Gertrude)

“I don’t follow. What are you saying?” (Liao)

“Please be at ease. For you, it is a very simple matter. It is by no means a loss, nor is it an action problematic as a king.” (Gertrude)

Liao seemed to be pondering the answer to that riddle-like proposition. Myaro already had an idea.

If she were in the opposite position, there was an answer of what she would do.

“The condition for us to dispatch troops and lend you power is only two things. One is, to hand over to us the one known by the name of ‘Disaster of Argument,’ Eisa Catholica Wichita. The other is, to execute the prime minister known by the name of ‘Witch’, Myaro Gudanvier.” (Gertrude)

Gertrude Evans curled up the corners of his mouth in a grin.

“It’s just to kill two women, who are in your hands but not allies. With no hardship, no damage, you can gain an army of ten thousand as allies. Such a trivial demand, don’t you think?” (Gertrude)
